Russell Brand - everyone knew

1000 replies

Mooshamoo · 18/09/2023 17:06

I was watching the comedian Katherine Ryan say to Louis theroux that a British comedian is a sexual perpetrator. It is now believed that she was talking about Russell brand. She said on the video "when it eventually comes out about these type of people, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, this unmentionable British personality, it turns out that everyone knew. Everyone knew. ".

I was wondering did anyone on here on mumsnet know anything about Russell brand? A lot of us lived in London when her was living there. And many women on here would have been a similar age to Russell brand . I lived in London for a year and I saw Russell brand out on a night out once. That was the extent of it. I was wondering did anyone on here have any experience with him, or know about a friend/acquaintance that had any experiences with him.

I think Carr prefers a low profile since his tax controversy

Hmm I wonder if he lives in a glass house......

Eh? Plenty of people knew Jimmy Saville was dodgy - in fact Operation Yewtree shows they facilitated him! He also constantly made inappropriate jokes, behaved disgracefully and openly towards women and he openly made misogynistic comennts all the time just like Brand.

That poster is saying Brand’s fans are responsible for these crimes. Not Brand himself^. His fans. so why not attribute that same principle to Saville?

Because you were talking about children - please don’t try to gaslight me by saying that you weren’t.

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 21:56

goldenrachita · 18/09/2023 21:48

FinnRussell, that wasn't my point. My point was that a woman who knew him extremely well at the time and was observing him interact with women did not remotely guess or "know" he was capable of assault. That's my reply to the title of this thread.

Contrasting with Jimmy Saville, half the public back in the 80s "knew" he was seriously suspect. Not one of my parents' friends at the time was remotely surprised....he lived fairly locally and plenty of people would never have let their small children near him.

Interestingly SavilleMs PA said after everything came out, that she didn’t believe he was a sexual predator! She thought all his victims were lying.

Grief - as in the grief of finding out a loved one is a monster - does funny things to people.

Totallyterrific · 18/09/2023 21:50

@MartinChuzzlewit obviously I understand the difference.
My point is that they knew, you knew. They didnt say anything at the time, you didnt.
The only aspect that is different is that you "arent ghoulishly wanting cookies". My point is that not "ghoulishly wanting cookies" doesnt make you somehow better.

I knew because people in the media get to find out about arrests before charges but can’t necessarily report on it.

So I knew with a view to ‘it’s only a matter of time before everyone else finds out’. What should I have done - called the police and said “I understand you’re investigating this - that’s all I have to say”

Im not saying I’m better. I’m saying I think it’s ghoulish and one-up a ship like to excitedly say “I knew all along!”

AuntieStella · 18/09/2023 21:51

I'm assuming that Katie Perry won't make any public comment.

I don't really follow sleb twaddle - did either party give reasons for seeking divorce?

Not that I can recall.

Age 16 legally is not a child. So therefore not a child abuser

Never ever found RB remotely funny- thought He was loopy and acted like a hyperactive kid on telly so couldn't tolerate him in anything.
Always felt his persona on tv was all an act - serial shagger etc etc. He has admitted to all of this over the years- not a crime last time I looked.

Why oh why is dispatches the self proclaimed met police??

They have ruined an innocent man who is that til proven in court .
I think its disgusting this trial by media. Where is the evidence?
Dispatches have destroyed his wife and poor kids for what- tv ratings dont kid yourself its for the public service its about ratings and publicity. They certainly arent altruistic do gooders .
So RB wasnt a nice fella/ was always onit looking for women so flipping what !! i can name a few lads from college like this who then settled down.

Honestly holier than thou pearl clutchers are having a field day. If he sexually assaulted women he needs to rot in jail but this programme is completely ridiculous.
Police first
Then conviction
Then documentary
Not the last one first!!
Jimmy saville preyed on kids - vulnerable kids in hospitals and care homes
I think its vile to compare RB the same as JS . No comparison in the JS levels of evil

How then do you square the assumption (and I don't think anyone questions it!!) that JS was a prolific, evil sex offender - and he was never found guilty in a court of law either???

A child under the age of 18 can consent to sexual activity in England. Argue it all you want. Under 18 = child.

However, if a child under 18 is sexually assaulted or raped, then it becomes a case of BOTH rape and sexual abuse of a minor.

You really need to educate yourself.

Dispatches has not ruined his wife and kids. Russell Brand has done that. If you are going to make weak excuses for him, then you are nearly as bad as he is.

If you know rapists from your college days then you should take that information to the police.

I think you will find Dispatches/The Times/Sunday Times have a plethora of evidence. They have spent years researching this. Of course they aren't altruistic but they will not have left themselves open to legal challenge.

I find this level of ignorance frankly deeply shocking.

