People incapable of using headphones

I've just had an argument with someone in a cafe who took umbrage to me politely asking them to turn down the volume on a video they were watching with their whole group on full volume. Apparently, I'm rude for asking them to turn it down. Is this socially acceptable now? It's driving me mad- everywhere I go, people are incapable of using headphones and subject everyone else to their noise. I find I have zero tolerance for it and give a death stare until they get the message. So AIBU? Is this the norm now or are these people just selfish inconsiderate arses?

OP posts:

No it's not. They're arseholes.

OctogenarianDecathlete · 28/10/2023 14:49

YANBU (but people will defend it)

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 28/10/2023 14:52

There was this silly moo in a hospital waiting room the other day, sound on.

I ask her to turn it down, she bleats "but how can I hear it if it's turned down?" Unbelievable.

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/10/2023 14:54

I can't use headphones (very prone to outer ear infections). This means I don't listen to things when I'm out and about. Some people are dickheads.

Zzizzisnotzeproblem · 28/10/2023 14:56

I find it rude but I’m not fond of death starers either.

piglet81 · 28/10/2023 14:56

YANBU and this is one of the worst things about the modern world

pinkysmum · 28/10/2023 14:59

This is my pet hate....and I can't stand it when people have kids on tablets blaring out bloody wheels on the bus over and over when you are trying to relax and have a chat. It is so antisocial.

Dbank · 28/10/2023 15:06

Totally agree, I'm tempted to carry some cheap earbuds and just hand them to them....

TheMadHattter · 28/10/2023 15:19

Totally agree OP! I hate it on the train too. My worst experience was being in hospital (whilst being induced) and the person in the bay opposite me listening to what sounded like reruns of Trisha at 3.30am! Mad behaviour

GambitLovesRogue · 28/10/2023 15:21

I had this on a train once. Its lucky I am not writing this from inside Pentonville.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/10/2023 15:22

It's not now. Remember the enormous stereos that young men used to carry around on their shoulders? Pre-Walkman. Those were the days.

tobee · 28/10/2023 15:26

I was on a tube the other week and 2 young men, not together, were watching TikTok videos on their phones with no headphones, full volume.

Then, this week, a woman was over 60 was playing her phone full volume in a cafe.

Doesn't seem to be age related.

Also lots of people have taken to having phone calls on speaker and shouting into the microphone while holding there phone in front of their mouths, like a cazoo or something.

This seems to be phenomenon of the last few years.

So selfish!

tobee · 28/10/2023 15:27
  • woman was over 60 was = a woman probably over 60

That was reasonably rare tbf

Not in South London @tobee

Bloody everywhere.

LightDrizzle · 28/10/2023 15:55

Yes it’s all ages. With older people it’s often video calls at full volume.

It’s one of my pet hates too and I wish airlines would add it to their announcements along with the prohibitions about smoking.
It was so loud on a recent flight that I actually buzzed the flight assistant, I couldn’t see the perpetrator but the FA returned and relayed “It’s a child!” - Oh well that’s all right then, if it’s a child 🤦‍♀️
My neighbours commiserated and the volume did reduce so maybe she did pass on the mean lady’s request but why on earth hadn’t the accompanying adult told her to turn it off or provided headphones?

You blokes playing noisy games is another one on recent flights.

It’s horrifying that it’s tolerated in hospitals. How are unwell people supposed to recuperate?

Woman on the bus yesterday. FaceTiming her friend, we all enjoyed listening to the early pregnancy symptoms her friend was having, and were amazed at the drama of how she had realised almost within seconds that she had missed her period and was pregnant, her breasts were swelling and she was ordering extra buckets of KFC to feed the foetus. We all felt so involved and emotional, it was a very touching moment.

I'm South London!

Best I had was people over the road sitting on window ledge with open windows, with massive speakers pointing out the open window, playing their shitty music full blast. 😡🤯

tobee · 28/10/2023 16:05

My Dh was a serious chronic illness that involves him having periods in hospital and 3 x weekly clinic treatments and people never use headphones to listen to their devices and there's usually a general telly on full blast.

Obviously, Dh is a very good patient and always uses headphones

They're arseholios and they're everywhere.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 28/10/2023 16:08

I visited my Dad in hospital today and had to ask a nurse to address this from the patient opposite who was blasting something out of his phone at top volume. It's so antisocial

DaphneMoo · 28/10/2023 16:09

Had a young child in front of me on the plane last month playing a game where they won coins with associated sound effects, I was ready to snap

This, and people, sorry, men, pissing in the street are my two personal most hated bugbears and therefore now crusades 😬 (also South London!) outed myself with my twin niche hobbies there.

Where possible I now loudly join in with the FaceTime or comment on the video.
