Taking your own bags in same store -embarrassing incident

Not really sure where to put this and can’t really talk about in RL as it’s a non-issue so will look crazy but on here I’m wondering what others would do. I have anxiety so I do worry about everything! Went to B and M yesterday with the kids just to pick up cheap halloween stuff. I had my own bags with me (for the same store). Started packing and woman said it’s x for the bags (can’t remember amount) I said no they’re my bags I brought from home, she sounded unsure then to top it off my 8 year old says “mummy you picked the bags from here!” She probably saw they were the same. I got flustered and told the cashier “look you can see my bags are crumpled so they’re from home”. Lol! Next time I’ll take different bags in, not had that before and yes I know it’s a non issue before anyone likes on just wanted to share my embarrassing moment 🙈

Good for you for remembering to bring bags- I always forget.

OldTinHat · 28/10/2023 08:26

That's so funny! I had bag guilt yesterday because I used Asda bags in Sainsburys and was worried the cashier would think less of me 😆 I never considered the 'same bag, same store' conundrum before your post!

PuttingDownRoots · 28/10/2023 08:32

Some of my bags for life look pristine, and I'm bad at taking the tags off!

trulyunruly01 · 28/10/2023 08:40

That's why my bags for life are full of old receipts, not that I can't be arsed to empty them out.
"No no guvnor, I bought these bags four years ago, look in the bottom, there's every receipt since" 🤣

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 28/10/2023 08:42

If they store believe you stole the bags the onus is on them to probe that. They either have to clearly prove they saw you select the bags or shown he camera evidence that you did. Just clearly state that actually there is no charge as you brought the bags from home. Cameras at the srore entrance would show that too if they ever were stupid enough to challenge you

FarmGirl78 · 28/10/2023 08:43

Non-issue.

MyCircumference · 28/10/2023 08:46

i had the same, in waitrose, have a waitrose bag, went to the loo with my basket of shopping, wondered if somebody might think i was stealing while in the loo!

went to check out, with my bag -
in future, keep a couple of old receipts in the bottom of your bag

i was looked at recently when me and dm went into the shop and then walked out empty handed, now that was weird.

MyCircumference · 28/10/2023 08:47

i have also been known to go back to the shop, to buy extra!

keeps them busy on the security desk Wink

MyCircumference · 28/10/2023 08:48

just like @trulyunruly01

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 28/10/2023 08:51

I had the same in Tesco yesterday. I had a really fresh new Tesco bag for life in my car that I took in with me, I did see the cashier look at it but she didn’t say anything when I didn’t scan it.

Our Tesco is terrible for people not paying for bags for life though, they take them from the desk and don’t scan them, when they should be asking staff for them.

heheheheh · 28/10/2023 08:52

Oh god I had this exact thing with Tesco bags! Obviously wasn't actually afraid of being charged or prosecuted or anything for some bloody bags, but was a really embarrassing showdown/standoff...

Notanotherhousepost · 28/10/2023 08:54

Never paid for a carrier yet on self serve and never intend to. Make great bin bags.

heheheheh · 28/10/2023 08:54

FarmGirl78 · 28/10/2023 08:43

Non-issue.

Non-post.

CurlewKate · 28/10/2023 08:54

I absolutely love taking Aldi and Lidl bags to Waitrose and Sainsbury. I know in reality nobody notices but it amuses me to imagine people drawing their skirts away from me in disgust! 🤣

EatYourVegetables · 28/10/2023 08:57

I was at a self check out with DH the other day, and he was arguing with me that I had to pay for the bags while I was saying I brought them from home, and I had to repeat it three times before he stopped asking “Are you sure? Completely sure? Cause they sell the same bags here? See right there?” Urgh. He’s not 8 years old though.

Thebigblueballoon · 28/10/2023 08:57

I must lack self-awareness when it comes to bags. I’ll flap any old one around any old supermarket.

You’re stealing. It’s theft. And hurting the environment.

ScottChegg · 28/10/2023 09:00

I have, on occasion, wondered vaguely if I should be embarrassed because my bags are fucking BATTERED but now I see it might be an advantage!

MyCircumference · 28/10/2023 09:01

i notice so many people have the waitrose bags in tesco,
they are Good bags!

they have gone up in price though, from 60p to E1

trussedchicken · 28/10/2023 09:05

I always purposely take a different supermarket brand bag to whichever supermarket I'm going to, for this exact reason. It's never happened to me, but the thought of having to explain I brought them from home and didn't just pick them up from the checkout.......😳 But I do tend to overthink most things in life.

AutumnLeaves333 · 28/10/2023 09:08

I once opened my shopping bag to find some forgotten pens that I’d bought the previous shopping trip still in there and was really worried someone would notice and make me pay for them again 🤣

Yep...
I find it hilarious how no-one questions why we as customers are paying a plastic tax for bags the store makes. If there is a problem with plastic and the environment then stop making them... or does the tax offset this damage somehow? How is the plastic bags sitting in the store less damaging to the environment than when someone buys the bag? The production of the bags is also damaging to the environment. No just another tax money maker. M&S make paper bags and still charge for them! It's not a tax so they capitalise on it! Eff off. People have lost sight of the reason we first started paying for carrier bags.

blobby10 · 28/10/2023 09:16

When the ‘bring your own bags’ thing started I seem to recall sainsburys/tesco/morrisons refusing to allow people to pack their shopping into bags from another store! Was this really a thing or another urban myth I fell for?

Please explain how they are hurting the environment... poised, eager, ready for your response...

I once oveheard two security guards talking about watching one woman as she'd gone back in and "people aren't supposed to do that". Clearly they'd never come across people like me who forget things!!
