To ask if you have 4 British Grandparents?

In conversation with friends last night about the perks of still having an EU passport I discovered I was the only one with all 4 Grandparents being British.

DH also has 1 non British Grandparent and now when I really think about it so do a lot of my other friends. I would say the majority have an Irish Grandparent but also Spanish, Indian, Chinese, Polish, Maltese and Italian amongst my close friends.

I recall reading somewhere that 25% of British people could get an Irish passport so I guess I’m now wondering if having all 4 British Grandparents are not being entitled to any other nationality is actually quite uncommon?

Nope. All dead now unfortunately but I had an Indian, Irish and 2 South Africans.

PrtScn · 05/11/2023 10:41

Yes, as my maternal grandfather was Northern Irish. Other 3 grandparents all Welsh.

MurielThrockmorton · 05/11/2023 10:44

One Irish, got a passport

Scaraben · 05/11/2023 10:44

My grandparents were all British but 2 of them were dual nationals from birth. Sadly I'm not entitled to other citizenships through them though!

Beezknees · 05/11/2023 10:47

Yep, all British and all from the same area. My grandmother used to do family history and she traced back to the 1800s, we have all lived in the same city for generations.

Dorriethelittlewitch · 05/11/2023 10:47

I had 1 Irish grandparent and dh has an Irish mother. One of my great grandparents was a refugee from another country but even if I was entitled to a passport, it wouldn't do me much good.

I currently live in NE Scotland and I know a lot of people either born in Northern Ireland themselves or with a parent from either Ireland or Northern Ireland.

I have four British grandparents, but one was born in Northern Ireland so I could have an Irish passport.

How? As Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. It's not part of the Republic of Ireland.

AbbeyGailsParty · 05/11/2023 10:48

They’re all dead but two British parents, 4 British grandparents, really boring.

SugarLatte · 05/11/2023 10:49

On paper, yes all 4 grandparents are British, but my father found out not long before his father passed away that he wasn’t his actual father, my grandmother had had an affair and his actual father was from Oman. He never met him, his mum wouldn’t give any more details away but ancestry dna confirms it.

CatOnAMushroom · 05/11/2023 10:50

All British as far back as anyone can remember

Zimunya · 05/11/2023 10:50

Yup, British as far back as you can search in my family. I’ve also never had another passport other than British, but didn’t grow up in the UK.

WellDuh · 05/11/2023 10:51

I've traced my family back to early 1800's on my dads side, and mid 1700's on my mums. All British (English on my dads side, Welsh on my mums mothers side) right the way back!

Everley · 05/11/2023 10:51

Two of mine were British, two were/are not.

MinnieMountain · 05/11/2023 10:51

I had a Irish great-grandmother but she had her family in India.
The rest of my grandparents were British.

ElectiveAffinities · 05/11/2023 10:52

All four of my grandparents were British too. But one side of my father’s family originated in Ireland and I missed out on that desirable passport by one generation. A great-grandfather and great-grandmother were both Irish.

Merryhobnobs · 05/11/2023 10:52

Yes all of mine are, would be nice to have a bit of variety! My husband is Northern Irish though which means my children and him can get Irish passports.

StonwEd · 05/11/2023 10:53

All gps dead but 2 Irish, 2 northern Irish, Irish mum, northern Irish dad so obvs I have an Irish passport! I was born in England though, parents wanted a “better life” for us but I don’t really know much about what life was like for them in Ireland as they met in London in their early 20s and never looked back…

Passerillage · 05/11/2023 10:53

None. DH and I are both immigrants with EU passports and DH has another passport too, from the country of his birth.

DogInATent · 05/11/2023 10:53

4x UK GP unfortunately.

Fortunately my spouse is a dual UK/EU national so when we travel together I get the benefits of the blue passport lane and not being limited by the 90/180 rule (if I could ever take that much time off).

ginandtonicwithlimes · 05/11/2023 10:53

All four were/are English. Only have my granny still living.

MrsJellybee · 05/11/2023 10:53

Three British, one Indian (born in India with Anglo-Indian/ German Heritage)

Travelismything · 05/11/2023 10:54

I’m sorry @Grapefruitsquash , I hope you are ok

TakeMe2Insanity · 05/11/2023 10:54

Interesting from an immigration perspective. I have none. DH has all 4. DC has all 4.

CesareBorgia · 05/11/2023 10:54

All dead now and all British.

Maddy70 · 05/11/2023 10:54

Sadly all mine and my husband's are all British. No chance of an EU passport for me
