Posting for traffic. My family and I are relocating to Newport south wales. Anyone have any recommendations - where's best to live, where's best to avoid, places to go, primary and secondary schools, nurseries, all insight muchly appreciated 😁

Where will you be working? What's your budget?
Caerleon, Bassaleg and St Joseph's are widely considered to be the best high schools, as is the Welsh language one. Lots of places to avoid 😯

I'd agree with the above poster. Lots of areas I wouldn't live in, but many nice.
If you need to commute to Bristol or Cardiff that would definitely influence recommendations as the M4 is shocking.

Is it true that welsh is taught in primary and secondary? I'm a little concerned that my son will start (yr 9) and doesn't know any (yet). Looking at rental initially - no more than 1500 pcm.

Welsh is taught from nursery upwards, I'm pretty sure they make allowances. When does son pick his gcse subjects?

Adventureplease · 31/08/2023 21:28

Where are you moving from? Have you been to Newport a few times and spent some time there before making this decision?

Sparklybutold · 31/08/2023 21:29

@Asyousayit he hastnt picked yet. He's just going into yr 9

I've lived in Bristol and have holidayed around Newport/Cardiff area frequently. Why do you ask?

They don't teach Welsh in secondary as far as I know unless it's taken as a subject.

Ashy987654 · 31/08/2023 21:30

My son has been "taught" Welsh since nursery, (in an English speaking school) just about to start secondary and is no where close to being able to say more than about 3 sentences. I only did it at secondary school and it is a similar result 😂.

ballsdeep · 31/08/2023 21:30

There are lots of places to avoid. Why do you want to move to Newport? Not being sarcastic, but generally curious

ChaliceinWonderland · 31/08/2023 21:31

It's a dump. A friend lives there. Been few times.
Avoid

QOFE · 31/08/2023 21:31

Newport is fucking horrific. Why would you do this to yourselves?!?

(Unless of course you have to move for work or family reasons, in which case my commiserations and I wish you luck).

They definitely do and it’s compulsory to take it for gcse

pastypants · 31/08/2023 21:31

It's a pretty grim town... with lots of poverty much nicer places to live close by.

Teisenau · 31/08/2023 21:32

We live just outside Newport in the valleys.

You want to avoid Pillgwenlly and Bettws, but nobody shoot the messenger, it's only what everyone in Newport I know or have spoken to has told me.

We were relocating there but lost the house and ended up in the valleys. So glad about that, despite liking more of what's in Central Newport now than I used to.

Livedandlearned · 31/08/2023 21:32

Mine didn't take it for gcse

chillidoritto · 31/08/2023 21:33

Does it have to be Newport? Cardiff is much nicer!

Welsh GCSE is compulsory I believe? And Welsh bacc.

Though I’m mainly only here to ask…umm…why?!

I’d move elsewhere and get him to commute

Adventureplease · 31/08/2023 21:34

It’s not somewhere I would want to live. I didn’t mean to be unkind, I just wanted to be sure that you were making an informed decision.

Livedandlearned · 31/08/2023 21:35

Magor is nice OP

Livedandlearned · 31/08/2023 21:36

I'd agree with pp. I wouldn't live in Newport, it's awful!

Higglepigglewiggle · 31/08/2023 21:36

Caerleon and Ponthir are nice, if you can look a little further out then Usk and Magor are nice areas.

As someone else said, avoid Pill and Bettws. I wouldn’t rush to Duffryn either.

LadyBird1973 · 31/08/2023 21:37

You could live in Abergavenny and get him to commute
