Racist?

candlelighter · 10/09/2023 00:29

I was a member of a large facebook group. Think about 500k members.

One poster (white) put up a selfie of a well known black DJ with a "guess who i bumped into "

Several messages made references to other black people eg Linford Christie, Frank bruno and other black people with laughing emojis.

I never post on these FB groups but did post I thought some of the posts seemed racist and i didnt think the vibe belonged on the music FB page.

I have now been blocked from the group (after a pile in by others)

Aibu to think this was racist?

OP posts:

Well, this is a common occurrence in other fan groups, e.g. a selfie with an actor from Star Trek, and all the comments “guess” actors from Star Wars.

It’s called humour.

So why did they goes other black people who looked nothing like the DJ, rather than other DJs?

Reading the OP at first I thought people genuinely didn't recognise the DJ, which would have been fair enough. But no, they did, they just chose to laugh at "haha, Black" instead.

It’s not at all racist.
OTT sensitivity in the extreme.
Turn it around and replace the black person with a white person and you’ll see how ridiculous your assumption is.

Oh come on now.
Of course what the op described is racist 🤦🏻‍♀️.

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 08:02

@ColleenDonaghy well the comments only “work” if you match the sex and race of the actors/musicians, so that it looks like genuine passable ignorance.

I’m actually explaining the mechanics of humour 🤭

Coralie1 · 10/09/2023 09:00

@7Worfs Did you go to the Bernard Manning School of Comedy?

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 09:07

I don’t know who that is, not being British a lot of your cultural references go right above my head.

I’m saying I’m fed up of white defenders taking offence on minorities’ behalf. That is racist - to view minorities as needing white protectors.

If you think it’s okay to exclude black people from jokes that you wouldn’t think twice about with white people, I’ve got news for you. The racist isn’t who you think it is.

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 10/09/2023 09:09

"They all look the same to me" is what's being said here. Racist.

araiwa · 10/09/2023 09:11

It's people taking the piss ffs

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 09:14

@OnAFrolicOfMyOwn speaks volumes about how some think of that is your first thought.

It’s jokes about not recognising someone famous - either because one is joking about own ignorance, or poking fun at a very famous person that they aren’t really that famous.

My God this place sometimes.

This is so similar to a post I seen recently where someone posted with a local celebrity who is bald (and white). The comments were "say hi to right said Fred", "oh where did you meet grant Mitchell" and so on.

The point being that there is a strong physical link between right said fred and grant mitchell, baldness. Not saying it isn't a bit rude. But Linford Christie and Frank Bruno do not look alike at all. They never did. The point being that it's hilariously funny to say black people look the same. It's very ignorant and retrogressive and people should really be past all this crap by now. How disappointing. Well done OP for calling it out.

Pippylongstock · 10/09/2023 09:15

Obviously racist and the comments on this thread are showing how far we still have to go.

I’m interested in this point. My feelings from the BLM is that actually it isn’t enough to not be racist, white people need to step up and call out racism where they see it. Our silence is racist. Therefore I don’t agree with you on this point.

CherryMaDeara · 10/09/2023 09:17

Some people do think like that, unfortunately. I have heard that kind of thing said explicitly.

White people being anti-racist is not racist.

Shit attempt at gaslighting.

neverbeenskiing · 10/09/2023 09:22

YANBU. The mental gymnastics some posters on this thread are doing to justify casual racism is embarrassing, but not surprising.

7Worfs · 10/09/2023 09:27

Lmao, “anti-racists”. This white hero trope is really tiresome.

If you are such a brave warrior go and eradicate actual modern day slavery in Africa and the Middle East.

Yes it's the fact that they are just naming other black people that makes it racist in an "they all look the same" way. If they'd names other black male DJs, then it would be in the same vein as the Star Trek example. Actually if they'd named just random DJs of any sex and race that could have been ok too, as in "he's not as famous as you think, we have no idea, which DJ he is"

towriteyoumustlive · 10/09/2023 09:34

I don't get it.

Are you saying they were deliberately guessing the wrong person?

I hate "guess who I bumped into??" posts on Facebook as I am hopeless at guessing names out of context!

A friend of mine posted a photo of her with Lionel Blair years ago and I thought it was Tom Jones 🤦🏼‍♀️

Have a read of "White Fragility" by Robin Diangelo, and educate yourself.

Have I misunderstood the call from the BLM movement to call out racism? If I see comments online calling black people the n word should I just ignore that too?

It's a bit confusing. Call out racism and you get accused of having a white saviour complex. Don't call it out and you're not an ally.

I guess people should just do what they think is right. People will always find something to criticise.

Really?
You regularly see SM posts that insinuate all white people look the same?
You are absolutely party of the problem. Educate yourself on micro aggressions, please.

@7Worfs PP's haven't even disclosed their ethnicity, yet you seem to have some kind of magical insight? Maybe sit this one out, apologism for racism is ugly and you sound confused to boot.

LakieLady · 10/09/2023 09:38

I'm not sure it's racist, as in a bad way.

That makes it sound as though there's a good way to be racist, @JudgeRudy .

People who do give a shit should boycott them both, in that case.

Never forget the Mail was the paper that supported the Nazis.
