To let my nearly 3 year old watch jurassic Park?

Dino mad at the moment and doesn't scare easily (not that he's watched lots of scary things!).

DH thinks he'll be fine with the first film, I'm on the fence.

What's the general consensus? I watched them myself as a kid and absolutely loved them but I'm not sure how old I was, definitely young primary at least I think.

I'm minded to let him and just skip over a few of the "scarier" bits (first couple of mins, kitchen scene, T Tex & toilet etc..)

Mine watched all the JP movies aged 6 (hard-to-scare youngest) and 8 (more easily scared oldest) progressively over a couple of years and were fine.

Under 3 seems young though.

Canisaysomething · 27/10/2023 01:40

A 2 year old watching Jurassic park 😂. Do you really have to ask?! The animated “jurassic world” series on Netflix are less scary but still not aimed at 2 year olds.

mathanxiety · 27/10/2023 01:48

Tell your H to give his head a massive wobble.

HamBone · 27/10/2023 01:50

I thought DS would be fine seeing the first Jurassic Park at 5…the moment the T-Rex appeared, he burst into tears and we switched it off. Definitely not my finest parenting moment. 😂

DD was 8 and she was fine. I’d advise waiting a few more years.

Dogrough · 27/10/2023 01:55

Put dinopaws on instead!

VeridicalVagabond · 27/10/2023 01:55

I am now a lover of all things horror and gore, but I remember watching Jurassic Park at about 6 and having nightmares for weeks. The opening scene scared the pants off me, but also the spitting dinosaur killing Nedry was really horrible to little-me. And the infamous severed arm.

Unless you want to scare him off dinosaurs, I wouldn't for a few years yet. Every other dinosaur related thing you've mentioned has had the Dino's as the protagonists or positive characters, Jurassic park casts them as the villains. Don't ruin them for him!

MaryShelley1818 · 27/10/2023 02:16

My son watched it at 3yrs and absolutely loved it, he's now 5 (nearly 6) and has seen them all. He isn't remotely scared and loves learning about the dinosaurs and also about movies. He definitely understood it all but he is quite unusual for his age.
DD (nearly 3) not a chance, she'd be terrified and is much more like a "regular" kid of her age.

They're all different 😊

honeybeetheoneandonly · 27/10/2023 02:26

Oddly enough, I would be more inclined to put JP on with a 3 yr old in the room (whom I'm not expecting to pay too much attention to a full action movie) than with a 6-10yr old.
However, I wouldn't be putting it on for a 3yr old to watch.

CastlesinSpain · 27/10/2023 02:30

We took my son to see it when it first came out - it was rated PG at the time - he was 7. He spent parts of the film crouched down behind the seats, afraid to look. Offered to take him outside but he wanted to stay! So I wouldn't show it to a 3 year old.

Mydustymonstera · 27/10/2023 04:02

Dino Dana!! On prime. There are tons of episodes and it’s genuinely brilliant. Quite watchable for grownups.

there is also Lego Jurassic park episodes (cartoon) they are awful but at least aimed at young kids.

You’d be mad to watch JP with him.

smilesup · 27/10/2023 04:08

Your options are to
A) let him watch it and potentially scare him, maybe for a while.
B) do something else that won't scare him.

Unless you like potentially upsetting your child why bother?

Why not watch walking with dinosaurs instead. Or play with toy dinosaurs or read a dinosaur book, or go to a museum with dinosaurs....

stayflufft · 27/10/2023 04:12

I actually watched it with my child this week - had no idea that the rating was reviewed and it was upgraded from a PG to a 12A in August of this year. My child is not 12 - nowhere near! They enjoyed the film, we watched it together and talked about what was happening and the various dinos etc all the way through and today we went a bought a few Jurassic World toys. They loved the film and were not scared at all - but I wouldn’t show it to my youngest child.

SunRainStorm · 27/10/2023 04:41

I let my child watch the start.

Skip over the raptor scene at the very beginning- then they can watch until the weather gets bad.

He'll see:

Archeology dig
Helicopter ride
Braciasaurous (no idea how to spell it)
Baby dinosaur hatching
The Mr DNA cartoon
Sick Triceratops and pile of poo (favourite of my son)

And then turn it off when it starts to get cloudy because that's when it gets scary!

As far as my child knows, Jurassic park is a movie about some people having a fabulous time!

moleeye · 27/10/2023 05:03

My 4.5 year old wants to watch it (specifically "Jurassic World" as it has Owen in it) I've told him nope.

BookishBabe · 27/10/2023 05:14

They scared me as a child.
And I ended up regularly having dinosaur related nightmares.
I still get them sometimes now as an adult!
I'd say too scary.

CliffsofMohair · 27/10/2023 05:16

Looking for an age appropriate way to share dinosaurs with your 2 year old in a way that won’t leave them needing therapy you say?

stayathomer · 27/10/2023 05:18

Are you not fast forwarding a lot of it so? The whole point of it is it’s a jump scares type for younger kids (like 9/10 year olds).

BitofaStramash · 27/10/2023 05:19

Way too young

Chickenkeev · 27/10/2023 05:20

Yabu. It's scary!

Anyflippingname · 27/10/2023 06:16

This is mad. He'd be totally overwhelmed by it in terms of senses and very frightened too.

Laney79 · 27/10/2023 06:50

Not a movie but have you seen dinosaur train on Netflix? My three year old loves it. I wouldn't let him watch Jurassic park yet myself. Some scenes would be fine but some are too scary.

ShoesoftheWorld · 27/10/2023 06:56

Nearly 3 ?! Bloody hell no.

My dino-obsessed, wants-to-be-a-palaeontologist 8yo hasn't seen it yet and neither will she until she is a lot closer to the actual age rating. My older two would have been 11ish.

What's the hurry with exposing children to content far too old for them? I see it lots on here. It's worst with films, obviously, but I feel the same about books. What 4-5yo, for example, can have a proper grasp of Harry Potter?

menopausalmare · 27/10/2023 07:05

Definitely not. Stick with Andy's dinosaur adventures. Even 'walking with dinosaurs ' terrified my then 4 year old.

LylaLee · 27/10/2023 07:06

The old 90s sitcom Dinosaurs? It's on Disney plus and full episodes on YouTube.

Also, is the child watches the David Attenborough series on repeat that's more than enough content.

Think of it as saving it for when he's older and will enjoy it more, maybe?

There's a TV series based on How To Train Your Dragon, maybe he'd like that. (I know it's dragons not dinosaurs, but you did say he liked Pete's Dragon.)
