Breakfast at Tiffany's- not a love story

I should start by saying I'm a big fan but isn't it kind of fucked up? The kind of film which people rave about and you don't know if they've actually seen it or remember it, or have considered it by today's standards.
They're kind of both prostitutes.
I love Holly Golightly but she must be maddening to live with, or next door to!
Her and Fred would never work, what would they do? Get jobs? Who would hire the work shy pair?
Much prefer the grittier novela.

Hi everyone I'm after a bit of perspective, I've never ordered a butchers Christmas meat hamper before but saw this one and really liked the look of it however I feel like it's quite expensive so wondered if any of you who have ordered them in the past could please tell me what would you expect to pay for the following hamper?

2Kg boneless Turkey joint
1Kg boneless topside beef joint
1kg boneless maple bacon joint
16 pork and apple chipolatas
454g of sausage and cranberry stuffing stick
454g of unsmoked streaky bacon

Thank you in advance to anyone who reads and replies

It's a misogynist, racist male fantasy - the gorgeous, damaged, fragile yet spirited prostitute who needs rescuing. Same as Pretty Woman, Moulin Rouge and god knows how many other films with the same tropes.

I never understand why women like these films.

Not to mention the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl subgenre…

I caught a bit of the Mr-Yunioshi-free cut of the film a few years ago, and had this weird sensation of something missing without realising until later it was a recut. The novella is very different, and the prose is lovely, but it’s the loosest of loose adaptations.

@Lovebeingamummy2, you've posted on a thread about a film. You need to navigate to the Christmas section and start a thread over there.

This is a thread about Breakfast At Tiffany’s!

Though Meat Hamper At Tiffany’s would be a nice change.

Agree with other posters, it's over-rated and dull, and it drags.

Also, whilst Audrey Hepburn is pretty, and nice to look at, her voice is really irritating. Another thing that puts me right off the film. DH thought the same. Nice looking, but awful, annoying voice.

I adore Audrey Hepburn. She is one of the most beautiful women who ever lived, in my view, and I would watch her in anything. I love her speaking voice. She is excellent in The Nun's Story, which is very different indeed from BaT. It's a pity she wasn't given more really good parts.

I hear You

I think the exact same thing re the actress who plays Carla in Corrie ... and the one who played Sinead..
Beautiful to look at..... but then they speak.

Ooooh yeah Alison King is lush. Gorgeous lass. Looked so hot in 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' and 'Shanghai Nights' and 'Mile High,' and a few other dramas from the noughties... And she is still gorgeous! 😍

But OMG that voice. Could cut glass! 😆

Show it to my daughters? It’s like a religion in our house, they’re adults now and they’ve watched it zillions of times since they were about six . I insisted.

Why on earth would you bring your daughters up watching such a fucked up, misogynistic, racist film? It's a horrible story and only people who haven't watched it think it's a heart warming classic

If you were trying to play the cool mum, showing old films to your kids, then you could have a done a lot better than BAT.

Now, Roman Holiday...that is a great film, much nicer story , funny and more 'honest'.

Maybe it was just that one film then. I have honestly never seen her in anything else (I don't think...) But her voice in Breakfast and Tiffany's was supremely irritating (IMO, and DH's opinion too!)

People enjoy all sorts of different things - there's nothing inherently wrong with watching an old film that's racist and misogynistic as long as you can acknowledge that those things are wrong and unacceptable in today's society.

That's all right @Lovebeingamummy2 Grin

SerafinasGoose · 02/09/2023 16:56

My favourite all-time old-school actress by a mile is Doris Day: I love all her films and have watched them until every line is seared into my memory. Yes, some are misogynistic - Pillow Talk has some dreadful moments in that respect but I can't not love it.

Different films for different times. To me the racism jars far more, but I have to agree with PPs about the troublesome 'tart with a heart' Hollywood trope. Same with 'man recreates woman in his preferred image': cf. 'Pretty Woman' and 'Pygmalion/My Fair Lady'.

To quote what is perhaps the best line of that movie: 'you're a pretty pair of babies, playing with your live doll'.

It rankles.

CoalTit · 02/09/2023 17:08

One of the theories about the novel is that Holly/Lula-Mae represents the (gay, male) author, Truman Capote. So it's already full of euphemisms and hints and disguises.
The film is a grotesquely bowdlerised travesty of the book, beaten only by the 1958 version of The quiet American for perverting the meaning of a novel.

You sound very angry indeed about it. And snarky. 'cool mum'?
It's quite possible to watch something and simply enjoy it on one level (in BaT I like the music, clothes, scenes of NYC etc) AND also be able to view it critically (Mickey Rooney, the messages about women).

Physicstruck · 02/09/2023 17:47

@Redbrickrebel isn’t it you playing ‘the cool mum’? sheepling along, shaming others, ensuring your children are only exposed to things that fit your agenda?
My world simply doesn’t work this way. You do you 🤷‍♀️

Physicstruck · 02/09/2023 17:49

Also we don’t like it because it’s a heartwarming classic. We like it because it’s SO VERY STYLISH. And I make no apologies for finding it so.

Indeed.
I love the party scene with all those people crammed into her tiny apartment.
