Russell Brand - everyone knew

1000 replies

Mooshamoo · 18/09/2023 17:06

I was watching the comedian Katherine Ryan say to Louis theroux that a British comedian is a sexual perpetrator. It is now believed that she was talking about Russell brand. She said on the video "when it eventually comes out about these type of people, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, this unmentionable British personality, it turns out that everyone knew. Everyone knew. ".

I was wondering did anyone on here on mumsnet know anything about Russell brand? A lot of us lived in London when her was living there. And many women on here would have been a similar age to Russell brand . I lived in London for a year and I saw Russell brand out on a night out once. That was the extent of it. I was wondering did anyone on here have any experience with him, or know about a friend/acquaintance that had any experiences with him.

@CherryMaDeara Women might have a choice to be around him or not. Some might actually have liked him and even married him! It was pretty obvious he was a sex mad sleeze snd advertised it with his tour name.

For women who had to work with him, that’s different. I would also ask why it’s taken so long? When was Me Too? Apart from feeling foolish, some of them haven’t got anything to lose.

Id definitely read about Brand on here and on twitter, particularly after Ryan's interview with Theroux. What's just as worrying, is the list of other high profile celebrities that remain 'untouchable' and can't be named and yet 'everyone knows'. Perhaps the stories are lies. Perhaps they're under quiet investigation like Brand was. Personally, I think those 'in the know' and with evidence need to be supported to speak to the police, or else we'll be drip fed these revelations for years to come.

Agree. And why did people cover up for him? Was he really drawing in such huge viewing numbers that everyone had to bow down to him? I don’t understand in this situation. I know Saville and Epstein are different in that sense because of their connection and power, but Russell Brand? Why did he weird so much power? He must have been able to attract viewers and make money, but even when he was ‘big time’ he didn’t feel THAT big.

@CherryMaDeara Not victim blaming. Not sure how you reached that verdict. I thought he was a sleaze but clearly others didn’t. If they were willing sex partners, and some were, they aren’t victims. Some women might actually have liked his approach!

That is so disgusting. Kids may like an 'approach' bc they're kids. They don't understand. Doesn't make him any better. It's still skin crawlingling rotten that older men need to prey upon 16 yos.

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2023 20:11

It might also be worth discussing why some women were attracted to him. It’s no good pretending they weren’t. They were.

Fizbosshoes · 18/09/2023 20:11

He was sending cars from the BBC round to school to pick her up to take him to her house to abuse her.

....which suggests that various people at the BBC knew...

Power

Status

Sex

They could tell their mates they shagged a celeb

Low self esteem

All of the above

I was surprised when a Hollyoaks actor - let’s call him Larry Goosey - came to our local club when I was a student. My friend who had a long term BF I thought she adored took off and shagged him after he said about 4 words to her. Quick shag then kicked out hotel, no number or ‘how are you’. She would never have done that with a normal local lad. It’s the star Sometimes power coupled with being a bit of a bad taste plonker.

I never understood why any woman would want to have sex with Russell Brand. He’s horrid. He always gave me the ick. Those mad old mince pies of his, the open shirt, the frenzied, fanatical speeches like he believed himself to be the Second Coming. And the rabid shagging.

Yuk

And yet some women do 😳

I had no idea his wife was the sister of Kirsty Gallacher. She was a bit of an idol of mine back in the day. A credible sports presenter, intelligent and funny.

Obvs her sister was happy to marry and have kids with him.

ChocBanana · 18/09/2023 20:17

As with any kind of investigation, unless you are insane or work for The Sun, you don’t reveal your findings unless you can 100% back them up.
There will be situations where it’s impossible to prove without an element of doubt.
There will be others where it’s a grey area.
Very, very few journalists would name and shame without enough evidence. But the police don’t seem to work like that.

ehupo7 · 18/09/2023 18:16

I don’t think that’s correct. 16 is the age of consent, and there’s nothing illegal about a 31 yo sleeping with a 16 yo, unless they are a teacher or care worker or in some other direct position of responsibility or authority.

That’s not to say it’s not sleazy and gross as fuck or that it shouldn’t be questioned. But it’s not ‘child abuse’ by any legal definition.

It's all very complex. Consent is age 16. What age does child abuse run to? And can a child be regarded as 'groomed' if they are over 16 but still under 18?

Yes as if the allegations werent bad enough, its now turned into a competition to say who was disgusted by him the most, dirty, smelly, unwashed, disgusting, repelled etc etc

He wasnt untypical of the usual young man around the 2000s, the fashion, the hair, the look and lots of women like that and lots of women found and find him attractive, charasmatic and wanted to be with him.

His misogyny and barely concealed violence towards women have somehow been cloaked in being 'cool.' And people bought it. Read Alison Boshoff's description of her encounter with him. He is a really really nasty piece of work and all those of you have supported and encouraged him over the years of his fame are responsible for his actions.

Because somehow he made people feel they were being cool if they supported him. Its the sheeple principle again. Shame on them all. It has been obvious from day one that he was scum.

When if comes to reasons generally for people being attracted to badly behaved individuals there is grooming, of course. And holding power over people if they worked in the same industry. Coercion is another, and possibly worse. But undoubtedly there is also the 'What attracted you to this famous millionaire' aspect.

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 20:22

What do you guys saying it's not child abuse think happens at 12.00.01 on your 16th birthday to make you not a child?

The thing is, you have to draw the line somewhere.

So legally they are above the age of consent on 12.01am on their 16th birthday.

Morally is another question but the law has to be very specific otherwise it doesn’t work

@teddyandgypsy by your logo , children who appeared on Jim’s Fix It enabled his abuse? Right?

@TizerorFizz I think he had charisma and sex appeal, he could turn on the charm and it was probably attractive in short doses. Plus having the “bad boy” can seem appealing.

In reality, he was a drugged up sex addict.

newnamethanks · 18/09/2023 20:24

Apologists. Prince Andrew "everyone knew/knows*. I've not yet seen him in a courtroom nor do I expect to. RB is notoriously litigious, I refer everyone to the injunction he and Jemina Khan served on the masseuse whom Ms Khan bought for RB 'as a present'. Masseuse didn't like the proposition when she arrived. Not permitted to tell us why. So yes, tv and papers, expose him. If he doesn't like it and his feeling are hurt he can sue them. Or write a booky wooky about it.

Wherly · 18/09/2023 20:25

The internet has been saying it for years. In my experience online persistent, consistant rumours tend to be true.

There are 3 other British ones who still haven't had a reckoning but you persistently see named online, I suppose time will tell.

You are wrong - legally she was the age of consent. So she was not a child in the eyes of the law.I’m not trying to compete FFS but there absolutely is a difference between people like me who were six and people above the age of fucking consent. I’m not saying it’s ok I’m saying it was child abuse.

You don't get to decide that. The law is pretty clear.

Charisma and sex appeal? Really? I suppose if Dirty, stringy and sleazy turns you on.

Majesticalling · 18/09/2023 20:27

I saw him dressed as Osama Bin Laden going through the turnstiles at Liverpool Street tube station the day after 9/11 (or there abouts). He made eye contact gauging reactions.

Seriously fucked behaviour.

And it’s within the law it is still child abuse until they’re 18 if it was not consenting. We aren’t talking about consensual sex.
