Posting for traffic. My family and I are relocating to Newport south wales. Anyone have any recommendations - where's best to live, where's best to avoid, places to go, primary and secondary schools, nurseries, all insight muchly appreciated 😁

I agree, henllys is worth a look.

Premier Inn in Newport is fine for a night or two and cheapish at £50 a night.
Agree that Altyryn/Ridgeway would be the preferred area. Langstone is ok too if you need motorway access.
Blackwood/Hengoed is the valleys. It can be quite locally. I’m from a nearby area and I wouldn’t move back to the valleys now. I would feel very out of place.

Could you explain more about the valleys? My husbands grandparents were from the valleys, his dad grew up there. We loved visiting.

I’d recommend Marshfield a village between Newport and Cardiff. I’d also second Risca and Bassaleg. Further up the valley, Blackwood and Pontllanfraith have some nice parts too

Bringbackniles · 31/08/2023 22:39

I'd stick with Monmouthshire and hopefully your husband can commute.

This is top of my list at the moment - thoughts?

Which side of Newport is your DHs new job?

I would only consider Monmouthshire tbh

Newport is horrible

What about blackwood and hengoed?

I've lived in Hengoed, I really liked it. There's some dodgy areas but they're really obvious if you're looking at houses. There's some nice areas in Gilfach.

Blackwood again, there's some really nice areas. Town is decent enough, everything you'd kind of need is there.

Caerphilly isn't too far from Newport, not the best town in the world but some nice areas to live.

Thoughts on location?

Actually Caerleon was nice when I lived there (around 15 years ago!)

ZombieNations · 31/08/2023 22:45

Is your husband willing/able to commute a certain distance?
Closest to Newport I would suggest Caerleon, otherwise out of the city go further towards Cardiff!
If you would prefer a large town instead of city living Monmouth or Abergavenny would be better.
I think when you see the town for yourself you will understand, it’s really sad what’s happened to Newport over the last 15 years or so.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 31/08/2023 22:45

Blackwood is decent.

House looks good too.

Have you looked at Risca?

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 31/08/2023 22:51

Usk, Caerleon, Chepstow, Monmouth

Depends what you want from where you live. Magor is just a huge housing estate, Rogiet the same but smaller, I dislike Caldicot but some people seem to like it for some reason

ZombieNations · 31/08/2023 22:54

His job is on the Newport to Cardiff road, it is a very busy route but I would focus the search on villages/towns along that corridor if you can. Might be more expensive but will ultimately be worth it for convenience and opportunities for kids.

cymraes12 · 31/08/2023 22:54

DH works very near to where your DH will be working. We live in Cardiff and it takes him no more than half an hour to commute each way (working 7-3 so just outside of rush hour). He grew up in Rogerstone which is to be honest about the only nice part of Newport, but I know from a friend’s experience that you need to be quick to buy a house there as it has a very sought after primary school.

Leafyleaferson · 31/08/2023 22:59

Risca, Rogerstone, Crosskeys, Abercarn Cwmfelinfach, Ynysddu, Blackwood area are good spots not far from your DH's job but not actually in Newport which is a bit grim. I agree Monmouthshire is lovely but very expensive.

Sparklybutold · 31/08/2023 23:04

I can't thank everyone enough!

Live in Cardiff. End of. Seriously.

It's only 20 mind drive between Newport and Cardiff anyway.

GCSE Welsh shouldn’t be compulsory if stating after year 8 I think. My DC used the time to do homework with another new pupil.
