More city people use horses as transport than country people.

My biggest surprise moving to a city, was to find how many people use horses as a method of transport instead of cars. I would have expected it to be none, but in fact it is significantly more than in the countryside.

Am I in the only UK city where this is the case? Is this an increasing trend?

YANBU - horses are a valid and common city transport method
YABU- you live in the only place where this happens

I live near a large city centre and there are a lot of horses just tied up on random bits of grass. I have no idea who they belong to. They are never ridden though.

KenAdams · 18/08/2023 10:53

London, Montana?

Cherrysoup · 18/08/2023 10:57

Really? I mean, there’s a pub ride near me (near London), you go for a gallop, you stop at the pub then meander back but we were banned from the McDonald’s drive through!

CrapBucket · 18/08/2023 10:58

There is a lad in my village who goes to the Co op on his horse, I feel like it’s a lucky sign when I see him do this. But I’ve only ever seen hearse or police/military horses in London.

Cherrysoup · 18/08/2023 10:59

When I worked in Camden, I sometimes saw 50 or so horses being taken somewhere, trotting up the road with only a few being ridden, the rest being led.

Where in london are you??

About 1832, I suspect.

JoBrodie · 18/08/2023 11:02

I live in Blackheath and the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery horses (based in Woolwich) are regularly exercised in blocks of 30 or so (one rider sits on a horse with a riderless one either side). When working the horses will transport riders and pull wheeled guns... but other than that, horses are a bit of a novelty in my bit of London.

@Cherrysoup The horses in Camden were likely the same ones, the troop moved from their stables in St John's Wood to Woolwich a few years ago. I used to work in Camden (on Parkway) and saw them if I was in early.

Just fabulous! I remember they were mostly very dark bay or black, it looked fabulous!

I was thinking this the other day when I went to tesco and parked the car next to four horses

🤣🤣

CocoonofDavid · 18/08/2023 11:11

There’s a couple that live by my parents that ride their horses to the shops. Edge of a small city, into the city centre, to go to tescos etc. Apparently they don’t drive.

But it’s a rarity so it gets noticed. It gets mentioned on the local fb groups/local equestrian groups (mainly as they were understandably moaning that they weren’t wearing hi viz and the guy wasn’t wearing a hat re safety concerns).

We have lots of leisure riders near by (myself included) that will ride out to exercise their horse and might stop off at the pub or village shop on the way. My teenager and his friend used to stop off at the co-op (one went in and one stayed with the horses), in the summer holidays to stock up on snacks and then go out on a long ride for the afternoon… but I don’t think that counts!

I saw these on holiday at Holkham a couple of years ago. It was lovely to see them galloping along the beach and in and out of the sea. They looked as though they were really loving their freedom. I lived in London as a child and the only horses I saw were with the rag and bone man and the police.

Sparklesocks · 18/08/2023 11:32

I’ve missed the joke OP

Thewallsof · 18/08/2023 11:35

I've never seen this. Where in London?

beachbitch · 18/08/2023 11:52

Unless you live in Hyde park and are talking about the tweed brigade who parade through it each weekend , then I am very confused by your post OP.

I live near blackheath (or in, as estate agents try to pretend), and while I've never seen that (looks amazing), it's common to get stuck behind mounted police on the way to/from Lewisham station. So seeing horses isn't so much a novelty round my end, but nowhere quite near what OP is describing 😂

It would be awesome if this was the case- so much calmer than cities full of cars.

Calmer? Are you acquained with many horses?

Haha you've never met my fruitloop.

I rode my pony to school when I was a sixth former during a free period and then was a bit stuck Grin bit impractical

MojoMoon · 18/08/2023 13:12

There are quite a few riding stables in London and I can imagine they might do a ride to a pub as a novelty in the summer but I wouldn't class it as a form of transport!

There are stables in Richmond, Hyde Park, Wimbledon, Wormwood Scrubs, Ealing, Osterley, Mudchute Park, Lea Valley, Trent Park, Finchley, Golfers Green, Epping and more. Kids only stables in Brixton and Kensal Town as well.

Ha ha, yes!

WeWereInParis · 18/08/2023 15:36

No, I am in London, where it is apparently perfectly normal to pop down to the pub on your horse and tie it up outside while you drink with friends

Was it maybe a big dog?
