To think we need to ban fireworks from public sale?

I have just read in the newspaper that two boys ages 7 & 9 were playing in a park in Caerphilly. Three teenagers approached the boys and thought it would be funny to throw fireworks at them. One little boy has lost his hand.

I sadly think that banning them from public sale is the only way to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

Yes, definitely. YANBU.

The only way to prevent car accidents is to ban cars

BasiliskStare · 03/10/2023 22:09

@trainboundfornowhere I do think that story is sad I know of no where near me that sells fireworks ( apart from sparklers which I think are not essentially dangerous. ) I didn't know you could actually buy them any longer for private use. ( but then I am obviously naive ) . Many years ago a friend of mine went to a private firework party in someone's back garden and one went off , off tangent , caught on her shirt and she was badly burnt.

AngryBird6122 · 03/10/2023 22:11

@midgemadgemodge cars are a necessity, fireworks aren't. How is that comparable?

Not really the same is it? The value of private cars to society as a whole justifies the accidents that take place.

What value to society does selling fireworks to the public bring that outweighs the potential harms?

XenoBitch · 03/10/2023 22:15

YANBU, I don't really understand why they are still available to sell the the public.
They are explosives, cause a load of litter, and are distressing to many pets and wildlife.

FluffyDiplodocus · 03/10/2023 22:16

You have to pass a test to be able to drive a car though, and cars are a necessity for transport. It’s not really comparable!

Butterfly898 · 03/10/2023 22:17

Totally agree with you. It’s madness. That poor little boy.

wayyour · 03/10/2023 22:20

I agree. They should be banned from sale to the public.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 03/10/2023 22:21

I agree too. Nobody needs to buy fireworks.

midgemadgemodge · 03/10/2023 22:21

Cars are not a necessity really we have just made them so

trainboundfornowhere · 03/10/2023 22:26

In a Scottish city, bonfire night two years ago up to 50 youths all 16 and under thought it would be funny to start throwing fireworks at passing buses and cars as well as members of the public.

It took 6 police vans and officers in riot gear to stop the attack. Cars and buses ended up with broken windows and police officers got hit with bricks. Thankfully on that occasion there were no serious injuries.

You have to have a licence to drive a car, you must wear a seatbelt and you can't drive while using a mobile phone or under the influence of drink or drugs...there are restrictions for safety and reduction of incidents just like banning sale of fireworks to the general public would reduce incidence of harm.

OdeToBarney · 03/10/2023 22:28

Yanbu. It is madness that the general public are allowed to buy explosives with such ease!

midgemadgemodge · 03/10/2023 22:21

They really are a necessity to some.

Fireworks are not. There is a lot of hoops to jump through to be able to drive a car. With fireworks, you just have to be old enough.

MollyMarples · 03/10/2023 22:29

YANBU. Completely ridiculous that we can buy them

Wafflethedoggy · 03/10/2023 22:30

Yanbu. It amazes me the general public can go into a supermarket and buy explosives. Crazy!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 03/10/2023 22:35

We’ve had fireworks going off every night for the past month (very near town center) they are an utter menace. A few people according to farcebook have lost pets through fright.

Professional drone light displays are far superior Imo. Don’t know why anyone would actually want to see a fireworks display anymore.

We don’t ‘need’ fireworks though do we?

That’s a ridiculously stupid comparison to make.

HandbagMarinara · 03/10/2023 22:39

Ban all dogs. Much more dangerous than fireworks.

Ban all cats. Cause much more environmental damage than fireworks.

Ban all alcohol...

ShutTheDoorBabe · 03/10/2023 22:40

Banning things doesn't make problems go away, it just moves then onto something else. What needs to be addressed is the behaviour and the availability of the police to quickly deal with it.

midgemadgemodge · 03/10/2023 22:58

So some deaths are acceptable? Why?

excited18 · 03/10/2023 23:13

Agree, can't believe you can just buy some explosives with your weekly shop and then set them off with no idea what you're doing

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 03/10/2023 23:35

We just need to ban idiots.
