Taking your own bags in same store -embarrassing incident

Not really sure where to put this and can’t really talk about in RL as it’s a non-issue so will look crazy but on here I’m wondering what others would do. I have anxiety so I do worry about everything! Went to B and M yesterday with the kids just to pick up cheap halloween stuff. I had my own bags with me (for the same store). Started packing and woman said it’s x for the bags (can’t remember amount) I said no they’re my bags I brought from home, she sounded unsure then to top it off my 8 year old says “mummy you picked the bags from here!” She probably saw they were the same. I got flustered and told the cashier “look you can see my bags are crumpled so they’re from home”. Lol! Next time I’ll take different bags in, not had that before and yes I know it’s a non issue before anyone likes on just wanted to share my embarrassing moment 🙈

If I could refer you back to my correction post. I wasn't being rude. I was being to the point to reassure the OP.

@Bumcake

I forgot bags the other day and did scan as you shop. DH toddled off to get bags, had already scanned our QR code on the till so asked the woman there how to scan the bags now, she just said no one cares, just take them.

Are bags for life actually bags for life still? Do they replace them like they used to?

LunaMay · 28/10/2023 14:11

I don't get it? I am in Australia and they don't just give us the bags, they are usually scanned through. So i don't worry about this because if they insisted on scanning them again surely it would show its been purchased?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/10/2023 14:17

In France when you buy a bag for life they cross out the barcode. I keep thinking I should do it on my bags for life here, just in case.

On another thread like this I suggested writing swearwords inside.

'no, this is my bag, you can clearly see I've written cockwomble in it!'

Superhair · 28/10/2023 14:32

I’ve never had any bother when using the bags. I assume the shop worker doesn’t necessarily know and is just checking, usually a quick I have already paid for these is enough.

I don’t think I would be returning to a shop if they made a song and dance out of it and made me feel like I was trying to steal them.

Carrier bag demand went through the floor at the same.time bin bag purchases trebled.

Yes, they do replace them.

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox · 28/10/2023 23:31

I've had this in Aldi but they never asked if I'd brought them from home, I didn't even see her looking but she'd added 2 bags to my bill, only saw on my receipt once I was home 😠
I emailed head office as I didn't want to try and prove it in the store and they said I'd have to take it up in store. I have noticed since though that you have to request a bag from the cashier.
So in now I take Sainsbury and Tesco's in Aldi, stuff them.

So has everyone bought a bag for life and used it for life, and never used any other bag?!

I don't think I've ever bought a bag for life, a few years we bought in the States some bags from Whole Foods made from recycled plastic bottles that seem almost indestructible and are quite attractive. One time an American woman, here with the USAF, asked where Whole Foods was and was disappointed when I said Santa Fe!

Caswallonthefox · 28/10/2023 23:53

I currently have 2 rainbow bags made for IKEA, bought off amazon, so ain't nobody gonna mistake mine. Before that I had a hessian bag with a cat on it.
Plastic bags should no longer be a thing, we managed before plastic was invented, we can manage now.

Have you asked the supermarkets whether there is less demand and less production...? E.g. has it worked?. As I said, if they are so bad - stop producing them. Produce an alternative that people don't have to pay tax on.
What does paying for them do for the environment? Are you so dense you comply with every rule without questioning what you are doing? Clearly

Well someone has:

For the 2018 to 2019 period, the main retailers (Asda, The Co-operative Group, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose) sold 549 million single use plastic bags compared to 1 billion sold in 2017 to 2018. This is a decrease of 490 million bags (a 47% decrease).

@Aclaire, you don't have to keep coming back flogging your dead horse. You could just learn something.

DiscoBeat · 29/10/2023 00:37

You’re stealing. It’s theft. And hurting the environment.

Yep.
