AIBU to think that the Tories are utterly wicked to drop net zero?

I think this is genuinely wicked but I guess it was inevitable with the easiness of drumming up a culture war over environmental issues to win votes. Environment is the new Brexit.

Fighting climate change is going to cost all of us thousands of pounds. So we won’t do it - to get votes.

Our children will live on an island suffering extremes of heat and fighting off refugees from uninhabitable parts of the world.

But it will save us some cash I guess.

AIBU to think this is wicked?

Sunak planning to drop net zero policies in pre-election challenge to Labour

As someone who works in renewable energy - I'm feeling rather pissed off.

custardlover · 19/09/2023 21:53

It's absolutely batshit

Tregothnanny · 19/09/2023 21:55

I'm also worried it might send our company into chaos. Due to the amount of time and investment we've put into making "net zero" doable ☹️

MotherOfCatBoy · 19/09/2023 21:58

It’s immoral and selling out not only his generation’s children and grandchildren but all of us living right now. Climate change is here now and not to bear responsibility for it and tackle it is cowardly, greedy and wrong.

Kendodd · 19/09/2023 21:59

just like more pollution in Uxbridge, their voters will love it.

Wsmi · 19/09/2023 22:00

UK emits less than 1% of global emissions.

How is it wicked to drop a target that makes no difference at all to the climate.

Parsley1234 · 19/09/2023 22:01

@Wsmi yep

lapsedbookworm · 19/09/2023 22:02

They are just going to slash and burn all.the way to the next election now. They know they've lost it so might as well go full nasty for the rest of their term.

Iloveshoes123 · 19/09/2023 22:02

I'm delighted that they planning to delay the ban on the sale of petrol cars because it is an unrealistic and ridiculous policy. Electric cars are not a sustainable alternative. The problem with the 'climate emergency' is that it is like a religion and you have to agree with net zero and what all the NGOs say. There is no balance in reporting of climate issues.

This!

oh I'm so relieved. But Labour will try it.

crumblingschools · 19/09/2023 22:03

There isn’t the infrastructure in place

Wsmi · 19/09/2023 22:04

Net 0 is nonsense because UK’s emissions make absolutely no difference to global emissions. But the Tories are not dropping it because it’s an irrational pointless target. They are doing it to distract from their other failings and blatant corruption. Such as how they and their cronies have been embezzling public funds in the name of Covid, uncontrolled migration and HS2.

StillWantingADog · 19/09/2023 22:04

It is batshit but won’t mean much in the long term as they’ll all be gone in about a year god willing

FrangipaniBlue · 19/09/2023 22:04

and there we have it - the reason we're being told by the press "look over here at Russell Brand!!"

I bloody knew there was something afoot with the government, said it to DH this morning!!

bellac11 · 19/09/2023 22:06

'fighting off refugees'?

Iloveshoes123 · 19/09/2023 22:07

It's really not batshit or wicked - it's quite logical but as people have mentioned it won't matter because they will lose the next election.

Parsley1234 · 19/09/2023 22:07

@FrangipaniBlue yep

Beenhereforever1978 · 19/09/2023 22:08

@Upsizer how did you think Net Zero was going to work and be implemented?

For anyone paying attention to the news this has been on the cards and talked about for weeks, since the Uxbridge election result.

Switcher · 19/09/2023 22:08

We should focus on carbon capture, helping the biggest polluters learn cleaner ways of living, and investment in climate tech. Net zero is vapourware and is just going to piss our money away with no impact at all.

Wsmi · 19/09/2023 22:09

Net 0 is a corruption gravy train. It’s there so that the government can rip off the taxpayer by handing over public funds to their cronies. Unfortunately for them the gravy train seems to be running out of steam. They literally couldn’t get anyone to bid for the nonsense offshore wind farms at the public auction last week. Which means less opportunity for corruption and for them to line their pockets.

Upsizer · 19/09/2023 22:09

This thread just demonstrates is really. People thinking it’s a conspiracy and the “vote” being 50:50. Jeez. Just the same as Brexit. This planet is fucked.

There could be the infrastructure in place and massive energy companies are planning for exactly this.

Not this bullshit again. We are not responsible for 1% at all. The 5th largest economy on the world can never only be responsible for 1%.

The raw and messy production of most the goods we consume is done abroad. For us. When people complain that China and India are responsible, they are deliberately forgetting that not only are these countries trying to catch up with our standard of living after we’ve already been through centuries of being the biggest polluters since the Industrial Revolution. They are also producing our goods, including all the cheap clothing and iPhones we use.

All of the countries who produce our goods, have less of a throwaway and consumerist culture than us. It is completely disingenuous to claim the UK is responsible for 1%.

This. USA - plastic everywhere. Packaging, millions of free bags per shop. Huge gas guzzling cars. We literally make zero difference and cripple ourselves financially whilst everyone else keeps going.

100% agree - carbon capture is the way forward. In 30 years I think the will be very few electric cars - most cars will have a carbon capture feature or will be run on low carbon fuels.
