Russell Brand - everyone knew

1000 replies

Mooshamoo · 18/09/2023 17:06

I was watching the comedian Katherine Ryan say to Louis theroux that a British comedian is a sexual perpetrator. It is now believed that she was talking about Russell brand. She said on the video "when it eventually comes out about these type of people, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, this unmentionable British personality, it turns out that everyone knew. Everyone knew. ".

I was wondering did anyone on here on mumsnet know anything about Russell brand? A lot of us lived in London when her was living there. And many women on here would have been a similar age to Russell brand . I lived in London for a year and I saw Russell brand out on a night out once. That was the extent of it. I was wondering did anyone on here have any experience with him, or know about a friend/acquaintance that had any experiences with him.

I knew in the sense that I have always thought he was a revolting, creepy misogynist and these allegations don’t surprise me at all. But I didn’t KNOW.

Merrymouse · 18/09/2023 19:44
  1. ‘not as bad as Savile’ is obviously not relevant to anything.
  2. Savile’s name keeps coming up because Brand joked about pimping out his assistant to Savile on national radio. Perhaps he should have just skipped the sleazey exploitative ‘banter’.

He shoved his penis down her throat. He spat in her mouth. He raped her.

Is that not fucking abuse to you? We aren’t talking about any potential consensual sex, we are talking about the accusations she has made of rape. Those are legally child abuse.

I have not suggested that ANY sex with a 16 year old is child abuse. I’m talking about the acts of rape she has accused him of are child abuse.

This! Am I wrong in thinking this is rape? So many people today here minimising it all. It's rape!

Read my previous comment about having a relationship with a much older man at the age of 16. I was not a child, I was completely infatuated with this older man and I went along with everything. Was I coerced? No, was I seduced, absolutely! Was it child abuse? Absolutely not! Was it questionable on his behalf? Possibly,

Edited

You are not this woman.

She has said she felt like a child and that she was groomed.

You don’t get to speak for her.

bellac11 · 18/09/2023 19:36

I didnt say it wouldnt be rape. But when we are informed of someones criminal history, we would be told for example, rape of a 13/14/15 year old, he is a child sex offender

If the rape was of a 16 year old, he wouldnt be named as a child sex offender

Someone who rapes a 16 year old is a child sex offender. Any sexual offence committed against a child makes them a child sex offender, regardless of the name of the offence that they are charged with.

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 19:46

I had a relationship at 16 with a 24yo. I don’t feel abused or coerced though I do wonder what the fuck HE was thinking.

But I am not Alice. My experience has no bearing at all on hers.

Merrymouse · 18/09/2023 19:48

I cannot see why going to the press makes it better.

They didn’t ‘go to the press’. Investigative reporters found the women and they agreed to tell their stories, partly because other women were also talking. The stories they used were extensively corroborated. It’s possible that there will still be criminal investigations.

I'm not speaking for her, I am recounting my own experience. at the same age, with somebody who was not a celebrity!

We could be friends!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 18/09/2023 19:53

A child is someone under 18. Sex is legal from 16 with their consent. She didn't consent to some of what he did to her. So he abused a child.

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2023 19:53

@CherryMaDeara Not victim blaming. Not sure how you reached that verdict. I thought he was a sleaze but clearly others didn’t. If they were willing sex partners, and some were, they aren’t victims. Some women might actually have liked his approach!

ToWhitToWhoo · 18/09/2023 19:54

I had no inside knowledge; but just from his known behaviour and the things that he himself wrote in his book, he came across as a dodgy type, though we may not have known just how dodgy.

You are speaking for her, victim blaming and minimising. Your comment below was awful.

This is a complete non-event, despite the misguided 16 year old, who apparently visited him on more than one occasion. This is hardly Saville territory, but he is absolutely milking it. Wise up folks!

Ilmecourtsurleharicot · 18/09/2023 19:57

So horrible. I thought he was all ‘knowing’ about sex and ironically taking the piss out of creepy men like savile ( before his crimes came out) now turns out in plain sight was exactly it. I believe those women.

You said “he did a “Lock up your daughters” tour! What did anyone think he was about?”

Which implies that it was the girls/women’s fault for being around him.

That seemed to be to be victim blaming.

Tapasita · 18/09/2023 20:00

I never understood why any woman would want to have sex with Russell Brand. He’s horrid. He always gave me the ick. Those mad old mince pies of his, the open shirt, the frenzied, fanatical speeches like he believed himself to be the Second Coming. And the rabid shagging.

Yuk

Yeah, no, I'm really not.

AlwaysGinPlease · 18/09/2023 20:01

Those attempting to defend him must have very low standards and poor relationships. How sad.

I agree. I'm really sad that this has boosted his profile. He's an absolute tosser.

ChocBanana · 18/09/2023 20:03

I worked in the media for a few years when I was young and thought it was a good idea.
A friend of mine told me ten years ago that he was known as a creep and the general consensus was not to put yourself in a position where you might be seen as fair game.
She also told me about Rolf Harris and a few others.
According to her, there is another prime time star who they are just in the process of collating the evidence before exposing them, but they don’t drop these things too closely together or they get lost in the melee.
In response to “why didn’t they say something before”, all I will say is a former colleague of mine was jailed for a crime (non sexual) he committed in plain sight. It was first reported years before and the victim was dismissed as being “a nutter” (in the words of a former manager of mine). It was only when a new boss took over it got rereported and taken seriously.

I can fully understand someone being utterly dismissive of a claim about someone as famous as RB. And that applies to the police as well.

I always thought he looked smelly. Or like he had crabs. He always had a ‘riddled’ look about him. Grim.

Do you think there’s a conversation to be had about the fact he got away with so much, or escaped scrutiny, because he’s good looking (If scruffy drug addict is your thing)?

Don’t worry about him. He’ll be jailed within 2 years and finished.

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 20:05

Sadly I think those hoping for a conviction will be sorely disappointed.

Any criminal defence team worth their salt will fight to the bitter end to say it’s trial by media (a very valid reason for fighting to drop charges). And they will probably win.

3luckystars · 18/09/2023 20:06

Well I didn’t know because I never saw or met the man, and never will so I definitely did not know.

Maybe they should bring out a handbook about what to do when some VIP is acting above the law.

MrsH101 · 18/09/2023 20:06

Id definitely read about Brand on here and on twitter, particularly after Ryan's interview with Theroux. What's just as worrying, is the list of other high profile celebrities that remain 'untouchable' and can't be named and yet 'everyone knows'. Perhaps the stories are lies. Perhaps they're under quiet investigation like Brand was. Personally, I think those 'in the know' and with evidence need to be supported to speak to the police, or else we'll be drip fed these revelations for years to come.
