To let my nearly 3 year old watch jurassic Park?

Dino mad at the moment and doesn't scare easily (not that he's watched lots of scary things!).

DH thinks he'll be fine with the first film, I'm on the fence.

What's the general consensus? I watched them myself as a kid and absolutely loved them but I'm not sure how old I was, definitely young primary at least I think.

I'm minded to let him and just skip over a few of the "scarier" bits (first couple of mins, kitchen scene, T Tex & toilet etc..)

My children all watched it quite young, but then I've never really censored anything except porn.

Watch one of the big Dino programmes, good ones on Appletv if you have or you'll get some on iPlayer for free, just big moving dinos no terrifying story. It's a bit of a leap with content of hunting, death, gore and fear.

@LaviniasBigBloomers same in this house.

You know your own child best. My son was watching them at 3, took him to watch Jurassic World for his 4th birthday, they’re 12A the new ones so was fine with an adult. He’s 12 now and still loves them all, always a go to family night film. If he gets overwhelmed you can always just turn it off.

The originals were PG forever! I remember watching them in the cinema as a child so would have been 3-4ish.

I understand that. I meant it more in the sense that the child had likely seen the films already considering they were apparently JP obsessed and it was only their 3rd birthday.

Or maybe like many 3 year olds he liked Dino's so they called it that

Have you tried Jurassic park camp Cretaceous. It’s scary enough I think. It’s a kids programme but is ok the way towards Jurassic park.

Luddite26 · 30/10/2023 06:17

I just had a think and my son was born in 91 and we watched this definitely on holiday in 94 so he was 3 just turned. It never even crossed my mind whether he would be scared! I don't remember any problems but of course TV screens were different then it may be more in your face now.
You know your own child.

Have you tried Jurassic park camp Cretaceous

i think this is quite scary, some tense bits & jump scares. It’s really good, I love anything JP!

Walking with dinosaurs the movie on Disney plus. DS2 and I love that one.

(I watched the original jurassic Park at the cinema aged 7/8 and was terrified of trexes at bedtime for months)

Katypp · 30/10/2023 06:52

My son was dino mad too (still is at 30!). He loved the BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs which would be fine for your daughter I think. The narration would probably go over her head (although don't count on it) but he will love the dinos.

Carpetmoth · 30/10/2023 07:16

There's a children's series linked to Jurassic Park called Camp Cretaceous. Might have been on Netflix.

Carpetmoth · 30/10/2023 07:18

Sorry I've realised others have suggested that. I'd exhaust more child friendly ones first. It also means they will have something new when a bit older.

anotherside · 30/10/2023 07:24

Jurassic Park is a movie for teenagers/adults.

As to people saying “I let my 3/4 year old watch it with no adverse effects” - that should be no adverse effects that I’m aware of. Obviously kids don’t always let on when they’ve been negatively impacted or traumatised by an experience.

Crafthead · 30/10/2023 07:34

Is this more of an obsession than a passing toddler fad? I know it's cute when they love something and we want to share cultural heritage with kids but I'm a bit mystified as to why you want to expose him to something that might scare him and that he probably won't understand fully (three year olds generally understand far less of what they watch than we typically assume, if you question them on it afterwards). Is there no age appropriate alternative?

Nubnut · 30/10/2023 07:53

Totally insane

Z1hun · 30/10/2023 08:19

My uncle put jurassic Park on for my brother when he was 4 because he was Dino mad and it terrified him. He had nightmares for weeks. Might not affect your DS but why risk it!
