Please can Trump explain why if he "did nothing wrong" he so desperately needs immunity...

by the same token, if the Mar-a-Lago documents really are "declassified" why are team Trump treating them as classified ?

AcrossthePond55 · 09/01/2024 22:58

Good 'round up' of points during the hearing.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/09/politics/takeaways-from-the-appeals-court-hearing-on-donald-trumps-immunity-claims/index.html

TBH I didn't listen/watch. The hearings about hearings about hearings about charges is a merry go round I'm not getting on right now. It's too frustrating and, frankly, upsetting to hear the bullshit the defense comes up with. I wait til the court day is over then read the recap (as above). I do feel encouraged that it appears the judges 'expressed deep skepticism' but even that doesn't necessarily mean their decision will follow that skepticism. We can only hope.

When it comes down to the trials I'll be watching what's televised and/or reading the 'live update' written stream on CNN.

Takeaways from the appeals court hearing on Donald Trump’s immunity claims | CNN Politics

A federal appeals panel expressed deep skepticism Tuesday toward Donald Trump’s argument that he can’t be prosecuted for trying to overturn the 2020 election, raising the potentially extreme implications of absolute presidential immunity.

I know. Plus, all judgements seem to be irrelevant as they’ll eventually end up in the Supreme Court, probably after the election.

If the federal court throws out this immunity nonsense, then there's no compelling reason for the supremes to weigh in. There's no reason for them to rule in a situation where they agree with the lower court.

I believe it's called "due process". Something that authoritarians hate.

😂😂

Love the way he kept saying 'if there are no more questions' and the judges kept pulling him back. He was really trying to end the ordeal.

He tried 4 times to wriggle out of the direct question on impeachment then criminal prosecution process. That judge was determined to nail his rear to the barn door on that one. You could almost hear him physically squirming.

What is so galling is that Mitch McConnel, several others and TRUMP's OWN LAWYERS said during / after the impeachment hearing that the Jan 6th impeachment was not necessary because the DOJ could charge him criminally after he left office if they thought they had a case!

What do you think of the accusations being thrown at Fani Willis now?

What do you think of the accusations being thrown at Fani Willis now?

People who are going to believe them are going to believe them. On the other hand people with brains will wonder how on earth it took untold millions of dollars of legal expertise so long to uncover whatever it is they are claiming.

It says more about their desperation than anything.

And the best thing about team Trump is they've been totally and utterly unable to make any provision for Trump losing. Because Trump ordered them not to.

greenacrylicpaint · 11/01/2024 15:06

watching with hslf an eye as in a very boooooooooring meeting

the hair/suits/make up of the lawyers (male and female)look like hard work. do they all have an hour set aside each morning for grooming?

AcrossthePond55 · 11/01/2024 20:53

Today in Trumpworld. CNN live update article on Trump's court appearance today. I believe closing arguments from the AG's office are still going on.

Also, he's announced that he's going to attend E Jean Carroll's Defamation Suit trial next week. Wonder if he's going to demand to speak at that one, too. He intends to 'tell the judge he has no idea who she is'.

so. Iowa.

what do the republican party see in the orange one?
what do they see that we don't (or the other way round)?

newnamethanks · 16/01/2024 09:55

Oh America. What happened to you?

PerkingFaintly · 16/01/2024 10:14

There was a James Comey interview a while back, and of the Trumpists he said simply, "Lies work. That's why they tell them."

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/01/2024 10:19

The Trumpsters also think that anything said against Trump is a lie. They actively expect everything to be lies.

But they are actually fewer than half the Republican voters, for all that very slightly over half the primary votes in Iowa went his way.

If I were wanting to vote against Trump in Iowa I wouldn't bother to go out in a snowstorm, whereas his fanatical cult-members will.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 10:36

Trump supporters seem to be embracing the 'dictatorship' idea, how did that happen?

borntobequiet · 16/01/2024 10:42

I hope the caucuses (I understand there aren’t many states that still use these) and primaries give a misleading picture of Trump’s popularity, and eventually scupper him.

Darkandstormynite · 16/01/2024 10:43

What do you think will be the financial penalty imposed in the E. Jean Carroll case?

$148M for Giuliani set a new record.

Will be interesting to see what Engoron imposes as well. Pundits are suggesting >$500M

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2024 10:57

Quite a few Trump threads are popping up on MN, guess his fans are starting to feel safe again

newnamethanks · 16/01/2024 12:44

No voice can be worse to listen to than Trump's own. I have to turn sound off when he speaks, makes me shudder.

God knows.

As an aside. I think he's got new teeth. And is moving to American Tan colour of false tan, I've never seen him look so orange as in Iowa.

What on earth are people on to vote for him again...

Darkandstormynite · 16/01/2024 13:57

Interestingly though, if you drill down into the Iowa results, Trump got just over 50% of the votes from a very conservative Republican base on a very low turnout volume.

Now the turnout can be attributed to the weather, understandably. But, Trump was crowing that 95% of the Republican party was now MAGA. So these results are actually much weaker than they would appear.

Also, 7/10 Hailey voters said they would not support Trump if convicted, but only 4/10 Trump supporters said they wouldn't support Hailey.

I suspect the orange one is more than a little worried behind the scenes.

Lizzieregina · 16/01/2024 14:04

I’ve said all along, if the non MAGA people could consolidate to one opponent for Trump, he’d be toast.

I think Haley will have a shot to beat him in New Hampshire, more so if DeSantis and Ramaswamy get out of the race, but their egos won’t allow that. It’s 2016 all over again. Too many candidates.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/01/2024 14:40

Ramaswamy has dropped out.

Trump has turned up for first day (jury selection) of E Jean Carroll civil damages trial.
Judge already pissed off as T asked for week delay for travelling Tuesday and Wednesday for his MIL funeral on Thursday. (rejected) Then trump scheduled an event on New Hampshire Wednesday evening.
Habba has asked and been denied.

I suspect Trump is setting up Contempt of court with inappropriate testimony and daring Judge to sanction him...
