It’s like the word gay. It used to mean one thing then the meaning changed over time. No quibble with Deecees interesting history lessons but in the uk the meaning of this term has evolved as described so well by the other women on this thread.

Read How To Stop Time by Matt Haig - each generation generates the same old issues in slightly different guises. Karen is this generation’s “burn the witch” attack on non conforming older women. YAWN

Yes I've seen John used interchangably with punter for a purchasor of sex but it's never been extended as a general insult for men who get out of line.
Probably because men's behaviour seldom is considered "out of line".

Yep, that's the only way I've seen John used beyond a given name usage.

Funny how even the most violent or obnoxious men aren't identified by one single name. Mind you, I doubt it would shut them up. It would most likely lead to a punch in the mouth for the name caller.

Odd, huh?

I've never heard "John" used as an insult either and I think that poster is taking the piss.

The main difference is that there is no one male name.
I have heard Chad, Chaz, Eric, Steve and Ken.

I've seen Karen used against any woman expressing an opinion many times. Never seen John used in that way

Which would definitely be women's fault of course. 🙄

Obtula · 26/08/2023 11:26

DeeCee's history lessons reference events that happened before Karen the name even existed.

ElBandito · 26/08/2023 11:27

Does an advert like this even make sense on a business level?

I've just check my doctors surgery and the practice manager is a middle aged woman. More than 50% of the doctors are women. All the nurses are women.
I can't see them looking at this advert and jumping to change software.

Naturally.

It's the old "look what you made me do".

Good Times.

I’ve got a friend called Alexa. Not sure which could be worse!

I guess the advertiser is hoping for a little "pick me" energy.

It's not something that features in many middle aged professional women's purchasing decisions though, so as a gamble it could fail.

When I worked in bars and as a waitress, by far the most bullying, aggressive and nasty behaviour I experienced came from men. Isn’t it funny how there’s not a term for them?

Absolutely this! I worked as a chambermaid, a receptionist, a shop worker, and a waitress/bartender from the age of 14 to 30, in 4 countries including USA and England. In hotels, men were the dirtiest and most careless, showing no respect for the staff having to clear up their literal shit (middle aged women 100% the cleanest and tidiest). Older men the most abrupt, demanding, finger-clicking, self important - but conditioning leads us to think ‘oh but their time is so IMPORTANT, and they’re AUTHORITATIVE don’t you know’. Young men often make a fucking mess and don’t pay well/tip. That person making loads of noise having a call - almost always men. Older women, speak up for good or reasonable service - shrill bitches, need to be put down.

Recently opened near us.....Karen's Diner (apparently they are a chain.). Been simmering silently about it for ages. Love a fun dining experience but really ???

"Karen's Diner is an interactive diner and an absurdly fun experience. At Karen's Diner, you will be greeted and waited upon by rude waiters, who in return are expecting you to give it full Karen".

resipsa · 26/08/2023 11:33

I've just emailed the company to complain. I'm incredulous that anyone on here can argue against the idea that the wording of that advertisement is anything other than inappropriate.

Again. Yes. John

A John is a user of sex workers.

IncognitoMam · 26/08/2023 11:38

Maddy70 · 26/08/2023 11:12

But that doesn't describe what behaviour is being called out , and they are far more derogatory terns surely?

There are many many words to use to describe any type of behaviour.

@DeeCee77

Is this term ok to be used in this advert?

You've gone completely Karen on us.

Can you just calmly explain your opinion on this particular advert?

Hello everyone, we are getting a lot of reports about this thread. So could we please suggest that we get it back on track and request that posters stop derailing the thread.

I was called it when I called out casual sexism in an online group I belong to. Wasn't shouting or complaining, just pointing something out. But cue lots of laughing and asking if I'd like to see the manager (to which I replied, I AM the manager!). It is used to shut women up. Full stop. It is horrible that a personal name is used to stop women from commenting for fear of (unfairly) being branded a harridan. We should all stop using it and tell others why they shouldn't use it either.

Anonymouseposter · 26/08/2023 11:44

DeeCee’s clips of horrible, aggressive racist women are upsetting to see and we know such people exist. Using the name Karen to describe them wasn’t really fair in the first place, just call them cunts. A Karen now seems to be any middle aged woman who says anything that differentiates her from a doormat. The advert is out of order.

continentallentil · 26/08/2023 11:46

@DeeCee77

To you truly have nothing better to do of a Saturday morning than spew a concoction of nonsense and misogyny? Whatever you are unhappy about, this is going to make you feel worse not better.

I call people out everytime I see them using "Karen" because it's a misogynistic agist insult designed to shut women up who are standing up for themselves.
I'm in a facebook group for ex-pats in my local area. I can't remember what the original thread was about but some bloke came on there calling the poster a Karen (I think it was something to do with how much you should charge for private English tuition).
I called him out on it, nicely, explaining why it's offensive and please not to use the term even if he disagrees with the original poster.
The abuse I was then subjected to was unbelievable - proving the point that Karen is mainly used by men to shut women down.
Got the fucker banned from the facebook group because of the abuse he wrote to me in response to my polite comment...
