To ask if you have 4 British Grandparents?

In conversation with friends last night about the perks of still having an EU passport I discovered I was the only one with all 4 Grandparents being British.

DH also has 1 non British Grandparent and now when I really think about it so do a lot of my other friends. I would say the majority have an Irish Grandparent but also Spanish, Indian, Chinese, Polish, Maltese and Italian amongst my close friends.

I recall reading somewhere that 25% of British people could get an Irish passport so I guess I’m now wondering if having all 4 British Grandparents are not being entitled to any other nationality is actually quite uncommon?

They're dead but yes I did, I'm mid fifties though

Highlyflavouredgravy · 05/11/2023 10:13

Yep unfortunately. I would bloody love an Irish passport

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 05/11/2023 10:14

I have one British grandparent.

CasperGutman · 05/11/2023 10:14

Yes. In fact, everyone I can find in my family history going back at least four generations is determinedly British, to my rather illogical slight disappointment!

Bruisername · 05/11/2023 10:14

I have 2 non Brits and my kids have 3

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 05/11/2023 10:14

All 4 British and same with my husband. Properly British with a mix of English, Welsh and Scottish.

I suspect that is the case for the majority. Statistics are always skewed with a small sample size.

KookyAndSpooky · 05/11/2023 10:14

Yes, all my grandparents and great-grandparents are British. I don't think it's that rare.

ThornInMySide84 · 05/11/2023 10:14

@Highlyflavouredgravy me too 😭

Mine are all gone now but, yes, they were all British. I have to go back as far as my 2 x great grandparents to find any Irish ancestors.

Mummumgem · 05/11/2023 10:15

mine are all long gone, but yes all British through and through. My grandmother spent her childhood in Ireland, but was British.

Hesma · 05/11/2023 10:15

My dad is English and mum is Irish so I have two of each.

PlantDoctor · 05/11/2023 10:15

Yes, all 4. My grandmother had an Irish grandparent, and was interested in getting an Irish passport, but she voted leave so feels more than a little hypocritical!

mnahmnah · 05/11/2023 10:16

I had four British grandparents and all my great grandparents. As far as I know, so do all my friends. We’re early 40s.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/11/2023 10:16

Not me. 3 were British. Grandad was Luxembourg born and French/british/german.

museumum · 05/11/2023 10:16

Yes, all four British. Family goes back to Irish immigration to Scotland in 1800s but too long ago for passports.

Ponoka7 · 05/11/2023 10:17

One, but her background was Irish.

biscuitnut · 05/11/2023 10:17

I have an Irish and a welsh grandparent. Both born in respective countries . I consider myself British though and I am proud to be so.

x2boys · 05/11/2023 10:17

I had two Irish Grandparents and two British but from Irish Descent Grandparents.

AvengedQuince · 05/11/2023 10:17

One grandparent is technically Irish as born in England to Irish parents but not Irish enough for me to get a passport unless my parent had registered as Irish before I was born.

Busyhedgehog · 05/11/2023 10:17

Nope. None of my grandparents is British. DS has two British grandparents. He has dual nationality, too.

SockQueen · 05/11/2023 10:17

All mine are British, as are DH's. Would love to be able to have a EU one - my sister has a Harriet German one by residency, but no such options for me.

Grapefruitsquash · 05/11/2023 10:17

I had 4 British grandparents but it didn't stop someone telling me "go home to israel, no one wants you here" when I forgot to take off my Star of David necklace when I used the tube last week.

scrivette · 05/11/2023 10:18

Yes.... although two Grandparents were born in India during the time of British Rule so had British passports despite being Anglo Indian.

TheSilverThorn · 05/11/2023 10:18

2 Brits and 2 overseas commonwealth country for me. I know DH are all Brits back to an Irish great unsure how many times the great is Grandfather who left in not surprisingly 1846.

Firebird83 · 05/11/2023 10:19

Yes, but paternal gps are Northern Irish so I am entitled to an Irish passport.
