Racist?

candlelighter · 10/09/2023 00:29

I was a member of a large facebook group. Think about 500k members.

One poster (white) put up a selfie of a well known black DJ with a "guess who i bumped into "

Several messages made references to other black people eg Linford Christie, Frank bruno and other black people with laughing emojis.

I never post on these FB groups but did post I thought some of the posts seemed racist and i didnt think the vibe belonged on the music FB page.

I have now been blocked from the group (after a pile in by others)

Aibu to think this was racist?

@Coralie1 I don’t need your recommendations about my online posting, thanks all the same. 🤫

To the poster who is shaping her thinking based on what BLM has said - BLM is a political organisation with wide spanning agenda that most recently included the leadership funnelling out millions for personal extravagances. Awfully quiet since then.

People who do give a shit should boycott them both, in that case.

Never forget the Mail was the paper that supported the Nazis.

Agreed. I deactivated FB in 2011 and don’t read the Mail. It’s less boycotting though and more just a lack of interest.

Give over. #BLM was a cry from the black community after the death of George Floyd.

Lmao, “anti-racists”. This white hero trope is really tiresome.

If you are such a brave warrior go and eradicate actual modern day slavery in Africa and the Middle East.

I’m not white. What a racist assumption.

Why would I go to the ME when the UK is chock full of racists to eradicate.

HoneyPotts · 10/09/2023 11:10

They are racist. You are better off not being part of the group.

PollyIndia · 10/09/2023 11:26

Yep, racist. Just like the girl who came up to me and said my boyfriend had been trying to touch people up at this festival we were at. Apparently a different black guy but he was also wearing a white t shirt so hey, it’s an understandable mistake - literally what her friend said to me when I told her she was racist and to get out of my face. And yes, everyone should call out racism and racist micro aggressions. So no, YADNBU op, good for you.

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 11:28

Interesting choice of words, you want to eradicate racists, not racism? Without independent courts presumably, just on feelings, put people to the wall and shoot?
How very 2023 progressive.

fairyfluf · 10/09/2023 11:37

Don't worry about it - you're best off out the group

Surely when you eradicate racism you eradicate racists? So same thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 11:50

Not the same thing. Eradicating racism is getting to the point where the notion within society that X or Y populations are inferior because of superficial body markers, and are treated differently because of it. So it includes work on laws, policy, and to some degree, just time. Essentially what happened in the 60s and onward.
I think the world was in a good place wrt race relations in the late 90s-early 00s. Then it was all undone by the very rich and very powerful. Remember when Occupy Wall Street was growing and was suddenly squashed? The rich can’t have a class division! The 2012-onward escalating race tensions are artificial and a distraction. It’s not the black/white that’s the enemy, and anyone who falls for it is an idiot.

10HailMarys · 10/09/2023 11:52

Definitely racist.

OneTC · 10/09/2023 12:00

It follows a pretty old meme format that is definitely intended to poke fun at ignorant people. Like much of that type of humour though there will be equal numbers laughing cos lol @ ignorance and numbers laughing cos lol @ racism.

@fairyfluf you are right. I am glad

Why is it racist ? It could have been the same with a white person and everyone guessing who it is?

I'm dreadful at recognising people.

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 09:07

I don’t know who that is, not being British a lot of your cultural references go right above my head.

I’m saying I’m fed up of white defenders taking offence on minorities’ behalf. That is racist - to view minorities as needing white protectors.

If you think it’s okay to exclude black people from jokes that you wouldn’t think twice about with white people, I’ve got news for you. The racist isn’t who you think it is.

I'm mixed race not a white defender and it's racist you ignoramus.

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 17:40

Name calling always wins arguments, you’ve convinced me internet memes and humour are racist. 😑

WimpoleHat · 10/09/2023 17:40

it’s the emojis. If I put up a picture of myself with an older woman and said “guess who?” and somebody guessed Judi Dench when it was Maggie Smith, that wouldn’t be funny. And someone wouldn’t randomly guess “Theresa May”. There is the very obvious “they all look the same” trope at play here (as others have already pointed out).

BackAgainstWall · 10/09/2023 00:56

YABU
It’s not at all racist.
OTT sensitivity in the extreme.
Turn it around and replace the black person with a white person and you’ll see how ridiculous your assumption is.

Of course it's racist! Responding to a random picture of a black man with a question asking members to guess who it was, by listing a load of other black people?! This implies that they all look the same! If you can’t see that then says quite a bit about you, tbh

WorriedMumofTeen16 · 10/09/2023 20:50

I'm an admin of a fb group with about 15k members and about the same again with visitors. I removed a similar comment a few weeks ago that insinuated all black people looked the same. (Football grpup for refernce) I told the commenter who had also attacked admin on the same comment, that we didn't welcome racist comments nor comments attacking admin. I was then reported to fb for doing so. The outcome was that I was banned for 7 days for shaming the commenter. Go figure