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 22:01

I have to say as someone who works in the media I didn’t think it was an Earth shattering piece of investigative journalism. They essentially got some women to speak and a random male comedian no one ever heard of - but nothing in the way of other evidence bar a few out of context text messages.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s NOT easy for a journalist to persuade a victim to speak about their experiences but it was an hour of talking heads and showing old footage. It was good but in my professional opinion, not great. It won’t stick in my mind the way the Weinstein piece did or the various pieces about the Catholic Church

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 22:03

Meowandthen · 18/09/2023 21:53

Are you hard of understanding? Again, you not knowing about something doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

I don’t keep a note of you banal posts but you have made negative and argumentative comments on various posts. I tend to notice difficult people but you aren’t important enough to keep records about.

Well I shall go and weep into my pillow then

Hmm I wonder if he lives in a glass house......

In fairness tax evasion is not on the same level as rape!

He owned it, apologised and he absolutely does not shy away from talking about it and what a tit he was.

Glass houses my arse

Ramalangadingdong · 18/09/2023 22:04

How do we know that comedians have remained silent? Is it likely that some of them spoke to The Times/Dispatches off the record?

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 22:05

Ramalangadingdong · 18/09/2023 21:56

Because you were talking about children - please don’t try to gaslight me by saying that you weren’t.

Ph Lord with the making things up again.

Who is gaslighting you? I WAS talking about children. But it’s @teddyandgypsy tehory not mine that all fans are to blame for Brand. So why not Saville? Genuine question. His fan base for a long tie was mainly children, who the grew into adults and kept being fans. Are they responsible? @teddyandgypsy wont answer this question. Too busy blaming a load of women on MN for the actions of a sex offender they don’t even know

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 22:06

Ramalangadingdong · 18/09/2023 22:00

Not that I can recall.

IIRC conflicting schedules and he didn’t want children.

They were only married for about 5 minutes I think

Ramalangadingdong · 18/09/2023 22:07

We mentioned Jonathan Ross upthread and I was interested to observe that his wife was just 18 when he married her. He was 28. She was probably younger when they met.

Meanwhile, that Welsh saint Huw Edwards continues to hide under the duvet in the Priory while the BBC have him on full salary. As we pay that salary, I would like to know just how long this is going to go on.

It will go on as long as due process takes.

You can't simply up and dismiss someone on the basis of allegations. There has to be fairness, an investigation, representations from him. examination of evidence etc and all of this takes time.

Plus while he is holed up the said Priory, he cannot be forced to take part in any investigatory meetings.

Trust me there are plenty of people in publicly-funded positions who have their salary paid in full for years. Like it or not.

A text message admitting non consensual sex + a substantiated trip to a rape crisis center the following day - how much more context do you need?

Russell Brand is not the Catholic Church, so of course it doesn’t have similar impact. It’s relevant because of his impact on a particular culture and working environment, and the wider acceptance of abusive behaviour from men in other industries (most recently medicine). But there may be no criminal charges and he might just carry on broadcasting conspiracy theories (his mainstream career was over anyway).

My god what is this, literally every one being mentioned as some sort of problem with insinuations of being abusers or something.

This is why so many of us baulked at all the sensationalism of the guessing game of names, names being bandied about (and still are).

So what if she was 18?

Ah well then - in your esteemed professional opinion, I guess Brand will be taking Channel 4 and The Times/Sunday Times to the cleaners?

Seeing as the investigative journalism was "not great" and "nothing in the way of other evidence bar a few out of context text messages"...

Any wonder I despair about the standards of journalism...!

CherryMaDeara · 18/09/2023 22:14

Just heard his live tour has been cancelled.

The shit is definitely hitting the fan for him.

Enthusedeggplant · 18/09/2023 22:15

On Jimmy Carr Katherine Ryan went out of her way to say how helpful towards and supportive of the up and coming female comics he was. I think she said he was one of the most supportive and requested female comics on shows too.

Just heard ‘Alice’s’ audio on Sky News. Does anyone know if this was an actor or her real voice? I know they used an actor’s voice for Alice for Dispatches, but the Sky News bit just said ‘audio’.

MaudGone · 18/09/2023 22:19

Didn't see Sky News. But on the BBC news earlier, they said they used an actor to voice "Alice" on the Woman's Hour interview, parts of which were repeated on the news.

Unfortunately, 16 is old enough for consent even though you're basically still a child.

Depends on whether you are in a position of responsibility over that child. Teachers can get done for shagging sixth formers.

Brands current defence is that he's changed, and that he's always been open about his "colourful past" as I think some of the Simps here put it.

So right now he's in effect using his pliant wifey Laura Gallacher and 2 daughters as his shield. Oh the number of former promiscuous priapic men who come over all remorseful the minute they father daughters.

If it turns out he's still been skanking around after shacking up with her (he's into his eastern mysticism which is a haven for messianic narcissists) all bets are off. She could wreak some serious havoc on him
