More city people use horses as transport than country people.

My biggest surprise moving to a city, was to find how many people use horses as a method of transport instead of cars. I would have expected it to be none, but in fact it is significantly more than in the countryside.

Am I in the only UK city where this is the case? Is this an increasing trend?

YANBU - horses are a valid and common city transport method
YABU- you live in the only place where this happens

What? Are you coming to us from the 1820s? 😂

Elizabethwalton · 18/08/2023 09:58

Really?

user1471517900 · 18/08/2023 10:00

Have you moved to Equestria?

jotunn · 18/08/2023 10:00

Are there lots of mounted police round by you?

OneTC · 18/08/2023 10:00

Are you in Ireland?

I've never seen urban horses anywhere else

WhineWhineWhineWINE · 18/08/2023 10:00

What kind of transport and what kind of city? Do you mean the tourist horse and carriage thingies? Yes you'll see more of those in a tourist city than just out in the sticks I imagine. I have never seen anyone riding a horse in a city unless it's a police horse.

littleripper · 18/08/2023 10:01

Bradford? It blew my mind when I worked there

doroda · 18/08/2023 10:02

Have never seen a horse in my city.

HeddaGarbled · 18/08/2023 10:02

I don’t think anyone uses horses as transport, do they? It’s a hobby, or job, or ceremonial.

Ifailed · 18/08/2023 10:04

Apart from pets, the only people I've seen use horses as a method of transport are the police, army & undertakers.

No, I am in London, where it is apparently perfectly normal to pop down to the pub on your horse and tie it up outside while you drink with friends

I have only seen one family, who seem to be of traveller/Roma heritage.

More people seem to have SUVs and 4x4s in urban areas where there are no farm tracks or other reasons to have one, and the sooner they are restricted the better (separate driving test would probably achieve this).

HerMammy · 18/08/2023 10:05

Seriously? where do they keep these horses in a city that they can pop down to Tesco??

FourTeaFallOut · 18/08/2023 10:06

I was thinking this the other day when I went to tesco and parked the car next to four horses

You clearly live in a different London to me.

It's really not. Lived all over London in the last 30 years and never ever seen such a thing. Which weird enclave are you in?

MatildaTheCat · 18/08/2023 10:09

This could lead to an interesting new parking thread.

Cornettoninja · 18/08/2023 10:09

This is an intriguing idea - wonder if my town would get on board 🤔

@Davidsdaughter I think you may be in the only place in London/UK where this is a ‘thing’. Beats the ULEZ though…

TheYear2000 · 18/08/2023 10:09

Where in london are you??

DivingForLove · 18/08/2023 10:10

Never seen this in London either and have lived there for years 😂

Bruisername · 18/08/2023 10:11

I have never seen this in all my years in modern day London - are you a time traveller?

Seeline · 18/08/2023 10:11

I've occasionally seen riders in London but I live on the very edge near Surrey borders so I think they've just ventured in by mistake.
The only transport I've seen are the Travellers trying to drive their little pony carts through the congested main roads of the suburbs causing chaos.
I wouldn't say either were a regular feature and have never seen anyone at the local pub, supermarket etc.

Hoppinggreen · 18/08/2023 10:11

I tried to park in a disabled horse bay at Sainsbury’s last week and quite frankly the way some of those people dismounted easily makes me doubt they should have been there.
And don’t even get me started on the Parent and Horse spaces

Silly you, they are for disabled horses, not their riders.
