AIBU to find cyclists annoying

MumOfTheNorth · 07/10/2023 00:11

This probably is unreasonable but I just find cyclists so annoying. Not saying every cyclist does every one of these things. It just seems to happen a lot. Am I the only one that gets this irrational irritation?

What I find annoying...

  • Taking up the whole road so you can't leave enough space to safely over take
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Walking around cafes or the office in sweaty lycra with their click clacky shoes
  • Running red lights when I'm trying to cross on a green man
  • Cycling on the pavement
  • Not tucking in on small country roads once in a while when there's a massive que of traffic behind them
  • Having no lights or helmet on in the dark
  • And most of all... talking to me about cycling

@ClassicCremeAnglaise but the difficulty of regulating it is never a valid excuse not to do something.

It definitely is! That's literally how policy works.

You identify a problem and then find workable, achievable, proportionate measures to address/solve the problem without unintended consequences such as putting off law abiding cyclists. You weigh up the pros and cons.

I don't like people having dangerous dogs/dogs who shit everywhere but I don't think they should be licensed and cameras everywhere to stop it.

In an ideal world, we should have properly maintained, entirely separate cycle lanes that allow cyclists to get to their destination without endangering themselves or causing a huge amount of inconvenience to others, and also, where possible, get them there a lot more directly than a car would.

This would involve taking space away from cars, which always causes huge rows and 'war on motorist' bullshit

Sigmama · 07/10/2023 16:26

Why would you want fewer cyclists? That's more drivers - You're all sitting in traffic jams half the time as it is

It's sheer jealousy.

it's a more than a bit naive to assume than "fewer cyclists on the road" = more cars.

Sigmama · 07/10/2023 17:03

Classiccreme, interesting logic you have, you do know many commuter cyclists used to drive ?

arethereanyleftatall · 07/10/2023 17:03

When people talk about cyclists being annoying, it's safe to assume they're not talking about the ones who commute to work by bike instead of driving - they are talking about the always entitled, arrogant, superior large groups of mamils of a weekend.

Actually, I am very much talking about the ones who commute to work.

I only saw the MAMILs once I retired and moved to rural Scotland, and they're fairly annoying, but when I lived and worked in London, the cyclists on the roads in the mornings and evenings were a nightmare.

They invariably went through red lights as if the lights did not apply to them.

The arrogance was breath-taking.

Sigmama · 07/10/2023 17:14

Ah - like those always entitled, arrogant, superior, large groups of drivers that clog our roads?

Sigmama · 07/10/2023 17:15

The arrogance of drivers is truly breath taking

Some drivers.

Also some cyclists. 🤷‍♀️

Justifiedcheese · 07/10/2023 17:19

MumOfTheNorth · 07/10/2023 00:26

And cyclists doing some of these behaviours can be fatal for pedestrians which I notice you don't mention

Ah, but cyclists are Saving The Planet, don't you know? In a way that apparently pedestrians aren't.🙄
Innumerable near misses and collisions from bikes rushing up behind me with no bell or verbal warning. According to some I should have been hugging the hedge or constantly looking behind me to save their majesties the trouble of bothering...

Justifiedcheese · 07/10/2023 17:20

And the arrogance of cyclists is fucking annoying.

Yrs, a pedestrian

arethereanyleftatall · 07/10/2023 17:28

Ah, fair enough @TheShellBeach

You must get different types of annoying cyclists in different places. Only common link being annoying and cyclists.

Did you read the thread?

I think the big difference for me, based on my own experience only is that it is 100% of cyclists who are entitled, arrogant wankers compared to about 10 % of drivers (very possibly those cyclists)

partypant · 07/10/2023 17:30

Superduper02 · 07/10/2023 04:34

All road users who do not pay insurance or road tax bother me greatly. Quite agree OP.

There is no road tax. There is vehicle excise duty which charges emissions. Unless you want to count farts, bikes don't produce emissions

You just said about 3 posts ago that people aren't talking about 100% of cyclists, but now you just said that it's 100% of cyclists

arethereanyleftatall · 07/10/2023 17:33

@OneTC No. 🤭 Clearly I should have. I'll go back and do better.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/10/2023 17:34

And again, good point @OneTC
I'll put my wine down.
And clarify - 100% of the weekend group mamils round where I live are definitely wankers.

eastegg · 07/10/2023 17:35

The first thing on your list is rubbish. Unpacking it, what you’re saying is that you want the cyclist to stay close enough to the kerb so you can get past without going on the other side of the road. But why should they? Why do you think you have a right to get past them with no trouble? Overtaking is an inherently dangerous manoeuvre, if you can’t do it safely don’t do it. Expecting the cyclist to make it easier for you at cost to their own safety (riding in the gutter makes it more likely you would get too close to them by squeezing between them and a car coming the other way) is massively unreasonable.

So you may have a point with some of your other gripes but YABU because you totally lost me at the first one.

OneTC · 07/10/2023 17:44

I'll put my wine down.

GrinWine

Chuck it this way if you don't want it

DdraigGoch · 07/10/2023 18:00

Myneighboursarewankers · 07/10/2023 07:42

Actually cyclists cause much more traffic as they don’t bloody move so cars can pass 😂 they should be banned honestly

No. Traffic jams are caused by sheer volume of motorised traffic.

AIBU to find cyclists annoying
MinnieMountain · 07/10/2023 18:07

So I’d have to spend £5 each way on a taxi for my office days rather than cycle 10 minutes? Don’t be ridiculous.

MinnieMountain · 07/10/2023 18:08

That was in reply to @TheShellBeach .
