Posting for traffic. My family and I are relocating to Newport south wales. Anyone have any recommendations - where's best to live, where's best to avoid, places to go, primary and secondary schools, nurseries, all insight muchly appreciated 😁

This is top of my list at the moment - thoughts?

This house is by me. Lovely location. Close to very good schools and doesn’t take too long to get to the m4. I would be a bit concerned that it’s up for sale too.

Womblegreen · 31/08/2023 23:14

With that job location focus on Bassaleg, Rhiwderyn, Allt-yr-yn and Glasllwch in Newport area or Marshfield if heading towards Cardiff.

Sparklybutold · 31/08/2023 23:14

@ballsdeep I hadn't realised it was up for sale too - can't thank you enough for the heads up

Lived there for many years. I've lived all over Newport and the West is the best by far.
If you have anything specific to ask, don't hesitate.

I can't thank everyone enough!

💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐

You'll thank us even more if we talk you out of moving there! 😉
It really isn't great. My husband had a job there and commuted for a few months. He was on the outskirts and still hated it. I've had the mispleasure of having to hang around waiting for a passport renewal there all day on a couple of occasions. It was grim. I couldn't find anywhere to pass the time. There 2ere drinks/homeless people everywhere. That was 10 years ago and my understanding is that it's got worse since then.

Any school recommendations Cardiff way that are easy side of Cardiff?

Cardiff High is East Cardiff and very sought after.

Right near Roath Park and Roath Park Lake which is a great area.

There's lots of good primaries around there.
Roath Park Primary
Marlborough Road School
plus more

I know lots of people who work in Newport,
it's totally accessible from Cardiff.

Have to say I think Cardiff is a great place.
Not too big but all the advantages of a city.
And lots of parks. A Castle. A Bay area. Great Museum and endless sporting and cultural things happening.

menopausalbloat · 31/08/2023 23:17

Just wanted to add, I live in a small village now just outside Newport. Takes 20 mins by car to get to town.

CatchHimDerry · 31/08/2023 23:17

I’m near this area, DH is a teacher in the Welsh school, and I work the whole area as part of my job.

I won’t lie it’s not the best, but some lovely areas still!

Second PP votes for Bassaleg, Rogerstone, Rhiwderin etc

we are approx 10 mins from this area

Avoid Pill, sorry if anyone is offended!

Anotherchristianmama · 31/08/2023 23:18

Machen might be worth a look.

Machen might be worth a look.

My village. It is lovely with a fabulous Primary school.

llareggub · 31/08/2023 23:20

on the welsh thing, my sons are in school with quite a few Ukrainians who have learnt loads of welsh in a short space of time.

your son will be fine with welsh and yes, it’s compulsory.

I wouldn’t live in Newport either but I’m sure some parts are ok.

CatchHimDerry · 31/08/2023 23:23

@menopausalbloat hi fellow Machen-ite 👋 probably “outing” me now but don’t think I’ve posted anything too risqué

Cardiff areas vary a lot - plenty of them as bad as the ones in Newport people are warning you against who happily suggest Cardiff. In east Cardiff I'd avoid llanrumney. Rumney and St mellons you need to be choosy about immediate area.

Unless you are willing to go catholic /church, main secondary school in east Cardiff is Eastern high which doesn't have a great reputation. However you could look along the M4 corridor and go a bit further west with a reasonable commute. All the areas around junction 32 are nice and decent catchments (Radyr or Whitchurch) but expensive. I've commuted from that area to Newport and it was fine.

menopausalbloat · 31/08/2023 23:24

@CatchHimDerry Hello!
I grew up here then moved to Newport then moved back.
Can't fault Machen really.

housedramas · 31/08/2023 23:27

I work in Newport... Have a look at Cardiff, Caldicot, High Cross, certain parts of Cwmbran - even as far as Monmouth. Don't get me wrong, there are certain parts of Newport that can be ok, I'm thinking Bassaleg. I don't live in the area I work for many reasons!

SadCelticBunny · 31/08/2023 23:28

Everyone saying you avoid the town centre now and eat out in Cardiff, cheers!
That, free parking In Cwmbran and the shopping Centre at Spytty have ruined the down centre.

I live in Crosskeys //Risca but work in Newport.
It's no rougher than any other city/town that has been decimated by the policies of the Tories.
I love living in the Valleys because it's beautiful here, but there is something about Newport that I love even when shaking my head at the decisions of Newport CC and being heartbroken at the poverty.

I recommend where I live or Rogerstone, High Cross, Allt-yr-yn, Bassaleg, Marshfield,

KimberleyClark · 31/08/2023 23:28

Chepstow would be commutable to Newport.

Simplelobsterhat · 31/08/2023 23:28

Cross posted with the person who suggested Cardiff High. Didn't think of that as not very close to main routes to Newport, but having worked with that school Id warn you that the catchment area is incredibly expensive because it has such a good reputation, and even people who live in catchment don't always get a place, so it would be a risk.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 31/08/2023 23:31

KimberleyClark · 31/08/2023 23:28

Chepstow would be commutable to Newport.

Chepstow also has 2 good secondary schools

One is on the English side of the river and therefore follows the English curriculum if learning welsh is an issue

Member869894 · 31/08/2023 23:32

I grew up there. It has gone downhill as have many towns and the centre is rough. The people are lovely but in all honesty I wouldn't move there . Cardiff or even Bristol would be much nicer places to live

GCWorkNightmare · 31/08/2023 23:34

Workbabysleeprepeat · 31/08/2023 22:24

Premier Inn in Newport is fine for a night or two and cheapish at £50 a night.
Agree that Altyryn/Ridgeway would be the preferred area. Langstone is ok too if you need motorway access.
Blackwood/Hengoed is the valleys. It can be quite locally. I’m from a nearby area and I wouldn’t move back to the valleys now. I would feel very out of place.

Altyryn

Where?!

Do you mean Allt Yr Un?

GCWorkNightmare · 31/08/2023 23:38

Used to take me at least 45 mins to get from Jcn 32 to Jcn 24 of the M4 for work. And that was before the 50mph speed limit.

Sparklybutold · 31/08/2023 23:43

@MrJollyLivesNextDoor looking at the rental market and I note a few houses have been taken off owing to popularity, I'm guessing chepstow sought after? Any info about schools?

CatchHimDerry · 31/08/2023 23:50

@menopausalbloat similar for me, we do love it here

In5minutestime · 01/09/2023 00:00

Newport has a reputation for being awful. Caerleon/ponthir is nice, still considered within the boundaries of Newport but is a historic settlement (Roman legionary) and lovely little place. Honestly a lot of Newport is really rough and I would be more concerned about the standard of education than the Welsh language thing. Hardly anyone is fluent in Newport - it’s far more pushed in places like Cardiff where there’s more cash. Newport is also an easy commute from Cardiff too and it’s a much nicer city to live in.
