Yes, the polls one year out mean rather less than nothing; they reflect the views of people who answer their phones to strangers, which is not a typical cohort of the population, and they've been pretty consistently irrelevant all this century.

Ah yes, I remember Leo in the West Wing: 'Put a poll in the field'. In other words, these days, 'ring up a skewed demographic and hope for the best'.

Yes, that's under insurance, isn't it? So his assets would effectively be uninsured? Which would again be a fraud against investors relying on honest valuations.

Property taxes are based on market appraisal (which is why Trump was quite content for Mar a Lago to be valued at $28m not that long ago)

BruceAndNosh · 07/11/2023 00:08

Just how bad Trump performed today is illustrated by his lawyers closing the day discussing with the judge how they can file for a mistrial...

AutumnCrow · 07/11/2023 00:17

Blimey, @BruceAndNosh. What's the maximum that Trump can be fined in this case, do you have any idea?

I think that was the plan all along.

Quoted by CNN
Trump attorney Alina Habba told the judge, “Obviously are going to be moving for a mistrial, that is part of the plan.”

Another one saying the quiet bit out loud, then. All the competent lawyers like to be paid, so they don't want to work for Trump. He stiffed Cohen, and Giuliani, and people noticed.

SequentialAnalyst · 07/11/2023 18:50

Alina is a bit of a looker who met Trump shortly after she joined Bedminster Golf Club and seems to have an eye for the main chance.

Alina’s professional life seems lively, even discounting the Trump connection.

On July 19, 2022, Habba was sued by a former employee Na'Syia Drayton who claimed Habba repeatedly sang inappropriate gangster rap and hip hop music in the office while using the N word, made racist comments, and referred to New York's attorney general Letitia James as '"that Black bitch."[33][34] The lawsuit was settled out of court in September 2022.

BruceAndNosh · 07/11/2023 20:04

Habba's father is a prominent Christo - fascist.

I found this Bannon-ism very typical but still worth paying attention to, from Jonathan Karl's new book:

Karl relates that days before he was indicted in the Daniels case, in which Trump is accused of making illegal payments to an adult movie star to cover up an alleged affair, his former senior adviser in the White House Steve Bannon mused that Trump could turn his legal plight to political advantage. “This week, Trump could lock down the nomination if he played his cards right,” Karl says Bannon told him. “‘They’re crucifying me,’ you know, ‘I’m a martyr.’ All that. You get everybody so riled up that they just say, ‘Fuck it. I hate Trump, but we’ve got to stand up against this.’”

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/nov/07/trump-trial-date-todd-blanche-jonathan-karl-book

How often do we see the play: "Come on everybody, you might not like X, but you have to stand against this injustice."

I mean, obviously this is a rallying cry that can occur naturally sometimes.

But I've spotted it in action a ridiculous amount since Bannon acquired power. It's validating to have him actually admit this is his playbook.

Furious Trump heaped scorn on own lawyer over trial date, book says

‘You are going to cost me the presidency!’ Trump yelled at Todd Blanche after hush-money trial scheduled for primary season

So, do we think Habba is angling to be the next Melania? And BTW, where is Melania? I'm beginning to wonder if she's going to be 'disappeared' like Shelly Miscavige.

She looks his type. Seeing her on CNN, I thought he might well have picked her for her looks (at least partlyGrin). There used to be a book with advice on how to marry a millionaire [sic] back when millions were millionsWink "Look the part. Go to places where millionaires hang out. Take it from there. The end."

Counsel: did you prepare the 2021 financial statement
Trump: ‘I was so busy in the White House, focusing on Russia and China and keeping our country safe’
Counsel: you weren’t president then

Such a blatant lie - how on earth can anyone with brains want this idiot for President again? I don't understand the Trumpers' psyche.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 08/11/2023 10:23

This is a bit of a relief for me, as a fully paid-up feminist from the Sixties. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/11/07/abortion-ohio-kentucky-virginia-elecitons/

Lizzieregina · 08/11/2023 13:55

I haven’t checked this morning, but things were looking very positive last night in Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia.

Andy Beshear reelected as a Governor in Kentucky.

Abortion rights guaranteed in Ohio.

Democrats took the state senate in Virginia and were competitive in the house (that wasn’t decided before bedtime!)

Elvis Presley’s Cousin bringing a strong challenge for Governor of Mississippi.

The young people turned out in droves to vote which did my heart good!!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/11/2023 15:18

There is this saying about "If you're a Republican you can't win a primary without Trump, but you can't win an election with him."

How many of the people he has endorsed have won their elections, and how many of them have lost them? Is it even near a fifty-fifty split, by now?

Lizzieregina · 08/11/2023 15:40

In other good news, many of my “small town America” friends are reporting great results in local elections, school boards, library funding etc. They’re all really pleased this morning.

BruceAndNosh · 08/11/2023 16:48

Ivanka Trump asked to defer testimony because of "hardship" of travelling to New York during the week cos of her school age kids.
But she managed to find time for professional hair and makeup this morning

AcrossthePond55 · 08/11/2023 16:50

@Wallaw

Yes, I was really pleased with the results. Especially the strong 'pro choice' message being sent with the election of people who were very clear on their pro choice stand vs candidates who campaigned on a 'right to life' platform. Not to mention the Ohio 'right to choice' amendment. AND the state of VA now has a Dem majority in both state houses. Take that, Gov Younkin!!

"Business Barbie' lol. I suppose it's too much to hope that she throws her dear ol' dad under the bus. She's absolutely capable of it and Jared's family money means that she won't 'starve' if Doofus cuts her off without a sou. Does she have the steel ovaries?

I'm hoping this means that Dems are starting to wake up to the GOP strategy of stacking low level officials. Even if it's only local Dem Committees who are starting to take counter-action.

Never thought I’d be in agreement with MTG on anything!

Maybe he has redeeming qualities I’m not aware of!

SequentialAnalyst · 08/11/2023 19:42

I was wondering how those elections went, having heard about them on Business Matters in the wee small hours (GMT) 2 days ago. Such brilliant news!

I haven't checked whether Ohio went for legalising dope cannabis though?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/11/2023 20:05

I got the impression somewhere that was the minimum.
