To think we need to ban fireworks from public sale?

I have just read in the newspaper that two boys ages 7 & 9 were playing in a park in Caerphilly. Three teenagers approached the boys and thought it would be funny to throw fireworks at them. One little boy has lost his hand.

I sadly think that banning them from public sale is the only way to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

Teens shouldn't have access to them regardless of a ban. That said, I don't think banning is the answer in most cases, as they will still exist on the black market and those who shouldn't have them will get them elsewhere. There are young teens who smoke and drink, after all.

I think the main issue is people failing to parent their children adequately and raising little shits who think it's ok to light fireworks and aim them at other humans and animals. I blame the teens themselves, but also the parents who I'm guessing didn't have the wherewithal to even know where their children were, let alone know their little darlings were terrorising children with explosives.

This is a horrible incident. That poor child.

dawngreen · 29/10/2023 12:20

They should be banned too. We had gang of 9 yr old and older throwing fireworks in the street. Every year they try to throw them inside our supermarket. Last night they were throwing them in the delivery trucks that they were loading for deliveries.

bakewellbride · 29/10/2023 12:21

Yanbu just ban the lot

tpxqi · 29/10/2023 12:59

Here we go. The mandatory seasonal firework threads. Get a grip.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 29/10/2023 13:16

I see no good reason to sell fireworks for private use.

Public events only, with a licence.

They are dangerous, polluting and create a lot of stress for people (and animals).

Don't be so rude and consider if you need to develop some empathy.

No, it's entitled adults who think it's fine to let them off in their gardens for weeks on end. It's not just teens who throw them around - adults are just as capable. Also, why do you think that everything a teenager does is down to their "parenting"? Do you not have free will yourself? If so, why do you think teens don't?

Organised displays on 5th November or the nearest weekend to it. No other time.

If people eg want them for Diwali they can apply for a licence for a public event as well.

daffodilandtulip · 29/10/2023 14:01

I'm still waiting for an operation to fix my ear after someone letting them off in tiny gardens (while I was inside). They've been going off for absolutely weeks now, and until 1am. I'm sick of hearing them.

Why can we just buy explosives at a shop?

Trixiefirecracker · 29/10/2023 17:12

I love fireworks night. I’m not having it banned because some arseholes can’t control themselves. Let’s ban all dangerous things, knives, dogs, erm lighters?! What next. In the hands of dickheads most things are dangerous.

Scattery · 29/10/2023 17:50

Nobody wants to ban fireworks night, @Trixiefirecracker, but some people rightly want more regulation on fireworks because, irresponsibly used, they are dangerous and antisocial. By your logic, let's unban everything including handguns.

PinkRoses1245 · 29/10/2023 17:59

Definitely, totally unnecessary. In London people letting them off all through autumn sometimes at 1am near us. Just go to an organised display

cardibach · 29/10/2023 18:04

Trixiefirecracker · 04/10/2023 08:09

Dogs maim people more than fireworks, let’s ban those too? Let’s ban everything!

The OP didn’t say ban them. The suggestion was controlling sale to qualified people. I actually think dog licences and some training would be a good idea for dog ownership. We already licence driving

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 29/10/2023 18:07

This conversation happens every single year. No nothing is going to change.
It's a pointless conversation

Please read the thread, loads of people want to ban fireworks and get rid of fireworks night. Yes, I was being a bit obtuse saying ban everything but it’s kind of true, where do you stop? Idiotic thing to say unban handguns, that’s a leap that would only happen in Mumsnet. 🙄

YANBU, I don't really understand why they are still available to sell the the public.
They are explosives, cause a load of litter, and are distressing to many pets and wildlife.

^^^ all of that!

trainboundfornowhere · 07/11/2023 21:22

The second incident I mentioned on October 3rd and happened in 2021 happened again on bonfire night. An area of the city locked down by police in riot gear after over 50 youths thought it would be funny to throw fireworks at passing vehicles. Buses were stopped in the area again and innocent people left terrified. Where were the parents when their children were running riot? In 2021 the youngest children involved in throwing fireworks and rocks were around 10 years old and the eldest 16.

I don't think we should, they are really only used widely on bonfire night and New Years Eve. Bonfires are being banned for health and safety reasons and now fireworks are being replaced by pathetic light shows. What is this world coming to?

Wednesdaysotherchild · 07/11/2023 21:58

YANBU - I’d support a ban, they add to air pollution too.

RichPetunia · 07/11/2023 22:23

I would totally support a complete ban.

Anotherparkingthread · 08/11/2023 00:41

These do need to be banned except for events. I don't mind them at the local firework display. I don't mind them at weddings etc.

But realistically they are explosives and should be handled by people trained ans licensed to do so, on licenses premises.

The people who buy them for normal use are always the tackiest twats around, who want to drink to inherbtistion then fall about the garden of their 3 bed mid terrace and piss off all their neighbours with a 3 hour long firework display.
Or worse, chavy kids going to make somebodys life a misery with them. I saw some setting fireworks off on a residential street last week. Letting them off through the letter boxes of random houses.

It needs regulating. Every year people injure themselves, random strangers.

Some (autistic) people cant go to local display and find crowds overwhelming

NotMyCircusAnymore · 08/11/2023 01:05

@midgemadgemodge cars are necessary for many people . Disabled people, those living rurally etc. And people are tested to see if they can get a license to drive them. There's no comparison really

I see that Jersey has a two week period when fireworks can be sold. That makes sense to me.

I wish we could ban garden bonfires too - someone near me had a ridiculous one yesterday. I'd been out for a walk and thought my house was on fire when I came back! But then realised it was a couple of gardens away.
