To ask if you have 4 British Grandparents?

In conversation with friends last night about the perks of still having an EU passport I discovered I was the only one with all 4 Grandparents being British.

DH also has 1 non British Grandparent and now when I really think about it so do a lot of my other friends. I would say the majority have an Irish Grandparent but also Spanish, Indian, Chinese, Polish, Maltese and Italian amongst my close friends.

I recall reading somewhere that 25% of British people could get an Irish passport so I guess I’m now wondering if having all 4 British Grandparents are not being entitled to any other nationality is actually quite uncommon?

I have a Czech grandmother (had... I miss her so much).

Two British grandparents, and my mum had a runaway father who we don't really know much about, I don't consider him a grandparent.

PerkingFaintly · 05/11/2023 10:20

Only 1 British grandparent here.

Dinglewoop · 05/11/2023 10:20

Mine were all British and so were all their traceable ancestors (my uncle did some family tree research). I have 3 cousins with American passports and 1 with an Irish passport now though.

VerrryNice · 05/11/2023 10:20

Three British, one European. Two Irish great-grandparents.

I had 4 British grandparents but it didn't stop someone telling me "go home to israel, no one wants you here" when I forgot to take off my Star of David necklace when I used the tube last week.

Awful, I am sorry this happened to you.

Sturnidae · 05/11/2023 10:20

Nope. Dad was an immigrant, not from a country I would benefit having a passport from though.

LegallyBrunette01 · 05/11/2023 10:21

Me all 4 British. DH 2 British and 2 Hungarian, currently looking at obtaining citzenship so DH and DCs can get dual nationality.

Caravaggiouch · 05/11/2023 10:21

They’re all dead but yes I did have. 1 Scottish, 2 Welsh, 1 English.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 05/11/2023 10:22

Yes sadly. DF, no longer alive, had an Irish GF but I believe that's too far back for us to get an Irish Passport..

Cheeesus · 05/11/2023 10:22

I have four British grandparents. I think most of my close friends do.
DH has a Dutch grandparent but that doesn’t mean he’s entitled to an EU passport.

TheOutlaws · 05/11/2023 10:23

No, I’m eligible for an Irish passport through my dad’s mum.

margotrose · 05/11/2023 10:23

No. None of mine are British and neither are my parents, though they are citizens now.

Papyrophile · 05/11/2023 10:23

All British grandparents, both DH and I. But we are 68, so fairly standard for most UK residents. I'd have to go back to the 17th century to find my French Huguenot ancestors!

RightOnTheEdge · 05/11/2023 10:23

Yes, all mine were British and I think Great Grandparents too.

Mumofteenandtween · 05/11/2023 10:24

I have 4 British grandparents but one was not born in the UK.

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/11/2023 10:24

All 4 were British. English actually. In fact both sides of the family are English as far back the 17th century (haven't done the family tree any further back) so there is zero chance of me getting another passport dammit. 😛

Speckledy · 05/11/2023 10:24

I had no British grandparents. My husband had four. Thinking about friends I see a lot of day to day, living in a village in Oxfordshire, probably more than half would have had all British grandparents, the rest have maybe one other European rationality though lots of their families spent time abroad. My oldest friends, from school 30+ years ago, are mostly the children of immigrants like me so none have the full set British.

Chickoletta · 05/11/2023 10:24

Yes. 4 Cornish grandparents!

SoSad44 · 05/11/2023 10:25

0 British grandparents, my DC have 2 British grandparents and are dual citizens (like me)

Dacadactyl · 05/11/2023 10:25

All my grandparents are dead now but I only had 2 English grandparents i.e born in England.

A third grandparent had foreign grandparents himself and would've been entitled to another nationality passport that way, altho he only ever held a British passport.

CurlewKate · 05/11/2023 10:25

I am British-but I had no British grandparents.

MooseBreath · 05/11/2023 10:26

None of mine are British (not a surprise as I'm an immigrant). All of DH's were British, and all of their grandparents were also British.

WeightoftheWorld · 05/11/2023 10:26

No but one of my parents was born overseas and came to this country as an adult.

Aaaaarrgghh · 05/11/2023 10:26

Both sets of my grandparents were Irish, both sets of my DCs Grandparents are English!

DelphiniumBlue · 05/11/2023 10:26

Yes, I have 4 British grandparents, although there were immigrants a generation or 2 before that.
DH has 4 British grandparents, as does SiL, but most of my friends have at least 1 GP from somewhere else.
