…driven to near suicide after his wife found out about his 3 YEAR AFFAIR just after giving birth because his job wasn’t going well…

Appreciate it’s the DM but surely being a shit to your wife shouldn’t be used to promote your current career?

Comedian Mark Watson says he cheated on his wife after career lows

The Bristol comedian's memoir, Mortification: Eight Deaths and Life After Them, details how he began having an affair when his comedy career began to falter.

Apparently Sofie Hagen's Edinburgh show was about her 5 year emotional affair with him. She didn't name him but it was very obvious apparently. I didn't see it but a friend did.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 30/08/2023 00:04

How disappointing. I really liked him, thought he was one of the good ones.
3 years! His poor wife.

Same here. I always found him very funny and he came across as one of the more intelligent, less obnoxious ones.

Re the fake Welsh accent, I recall hearing him explaining it ages ago. He said it was a nerves thing, where he felt too vulnerable to appear as he actually was, so he adopted a kind of persona, including the Welsh accent. It wasn't entirely random, as he has a number of Welsh family members.

I suppose you could maybe see parallels between him and people like Gina Yashere, Stephen K Amos and Omid Djalili, who, in their early careers, would frequently initially come on the stage speaking in the strong accent of their parents/family background for a few minutes - whether to break the ice, surprise the audience or as a bit of a vulnerability guard, like Mark claims with his - but then they would revert back to their natural British accents before long, whereas Mark did seem to make it a permanent act.

What an absolute self obsessed dick.

TBH I'm having trouble believing that he found 2 women willing to have sex with him 😂

This ⬆️….. made me spit my Horlicks
out I’m laughing so much

Wasted an hour of my life listening to a podcast with this bellend. Of course, he finds anything/anyone to blame but himself for his own behaviour. I only wonder who buys tickets to see these types of people? Someone must like them or they wouldn’t have a career, who are they? Will anyone on here admit to it?

I went to see him not long ago. He wasn't awful but he wasn't good. I found his character irritating. I don't give too much thought who I see as some comedians who are good on tv are crap in real life but also some who are crap on tv are great in real life.

He was already on my 'never against list.

Pimpmyfeet · 30/08/2023 00:11

Just read through the article. His lack of career satisfaction led him to cheat on his wife and he is using that story in order to progress his career (which he hasn’t been happy with so far) with a book and tour. AIBU to think he should give up and do something else? I feel sorry for his current partner who has had to deal with this being dragged up, I hope he’s worked hard on himself

AromanticSpices · 30/08/2023 00:15

At least he's giving it straight, like a pear cider that's made from 100% pears.

Pimpmyfeet · 30/08/2023 00:18

‘He was left crushed when the promise of book deals or film opportunities didn't arise after early success.’

Fame-hungry and shallow. But I remember watching some comedians chatting and one said that many comedians have self esteem issues and that’s what leads them into that career. I don’t know any comedians so not sure how true it is

SequinsandStiIettos · 30/08/2023 00:35

SmallBox odd as they have done quite a few podcasts together iirc, and fairly recently. She hasn't had sex in 8 years allegedly and you mention 5 years whereas I thought MW was cheating for three I did google though Wink
Review:
Hagen clearly also knows that in sharing details of a scandalous affair with a famous British comedian there will be much speculation as to who it might be. But she plays the anonymity with class and humour deflecting, as she says, for her own benefit rather than for his.
Interview:
I talk about a comedian who was a bit of an ar**hole to me but I don’t name him because it still feels like a weird thing to do… we’re all up the Fringe together.
I want to give the gift of gossip. We’re all taught to be very quiet all the time about the things that others have done to us. So, the show risks a lot by talking about this much-more-famous comedian.

Hope no one buys his book...
What an arse

CostedStrikeRate · 30/08/2023 01:08

Mark Watson: standard male

KnobbingtonKnobberson · 30/08/2023 01:33

he pretended to be Welsh??

Escapetofrance · 30/08/2023 01:44

I really hope his ex wife reads the comments on her. They should hopefully put a smile on her face!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 30/08/2023 01:50

Sophie hagan is perfect on the guilty feminist for ghastly women who are far too smug for their own good.

HobnobsChoice · 30/08/2023 02:16

Oh dear. He sounds very sorry for himself.
He sounds remarkably lacking in resilience whilst also being very sure he is super special

He wasn't as successful as he wanted to be, he wanted to be a well known comedian but not do panel shows (and so got dumped by his manager). He didn't like being heckled and he saw other comedians get much more famous than him whilst still being himself a famous and successful comedian.
He had a book deal but didn't get mega famous or get a movie deal for his books. He had fame and success but not as much as he felt he should have and he wasn't living the dream life he wanted. He felt he should have more, despite having a career many other comedians would envy (and writers seeing as he has published 8 books).

So to deal with that he had an affair for three years and also got his wife pregnant again whilst that affair was ongoing. What an absolute prince.

I'm not sure what " a couple of text messages away from suicide" actually means in this situation. I feel sorry for anyone who genuinely feels there is no other option but to end their own life, I've felt it myself but it still all sounds like Mark is a bit disappointed that the world doesn't see just how super special and talented and give him all the things he want.

234vhh · 30/08/2023 07:58

Someone asked if anyone sees his shows: I do.

I’ve seen him live, have tix booked to see him in the next few months, read his Contacts book, watched him live on Zoom during lockdown and am on his Discord channel so I have live Zooms with him related to that occasionally.

I don’t want to click on the Daily Mail link the OP has provided but it does sound like I am hearing a new side to him and it’s making me wonder if I can carry on enjoying his work. Can anyone link to the other article that the Mail one is apparently based on so I can see for myself?

caffelattetogo · 30/08/2023 08:39

His ex wife did some of her own shows and was much funnier than him, IIRC.

bellinisurge · 30/08/2023 08:40

His poor wife and kid. What a cock.

CurlewKate · 30/08/2023 08:42

@234vhh I think if you decide to not watch him because of this, you might find yourself pretty limited in the male comedians you watch.....!

CurlewKate · 30/08/2023 08:43

@234vhh Not saying that's a bad thing....

MyrtleSmurf · 30/08/2023 08:52

I'm not commenting on the suicidal bit, I feel that's separate.
I thought he was genuinely down to earth, funny without being "in your face", kind and reliable. I'm actually disappointed, and annoyed.
A quick fumble I could probably shrug off (still shit for his wife, I know) because you know, fame and stuff. But 3 whole years sleeping with someone else behind his wife's back. That is constant lying, deceit, betrayal. A conscious EFFORT to do the wrong thing.
If you're here Mrs Mark Watson, he's not worth it.

SwedishEdith · 30/08/2023 08:53

Not clicking on the Mail link either but have got the gist. I've always liked him. The accent thing, there's a clip from 12 years ago where he's talking about it so it's not particularly recent.

Mark Watson - Accents

Mark Watson goes back to his roots to perform stand-up in Bristol for Dave's One Night Stand. In this preview clip he talks about accents.Find out more:http:...

3 years! His poor wife.

Same, I thought he seemed like a decent guy on Taskmaster.

And now he's using his affair to promote his book... horrible. It's still all about him.
