AIBU to find cyclists annoying

MumOfTheNorth · 07/10/2023 00:11

This probably is unreasonable but I just find cyclists so annoying. Not saying every cyclist does every one of these things. It just seems to happen a lot. Am I the only one that gets this irrational irritation?

What I find annoying...

  • Taking up the whole road so you can't leave enough space to safely over take
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Walking around cafes or the office in sweaty lycra with their click clacky shoes
  • Running red lights when I'm trying to cross on a green man
  • Cycling on the pavement
  • Not tucking in on small country roads once in a while when there's a massive que of traffic behind them
  • Having no lights or helmet on in the dark
  • And most of all... talking to me about cycling

All road users who do not pay insurance or road tax bother me greatly. Quite agree OP.

MrsJamin · 07/10/2023 04:37

@Superduper02 you didn't just use the most stupid anti-cycling argument ever did you?! 😂 Come on, specify exactly what fictional "road tax" you're referring to!

Fifireee · 07/10/2023 03:54

Oh that mean side of mumsnet.
What I love is a big polluting 4x4!! Blooming love em.
It’s always good to know the people triggered by cyclists because they’re the ones to avoid.

Driver who loathes 4x4s here! They're scary enough in my tiny Corolla, I'd hate to be anywhere near them on a bike.

Yellowlily8 · 07/10/2023 04:38

The worst is how so many of them ride over pedestrian crossings when their light is red. I've been hit twice by bikes when trying to cross the road. Soo dangerous.

Dentistlakes · 07/10/2023 04:40

I don’t mind cyclists as long as they stick to the rules of the road. I don’t know how they do it tbh. The number of times I see them nearly get hit by lunatic drivers, every day there’s an incident. It’s so dangerous. That’s not to say I don’t think they should be cycling, but that their lives are at risk each time they do. The behaviour of car drivers is terrifying.

Same, and once some jackass (a MAMIL iirc) yelled at me for stepping out when it was the green walk light.

I stop at red lights.

i’ve actually had my arse grabbed more than once while doing so.

i’m currently nursing a sore shoulder where I had to slam on and skid to avoid a child whose dad had sent him across the road, from between parked cars, right in front of me. No apology, no expression of appreciation, just a stare while I picked myself up and the child skipped off to school.

there are idiots everywhere.

That’s all drivers, road tax was abolished by Churchill in 1937

some drivers pay car tax, but it’s a choice whether you purchase a car that is eligible

there are 1million driver’s without insurance on the roads

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 07/10/2023 05:12

I’m a cyclist and I don’t do the stuff you mentioned. I find drivers far more annoying and entitled and to be honest cycling keeps me really fit and healthy and doesn’t harm the planet so I don’t care whether you’re annoyed 😉

WereYouListeningToTheDudesStory · 07/10/2023 02:36

They drive me batty too. Especially the ones who cycle around all in black, in the dark and heavy rain, on a country lane. If I hit one, I'm not going to be injured and they could die. I don't want to spend my life knowing I killed someone!

And the ones who have absolutely no shame about holding up a mile of traffic. How entitled do you have to be to prevent that many other people from making progress? It's maddening.

How entitled do you have to be expecting others to move out your way so you aren’t held up for a few minutes?

what do you expect cyclists to do? Somehow evaporate out of cars way? We’re hated for riding on the pavement, or is that ok if it’s to let cars past? If there’s no pavement where do we go?

usually all we can do is keep going and at some point traffic will be able to pass. It’s not entitled or “preventing people from making progress”, it’s using the road correctly and legally.

are you also maddened by other slow moving road uses like horses?

MikeRafone · 07/10/2023 05:27

Cyclists are breaking rules at the same rate as motorists, of course the difference is with a car it’s much easier to kill. 5 people a day are killed along with several thousand injured. It’s easier to notice cyclists breaking the law than drivers speeding, driving with excess alcohol or drugged. Though driving through red lights is definitely a thing with 183 daily caught, and they’ll be several thousand not caught each year. Me tourists crashes cost the economy £31 bn annually, that around £10bn more than is raised in car associated taxes

drhf · 07/10/2023 05:32

I’m disabled and I’ve been knocked down three times by cyclists, twice necessitating a hospital visit. They are less dangerous than cars, but cars don’t drive on the pavement. When I ask cyclists politely to move into the road they are often rude and aggressive.

