Breakfast at Tiffany's- not a love story

I should start by saying I'm a big fan but isn't it kind of fucked up? The kind of film which people rave about and you don't know if they've actually seen it or remember it, or have considered it by today's standards.
They're kind of both prostitutes.
I love Holly Golightly but she must be maddening to live with, or next door to!
Her and Fred would never work, what would they do? Get jobs? Who would hire the work shy pair?
Much prefer the grittier novela.

Well of course it isn't. Hardly a new and doriginal interpretation...

Longagonow96 · 02/09/2023 00:08

original

Gahhhhereheisagain · 02/09/2023 00:10

@Longagonow96 I didn't say it was groundbreaking cultural theory. It's just there's very little in the way of articles which see it through modern eyes.

OP posts:
JaiynDough · 02/09/2023 00:21

Its not a modern film though.

Gahhhhereheisagain · 02/09/2023 00:26

@JaiynDough that's what I'm saying, I wanted to read modern opinions about it. Would people show this film to their daughters?

Show it to my daughters? It’s like a religion in our house, they’re adults now and they’ve watched it zillions of times since they were about six . I insisted.

Yes. It's a classic. My dd has zero interest in my love of old films though. But I'd love to sit and watch it with her.

I'd suggest to you not to watch it again maybe. Watch your gritty stuff. Problem solved! FYI. You're not a fan!

WeetabixTowels · 02/09/2023 03:26

This film is so utterly, utterly terrible (and racist) that when I watched it maybe 15 years ago I was genuinely angry for a day after that I’d wasted my time. Awful, insipid pile of total shite

This is my take on it too

Sueveneers · 02/09/2023 11:07

I found it to be dreary and boring. I'll never understand the fuss over it. It was like watching paint dry. Most fucking boring movie I have ever seen, and that's the truth.

Skybluecoat · 02/09/2023 11:10

It’s a shit film. Audrey Hepburn was dreadful casting. They wanted Marilyn Monroe to play the overtly sexy Holly, but couldn’t get her.

George Peppards character is gay in the book. I guess Hollywood couldn’t deal with that along with Holly being a prostitute.

Not my cup of tea at all.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 02/09/2023 11:11

It's not supposed to be a love story, is it?

Of course. It's one of my favourites.

littleripper · 02/09/2023 11:15

It's a truly shit film, the racism was recognised at the time and it is not true to the much much better book.

AnnaMagnani · 02/09/2023 11:16

I also didn't like it, found Holly incredibly irritating and the film boring except for the song.

Don't get me started on Gigi though.

JaiynDough · 02/09/2023 11:20

Don't watch the world of susie wong then, whatever you do.

thatone · 02/09/2023 11:23

YANBU - I've tried to watch it several times but can never get through the whole thing - the plot seems pointless to me.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 02/09/2023 11:26

Agree with other posters, it's over-rated and dull, and it drags.

Also, whilst Audrey Hepburn is pretty, and nice to look at, her voice is really irritating. Another thing that puts me right off the film. DH thought the same. Nice looking, but awful, annoying voice.

WhenLifeGivesYouLimes · 02/09/2023 11:34

I sort of like it - I think the compromises between the book and what Hollywood wanted and the fact that there's a public impression of it purely based on the poster and clips of Audrey singing Moon River makes it interesting.

But it's not the film that people think it is, and I need to cover my eyes and ears when Mickey Rooney comes on. Maybe in the future it'll only be viewable either with huge WARNINGS where you have to click a box to say you're watching it for historical interest only, or in an AI adjusted version with him surgically removed. His role is completely indefensible.

DonnaBanana · 02/09/2023 11:40

I think I remember the film. And as I recall I think I kinda liked it.

WhenLifeGivesYouLimes · 02/09/2023 11:41

A quick google suggests that Paramount do now have a Rooney-free cut of the film available for broadcast, and it was shown on Channel 5 last year.

PuppyMonkey · 02/09/2023 11:47

I love this film and have watched it several times with my DD.Blush

Mickey Rooney is a terrible bit I agree but it was a different time.

The two leads are both fucked up but they do fall in love so I would say that’s a love story. Never read the book so don’t know what they changed TBF.

I hear You

I think the exact same thing re the actress who plays Carla in Corrie ... and the one who played Sinead..
Beautiful to look at..... but then they speak.

Vermin · 02/09/2023 12:32

Read the novella on which the film is based. It’s much more obvious/ clear in that.
