Never got the fuss about ‘When Harry Met Sally’

Just reading a review of Meg Ryan’s new romcom which compares it to When Harry Met Sally as if the latter was some kind of holy grail of filmmaking. AIBU to remember it as a pretty white bread and basic film that has some decent performances and doesn’t actively insult your intelligence, but really isn’t anything special? The speech Billy Crystal gives her at the end about how he loves the little crease in her forehead, or whatever it is, I honestly find really cheesy and cringe. I don’t particularly think they have chemistry. I liked Meg Ryan better in ‘In the Cut’. I would think less of anyone who told me they loved WHMS.

AIBU?

I also wondered if “High Maintenance” was actually coined by WHMS?

Yes!

I love it but needed to watch it more than once to appreciate it

I think I got my first graduate job based on that expression. I had 3 days work experience and then an interview with the MD (small company). He asked me what I thought of my direct boss and I said she seemed 'high maintenance'. (I generally do struggle with saying the first thing that comes into my head!) Anyway, he clearly thought I had her sussed and didn't I mind my candidness because I got the job!

And were you right, was she high maintenance? Did you enjoy working for her?

Most definitely HM. I remember crying in the toilets a few times. But she didn't last that long and I did!

I agree, Billy Crystal was perfect for that role.

He was absolutely the best Oscar host too.

I think my favourite bit (apart from when Frank Sinatra starts singing at the end) is the disastrous double date and their eyes connect across the table.
