More city people use horses as transport than country people.

My biggest surprise moving to a city, was to find how many people use horses as a method of transport instead of cars. I would have expected it to be none, but in fact it is significantly more than in the countryside.

Am I in the only UK city where this is the case? Is this an increasing trend?

YANBU - horses are a valid and common city transport method
YABU- you live in the only place where this happens

Seriously? where do they keep these horses in a city that they can pop down to Tesco??

On grass verges, in fields, on roundabouts, etc

Live in rural Scotland, surrounded by farms, livery stables, and properties with land for own horses and for first time ever saw some one using a horse and trap last week, not a usual occurance! Village chat is that it's a Londoner who's retired here, maybe it is a thing!

Maybe it is a London thing

Not just London then

Have you considered the possibility that the person at the pub with their horse was actually just really going on a horse ride and decided to stop off for a pint on a nice day?

Davidsdaughter · 18/08/2023 15:52

BarbaraofSeville · 18/08/2023 10:38

There's a few people here who keep them in their gardens and it has been known to keep them in the house.

I can imagine that the OPs original point is actually true because almost no-one will use a horse for transport rather than leisure, there's more people in cities than the countryside, people in the countryside tend to have to travel further to reach shops, work etc and it's probably not going to be practical to make journeys that are 5/10/20 miles by horse, hence more people using horses for transport in cities than the countryside.

That makes sense, also a higher density of people, so even if the same percentage own and use horses, you would still see more horses in the city.

Are you talking about these horses on the south bank? because I'm not sure they really qualify as transport

They do if you only need to get from one side of the carousel to the other...

I live near a large city centre and there are a lot of horses just tied up on random bits of grass. I have no idea who they belong to. They are never ridden though.

It is the same around here, tied up on bits of grass, although they are ridden too - maybe the ones you see are ridden sometimes?

What part of London are you in? Because the only time I’ve seen them are travellers right on the outskirts of the city and very rarely.

Beenhereforever1978 · 18/08/2023 15:56

It's a common method of getting to the pub in our city.

Also lots of families travel in sulkys (sp?) here and our A road has a sign banning racing by horse-drawn vehicles.

Davidsdaughter · 18/08/2023 15:59

I would like to have an actual discussion about this, hence the thread, and I see I am not in the only area where there are many horses. Its a shame people who have nothing to contribute have joined the thread just to clutter it up with silliness and mockery, and made it difficult to find relevant contributions from other people who are aware of city horses.

I was hoping someone who rides a horse in London might have said something, but with all this nonsense on the thread, why would they?

Just googled 'horses Bradford' ... the top hit wasn't about them being used for transport!Grin

Apart from pets, the only people I've seen use horses as a method of transport are the police, army & undertakers.

And Travellers or Romanies

PriamFarrl · 18/08/2023 16:00

I used to ride my horse to the shop as a kid, but I lived out in the country.

And lots of people who live in London have said it's not a thing. Where in London are you talking about?

No, that is not what happens in my street. It is quite often there the whole afternoon and evening, There are at least 3 or 4 that come regularly, sometimes together, sometimes separately, and others at other pubs.

I live in a village in Lancashire, we used to see someone with his dog out in a trap quite often.

When we lived in Pennsylvania, we were on the edge of Amish country and there were plenty of traps (or something... not sure if that's the right word) if we headed out that way. The oddest thing was seeing them in gas stations....Grin
Amish people drive their horses to garages to fill up petrol cans, they can use the fuel for purposes other than cars.

Davidsdaughter · 18/08/2023 16:06

Seeline · 18/08/2023 10:11

I've occasionally seen riders in London but I live on the very edge near Surrey borders so I think they've just ventured in by mistake.
The only transport I've seen are the Travellers trying to drive their little pony carts through the congested main roads of the suburbs causing chaos.
I wouldn't say either were a regular feature and have never seen anyone at the local pub, supermarket etc.

Why would driving a pony cart cause chaos? They are no bigger than cars.

Op I want to see photos of horses just chilling on roundabouts or grass verges.

Kazziek · 18/08/2023 16:08

I am in London. I have never seen a horse used as a method of transport, other than by police or on a ceremonial occasion.

It's one of the maddest AIBU that I've ever seen, hence the mockery.

Go to Tesco and ask the horse people what they're up to if you want a serious discussion about it

ErrolTheDragon · 18/08/2023 16:10

Why would driving a pony cart cause chaos? They are no bigger than cars.

Usually slower and need quite a lot of room to overtake safely.

Buggy, that's the word for the Amish one-horse carriages.

Jorvik1978 · 18/08/2023 16:11

I rode mine through the middle of York on a very early Sunday morning during lockdown (just because I wanted to do it, and it was the ideal opportunity to do so) but there's no way I would ride into London as a form of transport. No way on earth....
