Not surprised at Iowa & as far as I'm concerned Haley & DiSantis have no one to blame but themselves. By them both saying that not only would they vote for a convicted felon but that they'd actually pardon him, they've basically told the GOP electorate (moderates AND cult members) that Trump's behaviour and legal woes are to be ignored. That they're no big deal and/or a witch hunt. If you set those issues aside (and it seems the GOP and its electorate are) he speaks their language, even the moderates; anti immigration, pro guns, anti choice, and 'my troubles are the fault of 'the others'.

I think Trump will get the nomination no matter what his upcoming trials reveal. Whether or not he can beat Joe remains to be seen. The Dem electorate will need to have a HUGE voter turnout and Joe will have to pick up a goodly number of independent voters because I think that even the moderates in the GOP will vote the party line. They may hold their noses doing it, but they won't vote Dem.

Trump supporters seem to be embracing the 'dictatorship' idea, how did that happen?

Same reason many Germans embraced Hitler. Because they believed he'd only 'dictate' against people other than themselves.

@Roussette

I've noticed his slurred speech too. Either new teeth, he's had a stroke, or he's burning his candle at both ends and is exhausting himself.

My mother said never ill-wish anyone, so I'll not comment on which I would like to be true.

How bloody depressing.

Slurred speech could be new teeth or a stroke or a mini stroke as you say. He's so unfit, I do just wonder how he still manages to string a sentence together

A fair few Independents seem to have resented Dobbs vs Jackson enough to scupper the mid-term "red wave".

If enough Republicans don't vote at all, that'll be a help. There are already quite a number of Iowan Republicans who supported De Santis and Haley who say they won't vote for Trump no matter what, and a whole lot more nationwide saying that if he is found guilty on even one of the counts against him they won't vote for him; if these people stick with what they are saying now, the turnout in the coming election may be a little on the low side. Mind you, he has already been found guilty in the E Jean Carroll case and they don't seem to have minded about that, or maybe many have and are just not being asked....

But as has been said, polls this far out are pretty meaningless.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/01/2024 21:48

It would be even more so if so many of the posters on it were not shills or bots.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/01/2024 21:56

I'm hoping we can avoid the bots this go 'round.

For the 'old timers' who remember the name of the poster/bot on our original threads back in '15 and '16, whatever you do don't turn the lights off, look in the mirror, and say their name 3 times. lol

Posted with you.

There weren't a lot of them as I recall. Just one (as in my post above) was rather frequent and annoying. Sort of like that annoying mosquito in your bedroom at night. You can hear them buzzing next to your head but no matter how many times you swat in their direction, you just can't seem to squash them.

I have just seen the New Teeth. They are Terrifyingly White (my lettings agent before my recent move turned up one day with new, blinding white, teeth and I found them Terrifying as well).

Way back, when Trump was running for President the first time round, I thought I saw him sort of surreptitiously giving the sign of the cross. Forgot about this till I saw a clip of him last night, and saw him doing something similar again. Rewound, rewatched, and I think he is giving the Sign of the TShock(?)

I'd happily give him the Sign of the V.

It's slightly chilling that Trump turned up in court for jury selection but left before opening statements. It's almost like he just wanted to psych potential jurors...

I think it's to show the cult that he is 'having' to show up to court when he should be on the campaign trail.

That's part of the '2024 election fixing witch hunt' plot you know, to keep him from campaigning and away from the cameras in order to 'silence his message'.

And the scary part is....they're buying it!!!

OP posts:
BruceAndNosh · 17/01/2024 16:01

And the bleeding obvious has only just occurred to me.
Trump and Habba are still whining about "having to choose between attending court or funeral". Um, Trump and Melania KNEW that he was scheduled in court this week, why didnt they arrange his MIL's funeral for NEXT week?

AcrossthePond55 · 17/01/2024 16:03

@SequentialAnalyst

You mean like the old anti-evil eye/anti-hex sign? That's weird, unless it's now starting to mean something to white supremacists.

If I thought it would work, I'd go to one of his rallies, make eye contact, and mutter like Snape during the Quidditch game just to scare the shit out of him.

@AcrossthePond55

Like the sign of the cross, with only the across and down bit. The impression I got the first time, when I wasn't sure of what I was seeing, was of a bishop surreptitiously blessing his congregationShock. The gesture was made quite low, at his side, most people would have been focussed on his face.

As I say, the other day when I thought I saw similar, I rewound and rewatched, and was convinced enough to wonder whether there is a kind of Trump handsign going around, for those in the know, started by the Orange One himself.

I know I sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I dismissed the first case as me seeing things, until I noticed the (seemingly) second recent instance.

SequentialAnalyst · 17/01/2024 16:40

I'm really only suggesting he makes a hand sign of T (for Trump) to his supporters. A perfectly innocuous thing to do.

Usually I was listening to what he was saying,; only occasionally did I sometimes look at his incredibly small hands.

Edited

I checked the Southern Poverty Law Center's webpage on 'hate signs' and didn't see it there as far as a 'hate group' sign, but who knows? Maybe it is 'T for Trump'. I wouldn't put it past either him or the cult to start some 'secret handshake' or whatever.

We could all start spreading the rumour that it's the pre-Christian sign for the Hammer of Thor, and spread a little alarm and despondency among his followers!

Is there any truth in the stories/rumours that Michelle Obama could be replacing Biden as presidential candidate this summer?

My partner (US citizen living in U.K.) does think Biden could pull out when the time is right. They think the Dem candidate could end up being someone like Gretchen Whitmer (Gov of Michigan) but also thinks that there is zero chance that Michelle Obama would run.

I would be very shocked if Michelle Obama ran for President. She’s always been very vocal that she would not be interested in doing so.

If Trump were somehow not the nominee, I don’t think Biden would care to run, but there’s no primary in place for the Democrats. I don’t know if they can just randomly nominate someone without the public having a choice.

I agree that Michelle has no interest in being POTUS.

But I doubt very much that Joe will pull out for someone else. It would take a candidate whose popularity and political 'chops' give poll numbers that soar into the stratosphere and we just don't have anyone like that right now. There are plenty of possibilities; Newsom, Buttigieg, Whitmer, Harris to name a few. But none of them can swoop in with the 'numbers' to push Joe off the catbird seat. Maybe if they'd gotten in the race early on Joe could have gracefully said he didn't want to run for a 2nd term and backed one of them but I think it's too late for that now.

There are primaries for the Democratic party, the dates vary state to state. They start 28 Jan and the last one is 8 Jun. My state's is in March.

The nomination is done at the Convention in August where each individual State's delegates, the number of which is based on population, vote for the candidate chosen via the primary election. They're supposed to vote for that candidate, but it has been known to happen that a delegate votes for a different candidate (highly frowned upon).

Some primaries are 'winner take all', some are proportional for each candidate.
