People incapable of using headphones

I've just had an argument with someone in a cafe who took umbrage to me politely asking them to turn down the volume on a video they were watching with their whole group on full volume. Apparently, I'm rude for asking them to turn it down. Is this socially acceptable now? It's driving me mad- everywhere I go, people are incapable of using headphones and subject everyone else to their noise. I find I have zero tolerance for it and give a death stare until they get the message. So AIBU? Is this the norm now or are these people just selfish inconsiderate arses?

I was on a train with my DC, and somewhere in the carriage somebody was playing a very loud (I think) children's video on a tablet that seemed to reverberate around the space. We just gritted our teeth and tried to ignore it.

After 5-10 minutes of the annoying squeaky voices, beepy music and disco beats, a fabulously no-nonsense lady got up and strode down the carriage, inquiring of the occupants of every row "Who is making that awful noise?" until she found the culprits - a couple with a toddler - and firmly instructed them "Please turn that down or wear headphones!"

To my utter amazement, they sheepishly obeyed, and we had peace for the rest of the journey!

(I wish I'd been that assertive - lady on train, if you're reading, I salute you!).

Edited

If that happened last year on a train from Birmingham to Leeds it might have been me! 😄

My little boy repeats everything he hears when someone is on speaker phone. Not ashamed to say I let him. I get glares as if I'm the rude one, but the person on the other end tends to realise their every word is being heard and ends the call.

I'm always tempted to play a particularly NSFW podcast at full volume without headphones whenever I find myself beside someone letting their kid watch cartoons at full volume without headphones, but I haven't dare yet.

I hate this and really wish it would be added to the list of disallowed behaviour in public places. It's so unnecessary and anti social.

I had a number of train journeys in Spain this summer and they had pictorial signs of this along with no feet on seats, no alcohol, and headphones only! It was brilliant! Why don't we have this??

I also fantasise sometimes about a scenario... I'd love to see how the ignoramus on the train/bus etc listening to their phone at full volume would react if EVERY ONE of the other passengers all took out their headphones and started listening to their music, radio, tv show etc at full volume. Nobody would be able to hear a thing and it would be so absolutely fabulously absurd and annoying that maybe the passenger would get the point!!! Smile

I have just come back from Japan where it is social unacceptable to talk on your phone, play videos etc in trains, restaurants etc. Tgere are signs up everywhere and people take notice. It was bliss.

First week back in England I'm sat next to some stupid woman yapping away to her daughter on her phone right next to me. Nothing of any consequence either just complete inanities. At one point she actually said, 'I better let you go I know you're on your break' and I silently cheered. Unfortunately the other person said it was ok and she had another 10 mins so on she went. It's anti social. Why does anyone think everyone wants to listen to their inane chat?

God this boils my piss (people on devices thinking we all want to listen to them).

It’s rude & entitled to think I want to listen up your phone conversation on loud speaker or FaceTime.

Don’t even start me on kids playing on / listening to electronic devices without earphones because the lazy parent would rather give the kid the electronic babysitter rather then entertain their own child or teach them to entertain themselves.

Selfish, rude & self entitled.

This is a move I could get behind. I think I'd kick off with Barbie Girl by Aqua or maybe that Superman song they played in school discos circa 1985.