There should be enforcement of traffic rules for cyclists - and they should leave pavements to pedestrians (except designated cycleways). When I was young, friends used to get pulled over and fined for riding without lights at night, riding on the pavement etc. Now the attitude seems to be that traffic rules are only suggestions that cyclists can ignore if they feel like it.

Oysterbabe · 07/10/2023 05:40

Yeah you're the only one. This is a brand new take that definitely doesn't come up virtually daily.

garlictwist · 07/10/2023 05:41
  • Taking up the whole road so you can't leave enough space to safely over take
You shouldn't be passing until it's safe to do so, they have as much legal right to be on the road as you
  • Weaving in and out of traffic

Sometimes the safest way to get around

  • Walking around cafes or the office in sweaty lycra with their click clacky shoes
Yes, you're right. They should take them off and be naked
  • Running red lights when I'm trying to cross on a green man
Not all cyclists
  • Cycling on the pavement

See above

  • Not tucking in on small country roads once in a while when there's a massive que of traffic behind them

This is not safe to do so. See point 1.

  • Having no lights or helmet on in the dark

Not legal requirements and again, not all cyclists

  • And most of all... talking to me about cycling

I'm sure you wang on about boring things too. Perhaps how much you hate cyclists?

Mercurial123 · 07/10/2023 05:49

Another anti cyclists thread ... there hasn't been one for at least a week?

connie26 · 07/10/2023 05:55

The way they put their water bottle on your car roof when you're sat at the traffic lights. It's a car, not a coaster, dick head!

Martin83 · 07/10/2023 05:58

It's insane the way cyclists drive. They should pass a test before they allowed on a road. You don't feel safe both as a pedestrian and as a driver. I have lived for many years in Oxford and seen so many accidents that I will never sit on a bicycle again.

Superduper02 · 07/10/2023 04:34

You do realise that

  1. "Road tax" doesn't exist
  2. quite a lot of cars are £0 emissions based vehicle excise duty.
  3. most cyclists are insured if only because their bikes are expensive.
mellongoose · 07/10/2023 06:05

When they confidently wave you past. It's never safe, unless I, the driver, can see if it's safe to pass.

Just this week it happened. If I'd gone when she waved, I'd have been in the lane of an oncoming car.

Yet there they are. Waving with such confidence. 🤷‍♀️

MWNA · 07/10/2023 06:06

Cyclists annoy the shit out if me. Can't stand them.

panelbottle · 07/10/2023 06:08

Well if all the cyclists switched to cars there would be far more congestion.

However so hate the running of red lights, & cycling on pavements as a pedestrian. And the lack of helmets, high viz or some makes me what to shout out to them about safety.

panelbottle · 07/10/2023 06:09

And shitty drivers drive me mad, too many poor ones.

ichundich · 07/10/2023 06:21

I was going to vote YABU until I read your last sentence - cyclists talking to you about cycling. Why do they think it's interesting?! Same with parkrun; I know someone who shoehorns her parkruns into every conversation. It's just exercise and about as news worthy as me talking about the fact that I read a book last night...

countrygirl99 · 07/10/2023 06:26

panelbottle · 07/10/2023 06:09

Yep.
Why, when it's foggy or poor visibility for any reason do so many motorists not put their lights on.
Why do so many motorists overtake approaching a blind bend or the brow if a hill.
Why do so many motorists exceed the speed limit.
Why is there so much really bad parking, especially around schools.
Why do motorists tailgate.
Why do people use their phone while driving.
And haven't we all had someone overtake when we are turning right?

hoglets · 07/10/2023 06:36

you dislike them on the road and on pavement. where are they supposed to cycle and do you suggest a change of clothing incl shoes before they enter a cafe? I guess you are not sitting super close to them. what has it got to do with you what they wear?
