To think we need to ban fireworks from public sale?

I have just read in the newspaper that two boys ages 7 & 9 were playing in a park in Caerphilly. Three teenagers approached the boys and thought it would be funny to throw fireworks at them. One little boy has lost his hand.

I sadly think that banning them from public sale is the only way to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

Some (autistic) people cant go to local display and find crowds overwhelming

That is not really a reason to allow the public to buy explosives.

NotSorryForTheReality · 09/11/2023 21:58

I think they should be banned 100% or at the very least some sort of law that they are allowed for a set amount of time on set dates…

coming form a lady with a dog that has a heart attack after every one, a DH that’s a fire fighter in a rough area and that lives in an area they are put off mid oct to mid nov at any time (sometimes it’s not even dark, sometimes it’s midnight on a Wednesday) and is scunnert with it EVERY SINGLE YEAR 😂 I just want to sit in front of the TV with a dog that’s not clambering all over the top of me and a man that’s not had a nightshift from hell which has left him in a smashing mood 😂

but on a serious note there are serious safety issues with them being so accessible

Northernsouloldies · 10/11/2023 00:35

The tinks that attack emergency services on Halloween /bonfire night would be on the phone if their mums house was on fire or if granny was having a heart attack.

CherryCokeFanatic · 10/11/2023 00:41

The reports I have seen are “allegedly” that a rocket was thrown into the “den” they were playing in.

It seems more likely they somehow accessed fireworks themselves at home or elsewhere, took them to play and had an accident.

If they were from home, awful from the parents to not secure them better.

The only way to prevent car accidents is to ban cars

The same bullshit argument some Americans use for not banning automatic weapons.

Forsakenalmosthuman · 10/11/2023 07:32

Some teenagers stabbed another kid to death near me in October. It's such a common occurrence that it barely made the local news. Should all knives be banned? No. Because most people don't use them in an antisocial way.

I personally hate fireworks and spend much of Diwali, Bonfire Week and Ramadan cursing them. But it's not a good enough reason to ban them. They bring a lot of joy to nitwits, and the vast majority of people aren't using them as weapons. It's like saying "BaN aLL dogs!!111!" because the occasional fuckwit has an uncontrolled XL bully.

User135644 · 10/11/2023 07:34

The public have no business buying or setting off fireworks. Official displays only.

Let's allow people to buy guns and other explosives then.

So it's not compulsory to see fireworks at all! People can wear ear defenders, watch an organised display from far away at the top of a hill, watch them on tv.

There is no good reason for fireworks to be available to the general public. I would support them only being available to events organisers with a licence.

Well knives are kind of vital for, you know, cutting things up. Do you never cook? Banning knives is completely unreasonable. Fireworks on the other hand are not necessary.

Those saying well then you should ban dogs as well…
well maybe getting a dog or fireworks should be a properly restricted thing… if you want to possess something that can kill/maim someone you need to have a licence and you need training.

if you don’t want one of things bad enough to agree to do it safely and minimise risk to others then you shouldn’t be allowed it.

cars sadly are necessary for a lot of people but you must pass two tests to check your safe on the road and can rightly be stopped for breaking the rules and be banned from driving.

lf we can’t ban things all together then we need to think of ways to make things safer for the population regardless of individuals just « wants » rather than needs. only alllowing fireworks sales to people that have done proper training makes a lot of sense and would have spared this poor little boy the trauma and loss of his hand

I have a dog and I completely agree with this.

I would have no issue whatsoever with getting a licence/going through training. Anyone who isnt willing to do that, clearly doesnt really give a toss about their dog/firework in the first place and their motives are suspect

NotSorryForTheReality · 10/11/2023 20:16

@Northernsouloldies 100% they do!

I’m not saying everyone is irresponsible but I do think if they aren’t banned to the general public, there should be (and I know this is easier said than done as the way they are made and sold would need to change) some way of linking everyone who has purchased the fireworks to the firework itself so those who are being irresponsible are held accountable. Along side an additional rule around when they are allowed to be set off e.g, x date to x date within y to a time, with some real repercussions for fireworks made and sold illegitimately or those letting them off outwith set boundaries.

Also to the “let’s ban all cars” etc. I’m pretty sure if my man couldn’t come and help your loved one in an RTC, your granny’s house when it was on fire, the police needed a door put in to help a loved one in a violent attack (yes the police do regularly need assistance in gaining entry) or an ambulance service needs assistance with either getting in or getting someone out of an awkward area for someone you know….you would not have a snarky comment like when they were unable to attend because they were stuck at a job dealing with fireworks dickhead Dave has flung up the close for the sixth time tonight…

You have to pass a test to be able to drive a car though, and cars are a necessity for transport. It’s not really comparable!

If cars were not available for the public to buy, then we’d have public transport that went nearly every people wanted to go. Roads would be less congested so buses would be fast. Narrow streets wouldn’t be blocked by parked cars. Air quality would be better.

notmorezoom · 10/11/2023 20:25

Sale to under 18s is already illegal so banning sale altogether wouldn't have stopped either the shop that sold them to kids, or the idiot adult that gave them to kids. The people who will continue to sell them illegally, will continue to sell to kids......

PomegranateRose · 10/11/2023 20:30

YANBU. I don't think anyone without appropriate pyrotechnic training/licensing should be able to buy them. Absolutely bonkers that explosives can be bought by anyone so easily, especially when they have no common practical use, before flares are brought up (which are an emergency safety related item anyway in any case).

The car/cat/dog comparison someone tried to make is ridiculous as well.

gabsdot45 · 10/11/2023 20:43

You can't buy fireworks in Ireland but people still get them and we have fireworks going off from the start of October until Halloween
Banning the sale won't stop the problem of idiots

GuessItsANameChange · 10/11/2023 20:50

I had some kids shove a lit firework down my top about 10 years ago. It dropped out the bottom and shot off in the other direction, but still.

Kids have easy access to dangerous explosives that that’s not okay.

Thinkbiglittleone · 10/11/2023 21:05

I don't think banning them is the answer. Sadly there will always people who abuse the use of things. It's finding a way of policing it better.

Alcohol for instance - non essential item used for social enjoyment but that causes untold amount of violence and harm to people when it's abused. Millions can use it safely but the ones who can't cause alot of damage.

DanceMumTaxi · 10/11/2023 21:09

I’d ban them too. I went to an organised display, but there was still an idiot there who was holding fireworks and setting them off. It was the sort that sends out individual shots. The lad was holding it pointing outwards and it was really scary. I just tried to keep my kids out of his way.

DanceMumTaxi · 10/11/2023 21:10

It’s also really scary for lots of animals too.

justwantobeamum · 10/11/2023 21:17

100%. Should be available to licence holders only for public displays on 5th nov, 31st dec and weddings and events.

Spirro · 10/11/2023 21:21

Every year there are serious injuries and attacks. I see no good reason for explosives to be available to the public. Restrict them to licence holders only, for organised displays that have to be notified in advance to the council.

Gooseysgirl · 12/11/2023 16:55

YANBU, I'm Irish living in UK. They've been banned in Ireland for donkeys years! I'm completely baffled why they are legal here... the only people who I think should be allowed to use them are trained pyrotechnics.
