To let my nearly 3 year old watch jurassic Park?

Dino mad at the moment and doesn't scare easily (not that he's watched lots of scary things!).

DH thinks he'll be fine with the first film, I'm on the fence.

What's the general consensus? I watched them myself as a kid and absolutely loved them but I'm not sure how old I was, definitely young primary at least I think.

I'm minded to let him and just skip over a few of the "scarier" bits (first couple of mins, kitchen scene, T Tex & toilet etc..)

Nope.

Roundandround1 · 26/10/2023 23:10

And definitely just the first for now, I think the newer ones are a bit too realistic/scarier.

I honestly don't think it would be suitable. How about The Land Before Time to see how he copes with something more gentle?

NuffSaidSam · 26/10/2023 23:11

Unless he's watched all the other, better, more age appropriate films and is desperate for more content, then no.

Save it until he's older.

Watched these a dozen times! Loves them

Don't be silly. He won't understand the story and he will probably be terrified.
There's plenty of dinosaur cartoons he could watch.

MissingMoominMamma · 26/10/2023 23:11

My son watched the first one at around age 10 and had nightmares for about a year afterwards. Surely there’s something age appropriate about dinosaurs you could find?

Roundandround1 · 26/10/2023 23:13

We've also watched Dinosaur which he enjoyed, Petes dragon (not technically a Dino I know but he liked that one) and a few others which are more for his age

SussexLass87 · 26/10/2023 23:13

Seriously...don't do it. Age ratings are there for a reason, plus they won't be able to understand the story line or the context.

Plenty of age appropriate programmes such as Andy's Dinosaur Adventure or Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs.

NoNeedToHurry · 26/10/2023 23:14

No!!!! Jurassic Park my fave film of all time ever and still makes me jump. So many scary and gruesome scenes not suitable for age 3 - if you are skipping them all what's the point in even watching??

Roundandround1 · 26/10/2023 23:15

Probably right yes! We saw a pic earlier of someone throwing their 3 year old a JP birthday party because they are "obsessed" apparently and it got DH talking about it again.

No no and no
my dd went through a dino phase when she was 3 as did her best friend I was horrified when her mum suggested they watch Jurassic park on a play date.
it is a 12a rating for a reason and there are plenty of age appropriate dinosaur films and tv programs around.

Superstar22 · 26/10/2023 23:21

Mine are terrified of it & were 8&9 when first watched it. Definitely a no

Fionaville · 26/10/2023 23:22

I think my youngest was about 5 when she first watched it and loved it. Like you say, you can fast forward the bloody parts or just watch the first half, before it all goes wrong!

PlantDoctor · 26/10/2023 23:23

What about that walking with dinosaurs documentary?

Fionaville · 26/10/2023 23:24

Also, there is a Jurassic park cartoon on Netflix I think, that's good. And the cartoon Lego Jurassic Park.

LunaLoveFood · 26/10/2023 23:25

What about the lego jurassic Park film?

Orangewall · 26/10/2023 23:28

The Good Dinosaur? Although this made me cry like a baby whilst my baffled toddler watched on 😂
My 5yo likes the idea of Jurassic Park but we had to skip parts of it. My friends son had watched it a fair few times at the same age and loved the whole thing so depends on your DS.

IHeartKingThistle · 26/10/2023 23:31

Hell no.

Sometimeswinning · 26/10/2023 23:32

My dd now 13 would have been 3/4 when she watched it. No trauma or issues. She still doesn’t scare easily. Your call.

GeorgeSpeaks · 26/10/2023 23:35

Although it has a PG certification, the Independent write this in 1993:

'One child whose parent has publicly guided him not to see the film is eight-year-old Max Spielberg. Spielberg senior says he would not allow him or his other children, who are younger, to see the movie because it is 'too intense'.'

So Stephen Spielberg says no!

Buffypaws · 26/10/2023 23:37

I was 8 when it came out and still have nightmares. My four year old brother was fine. I think very young kids don’t get the terror they just like the green car and the dinosaurs.

ludicrous however to say the newer ones are scarier. The first one was terrifying and each subsequent instalment became more slapstick and banal.

My daughter is 4, she is dino mad and loves them. Has watched the newer ones a few times and isn't phased by any gory bits etc and gets really into them, she's not usually one to sit through a film. (We don't usually watch this sort of stuff with them- I personally prefer Bluey 🤣 but she saw them advertised on the sky movies page) My eldest is 8 and she wouldn't watch them though. So I guess it depends on the child and how you think they'd react

Aw we love The Good Dinosaur! He has a Teddy Arlo that's his fave.

My three year old would be terrified. He wouldn’t sleep for weeks. He is scared of the tunnel in Thomas the tank engine and a meg and mog book where worms come out a cauldron though.
