AIBU to find cyclists annoying

MumOfTheNorth · 07/10/2023 00:11

This probably is unreasonable but I just find cyclists so annoying. Not saying every cyclist does every one of these things. It just seems to happen a lot. Am I the only one that gets this irrational irritation?

What I find annoying...

  • Taking up the whole road so you can't leave enough space to safely over take
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Walking around cafes or the office in sweaty lycra with their click clacky shoes
  • Running red lights when I'm trying to cross on a green man
  • Cycling on the pavement
  • Not tucking in on small country roads once in a while when there's a massive que of traffic behind them
  • Having no lights or helmet on in the dark
  • And most of all... talking to me about cycling

If the only option to get to work is to prevent others from travelling at an appropriate speed by cycling down a dangerous, winding, narrow country lane, you're naturally going to make others late to get to their destination.

Apparently you know better than I do how busy the country lanes around here may be. Apart from the fact that if you are cycling "down" a lane, one has gravity on one's side so will be going as fast as it is safe to do.

Still, once I get into town I see all of these metal boxes blocking the way. How selfish of them to take up such a vast expanse of road space (the average car is occupied by 1.3 people) causing gridlock.

A death caused by careless driving (“without due care and attention”) is very, very rarely charged as manslaughter. Judges and juries understand perfectly well that a moment’s distraction is not a matter so culpable that a person should go to prison for years because of it. ‘There but for the grace of god…’ etc.

In many cases in sentencing a judge will say that the accused will have to live with the anguish, which is punishment in itself. I said upthread something about the long-term harm caused to people caught up in accidents caused by cyclists.

Recklessness of drivers is different.

The fact remains that the easiest way to get away with murder is to make it look like an RTA.

Cyclists are rarely late for work which makes it a great option for commuting in many circumstances

I'm not surprised.
They jump every red light they come to.
Hmm

Sigmama · 08/10/2023 16:40

User1477, Japan sounds amazing, I had no idea it was so pro cycling, how very forward thinking

The shell beach, ah no I was referring to the lack of traffic jams, not all cyclists jump red lights, not all drivers do either, but I see plenty on my commute, very impatient

NotTerfNorCis · 08/10/2023 16:42

As a learner driver, my heart sinks when I see a cyclist up ahead.

Sigmama · 08/10/2023 16:43

Armwrestling, kids are allowed on the pavement

Sigmama · 08/10/2023 16:44

Notterf, believe me the feelings's mutual

As an experienced driver my heart sinks when I see a cyclist up ahead.

Because you know that you'll have to stop speeding and actually stick to the 20mph speed limits that are quite widespread now?

No.
I stick to speed limits.
I follow the rules of the road, which funnily enough incudes stopping at red lights.

I stop at all red lights too. Does my unfair generalisation tell you something about your unfair generalisations?

I'm referring specifically to roads that are that condition.

Sigmama · 08/10/2023 18:03

Theshellbeach, so you're driving around with all that antipathy towards cyclists who are doing you no harm, doesn't sound like a great state of mind for safe driving

MinnieMountain · 08/10/2023 18:19

Nah, @TheShellBeach jumps all the lights. I know that because I find car drivers irritating, therefore any generalisations I make about them are true.

Were you?

Yet you were singling me out as apparently delaying ten cars. You appear to know more about my route to work than I do.

TheShellBeach · 08/10/2023 18:50

These threads always go the same way.

Those who think cyclists should all be hanged and those who think they should all be deified.

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 08/10/2023 18:55

Not had chance to read the whole thread, but I think YABU. Generally when a cyclist is in the middle of the lane, it is so they don't get crushed into the edge if you try to overtake and realise there's something coming in the opposite direction. Yes, there are arse hole cyclists out there, just as there are arse hole drivers. I'd rather spend 10 minutes behind a cyclist on a country lane than risk having to make a dangerous manoeuvre that puts both them and I at risk.

Cyclists have just as much right to be on the road as motorists. And that's coming from someone who doesn't even own a bike.

some roads are just plain dangerous to be cycling on

Yep.

Sigmama · 08/10/2023 19:03

Theshellbeach, there is a middle ground between death and sainthood, but i know which way you lean, it might be better to live a life where you don't wish death on those doing you little harm

I was speaking metaphorically. I don't literally think that cyclists should be hanged.

I just meant that people on these threads tend to take up a position and decline to deviate from it.
