Haven't had a period since April. Prior to that I had about 2 years of irregular cycles (really long or stupidly short).
I have periods of terrible night sweats e.g. 2 weeks of bad sweats every night and then they'll settle.
The odd hot flush in the day but nothing I can't manage.
Disrupted sleep, but I've had that for years (straight from having young children to terrible divorce to where I am now).
My sporting performance has dropped (I run competitively) in ways that are new to me.
Mood wise, I honestly don't know. I have always been highly strung, emotional, with a hot temper and often low on resilience (the sport really helps with this; both the physical side and being with great friends).

How do you know you're in peri? Is it counted from when your periods start getting irregular?

I'm 41 and have a few things going on that doctors can't find a reason for, so I'm wondering if I'm in peri but still have very regular periods.

For me, along with the typical symptoms (night sweats, hot flushes) it's having things that I've never had before. I mentioned above that I've noticed a drop in my sporting performance. Obviously this varies all the time anyway, but I feel I used to be able to account for poor (or good!) performance e.g. being unwell the week before, lack of sleep when the children were young, lack of training.

Recently I just feel unaccountably tried and heavy legged and haven't had that sweet spot where you feel fabulous, and that last kick that seems to come from nowhere at the end of a race has eluded me.
I am hopeful that if I keep up with my running that I will feel more myself once I'm out the other side.

I've zero symptoms. I'm 48 and periods have tapered off. Have a light one once a year. I run, eat wholefood vegan, mostly, and have never taken hormonal stuff like the pill. This is the winner.

I'm sure you don't mean to sound so smug, but your reply has ironically given me peri annoyance Grin

belgiumchocolates · 04/11/2023 18:44

58 weight gain! I wish I had paid more attention and adjusted my diet at the time but it crept up suddenly and I was distracted by covid/lockdown . All the other things were minor, sleep issues, hot flushes.

I had blood test about 10 years ago which showed start peri.
I still have periods, either 2 week early or 2 week late, and beforehand i was always to the dot.
Constipation!!
Sweats, day and night and always the neck.
Body feels red hot (fibro though).
Painful joints body pains.
Irritability at minimal stuff.
Thinner hair.
Dry skin.
Weight gain!

Im not really grumpy, im quite happy go lucky but noticed im less accepting of others shit ..but thats a good thing most of time because i havent accepted being treated so badly anymore. So on a positive, peri has helped me take less shit from people who have taken advantage of me in the past. Can you just....?. No i cant lol

GuitarGeorgina · 04/11/2023 18:56

I’m in my 50s but had a very early menopause at 41 after having chemotherapy.

Horrendous migraines

Very erratic periods (big gaps between them after being regular as clockwork, and very heavy but short lived when they came)

didn’t have hot flushes

insomnia

All combination of the symptoms listed here.

AlltheFs · 04/11/2023 18:59

45, nearer 46.

Nothing much yet. Some brain fog I think and definitely weight gain around middle. Periods are still regular although cycle has shortened slightly. Occasional insomnia but it’s not terrible (but is new).

Definitely early days here.

Jigglypufff · 04/11/2023 19:03

37 😫 Vaginal dryness, itching, pain during sex, lighter irregular periods, mood swings, dizziness, tiredness, bladder issues, constipation.
They have started me on a pessary to treat the vaginal problems. It seems to be going okay. I’m having bloods to rule anything else out due to my age.

Loubelle70 · 04/11/2023 19:04

.....i forgot to add....
Brain fog and forgetfulness 🤣

Perihelion · 04/11/2023 19:04

52, not had a period for 11 months. When I was peri, I had migraines, sore boobs and erratic periods. Now I occasionally get a hot face and have put on a bit of weight. I don't drink coffee and only very occasionally drink alcohol. I do take supplements and eat a fuckton of sugar.
I'm way more relaxed and unflappable about life. I don't think female hormones agreed with me 😂.

Milliemoos5 · 04/11/2023 19:05

I’m so ‘glad’ I’m seeing itchy skin so much on here! I’m 45 and the last couple of months my skin has been driving me mad at night with how itchy it is! Guess this is my sign then

Utterbunkum · 04/11/2023 19:07

I was in my early 40s. I recall sore boobs, periods less frequent...it was a bit like puberty for me, but with hot flushes. To be honest, hot flushes were the worst bit for me
Not just hot, it really hurt, like I imagine it would feel to boil alive, but on the whole I think I got off lightly. Oh, I did get hairier. Now 4 years after my last period, I have to shave my chin. Could have done with thinning more on my head, to be honest, my hair is thick and not in a good way.

HamBone · 04/11/2023 19:07

Still have regular periods but they only last three to four days now, which is great.

I’ve gained about half a stone, which means I’ve gone up one dress size, I expect I could lose it by cutting out all treats, but as I’m a still a healthy BMI, I’m not motivated enough!

Had some brain fog about three years ago, but it seems to have lifted.

Occasional hot flushes. This week, for example, I was driving and suddenly I was flushed and boiling hot! It was over quickly though, I turned on the air con.

So I’m OK atm, but who knows what’s around the peri-corner? 🤣

poignant · 04/11/2023 19:10

I am 47 and my periods have changed from regular flow for four days to first day really heavy and rest of the days light. No other symptoms.

Lochness1975 · 04/11/2023 19:12

Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but I haven’t had a period in 6 years, I have the mirena coil. I’m 43 almost, and have woken up in the nights sweating, getting what I would describe as brain fog, really bad anxiety- GP has just put me on meds for it. Does this sound like it could be peri? Thanks

Sparehair · 04/11/2023 19:13

48- main symptom was lack of motivation, itchy skin and poor sleep. I’ve always been on a short fuse so no change there 🤣. HRT has helped a lot. Cutting out alcohol would probably help too but I don’t want to.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 04/11/2023 19:14

Don’t know when my symptoms started, no periods for many years. I started HRT over a year ago.

Brain fog
insomnia
weight gain
joint pain
urinary incontinence
loss of libido
anxiety and mood swings
more prone to depressive episodes

HRT has helped with some symptoms more than others. I’m still overweight, have terrible insomnia and do struggle with my mental health much more.

Ludoole · 04/11/2023 19:18
  1. Period every other week!!! Tiredness is horrendous. Temper has gone out the window. Angry all the time. No appetite at all. It's shit.
JMSA · 04/11/2023 19:19

I was woken the other night with an itchy fanny Blush

JMSA · 04/11/2023 19:20

To be fair, however, I do eat much too much sugar. So it could be that.

FatherJoseFernandez · 04/11/2023 19:21

I started getting symptoms at 38. Brain fog, itching arms, awful fatigue, rage, vaginal dryness and hot flushes. I saw doctor at 39 and was given vagifem, a HRT pessary and that dealt with the dryness but not the rest of the symptoms. I started taking a herbal remedy called black cohosh after my mum recommended it and that’s stopped all the other symptoms completely! I occasionally feel anxious and see black floaters in my eyes but nothing else🤞🏼it stays this way for as long as possible!

Canisaysomething · 04/11/2023 19:23

40, hideous migraines, heavy bleeding, mood swings, anxiety… going to the GP about it soon. Got a mirena coil but it did nothing.

SocialistSally · 04/11/2023 19:30

42, mu periods started going weird at 40. So really heavy and then sometimes 2 in one month so I got a mirena coil.

now I have brain fog, itchiness (especially at night I feel like I want to scratch my skin off), night sweats, hot flushes, wee urgency.

the itchiness is like it is under my skin. Drives me mad!
