Racist?

I was a member of a large facebook group. Think about 500k members.

One poster (white) put up a selfie of a well known black DJ with a "guess who i bumped into "

Several messages made references to other black people eg Linford Christie, Frank bruno and other black people with laughing emojis.

I never post on these FB groups but did post I thought some of the posts seemed racist and i didnt think the vibe belonged on the music FB page.

I have now been blocked from the group (after a pile in by others)

Aibu to think this was racist?

I think so, yes. Why have you been blocked? For voicing your opinion on the racist comments?

EmmaEmerald · 10/09/2023 00:32

Definitely racist

Theimpossiblegirl · 10/09/2023 00:34

They're basically saying all black people look the same so yeah, racist.

Coralie1 · 10/09/2023 00:34

Yes, that is racist

RobertaFirmino · 10/09/2023 00:36

Yes, of course it's racist. Implying all black people look the same. Would someone posting a selfie with Sasha get a load of replies naming literally any other white guy?

Sometimeswinning · 10/09/2023 00:36

Out of 500k not one person had your back? Hmmm!!

Anewnamea · 10/09/2023 00:36

yes, juvenile and racist. The defensiveness and collective backlash when you called them out is the MO for groups of racists.

You’re well out of such a group so it’s their loss.

Well done for speaking up.

BackToOklahoma · 10/09/2023 00:37

Yep, disgusting.

FB don’t seem to deal with racist posts. I reported something about a week ago, it’s still there. The racists are all over it, liking it, sharing it, posting laughing emojis and loving the fact they’re getting away with it.

SadSandwich · 10/09/2023 00:40

Well done - it was defo racist

candlelighter · 10/09/2023 00:42

@Acuppaisbetterthanprosecco yes seems so. I pointed out it seemed racist to comment on a black guy looking the same as eachother. I seem to remember linford christie was the butt of lots of racist jokes in the 80's as was frank bruno. The fact they were mentioned seemed a bit nasty.

The group is probably mainly white people
I would say - it an appreciation of early dance music group.

I was blocked within minutes but still had time to see 6 or 7 comments with laughing emojis and being very defensive. One black girl liked my post and that was it.

They don't care. I reported a racist post and they couldn't care less.

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 10/09/2023 00:55

Isn't it utterly depressing? I used to call out so much nonsense like that but feel like it's a losing battle. FB seems to be full of very ignorant losers, with the rest of us agog at their uneducated bs posts.

BackAgainstWall · 10/09/2023 00:56

YABU
It’s not at all racist.
OTT sensitivity in the extreme.
Turn it around and replace the black person with a white person and you’ll see how ridiculous your assumption is.

candlelighter · 10/09/2023 00:58

It is disappointing as one thing i loved about the dance scene in the 90's (hence joining FB group) that it was meant to be all about a community coming together to enjoy the music . But maybe it wasn't really - it really opened my eyes today

OP posts:
candlelighter · 10/09/2023 01:01

@BackAgainstWall but isn't that the whole point?! It is racist because it is about a black person. Racism is against blacks in the overwhelming majority of occassions not against whites. The old racist adage that blacks look the same isn't used on whites

There's no excuse any more for this kind of ignorance. Appalling.

StarBloo · 10/09/2023 01:27

This is so similar to a post I seen recently where someone posted with a local celebrity who is bald (and white). The comments were "say hi to right said Fred", "oh where did you meet grant Mitchell" and so on.

JudgeRudy · 10/09/2023 01:33

I'm not sure it's racist, as in a bad way. Surely the 'dig' is at the people who think all black people look the same rather than black men themselves. Trevor McD looks nothing like Linford C so it's just emphasising what poor taste it is by using exaggerated examples. Probably mentioned Obama, Lenny Henry and Nelson Mandela too.

Stop reaching. It's racist.

Coralie1 · 10/09/2023 01:38

It's almost comical the way people tie themselves in absolute knots to try and explain away an explicit example of casual racism.

I'm not sure it's racist, as in a bad way

So there's racism in a good way? I really hope you're not an actual judge @JudgeRudy

BackToOklahoma · 10/09/2023 01:39

And so the denial and minimising begins from the racist apologists. Didn’t take long. 🙄

Talltall · 10/09/2023 05:54

@candlelighter

it’s racist
report it to meta

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 06:01

Well, this is a common occurrence in other fan groups, e.g. a selfie with an actor from Star Trek, and all the comments “guess” actors from Star Wars.

It’s called humour.
