Friend totally spoilt a series I was planning on watching!

Friend told me she was currently on season 8 of a tv series. I asked what it was about and she gave me a brief idea. It sounded just like the type of thing I’d enjoy so I said “oh that sounds great! I’ll start watching season one tonight”.

She then started telling me about season one … I felt she was going a bit too much into detail considering I’d just told her I was going to watch it so I said “yep, sounds just up my street, I’ll watch it tonight, hopefully I won’t come across any spoilers”

She then went on to basically tell me the full details of season one including who dies, who gets married, the twists and turns … I tried saying a number of times “don’t tell me anymore as I’m going to watch it tonight” so she said “oh you will love it, she ends up up pregnant to Jamie but at the end she … “ I said “stop! Don’t tell me!” So she said “ ok I’ll let you watch it yourself but it is sad at the end of season 1 as her sister dies … season 2 starts off with …”

wtf?! Who does that?! How did she not realise she was spoiling the whole bloody thing?!

Some people can't help themselves. I think I would have stuck my fingers in my ears and said "la la la" very loudly until friend stopped talking. That might have got the message across. 😂

CandyflossKaren · 18/08/2023 07:35

Just watch it

Hardly spoiled!

Anothernamethesamegame · 18/08/2023 07:46

Sounds very selfish. Is this unusual behaviour or usual. If unusual is let it go and think maybe she just got overexcited.

As an aside I find it really boring when people go in depth about something they’ve watched.

cancan678 · 18/08/2023 07:47

Now I want to know that series

KnottyKnitting · 18/08/2023 07:50

OFGS my MiL does this. We always try to avoid talking to her about TV programmes or films. If she asks if we have seen so and so that we plan to watch we immediately ask her not to tell us anything but she then says something cryptic like " Oh I won't say anything but there is such a twist at then end/ it was so sad at the end/ " famous actor's" part is not what you expect."

Drives us nuts!!! 😡

NeedTheSeaside · 18/08/2023 07:53

thats annoying, but given you didn't know about series until you asked her for recommendations, it's hardly a big deal. There's SO much out there now, it's not like she spoiled a series when there were only 3 channels. Just watch a different one if you this is now spoilt for you. Or you could try just watching it & see how it goes.

Pottedpalm · 18/08/2023 07:57

Why not leave the room when she wouldn’t stop?

RedRobyn2021 · 18/08/2023 08:43

The real question is, which series is it because I want to watch it

Ohyesreally · 18/08/2023 08:52

I think you should have been firmer the longer her behaviour went on... I've politely asked you not to tell me anything more. I've made it clear I don't want to know anything about it so for god's sake, just stop it!!!

squashi · 18/08/2023 09:11

Can't stand it when people go into detail about the plots of things they've watched or read, unless I've actually asked them for that detail (which I never do - I say I'll watch it and thanks for the recommendation). It sounds irritating that she didn't take your cue to stop - somewhat lacking in communication skills on her part.

Drews · 18/08/2023 09:21

She is an idiot for telling the story after you told her not to but just because you have a idea of what is going to happen doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. Noone watched Titanic not knowing what happens in the end.

dottiedodah · 18/08/2023 09:23

This is annoying ! I always try and not give much away.My friend was watching a series I liked ,and I just said "Oh you will love it ,its so good" I think she just got a bit carried away by the sounds of it!

cruffinsmuffin · 18/08/2023 09:24

She's a silly sausage for continuing once you'd said that!

However if it's got 8 already released seasons I don't count it as spoilers 😂 if it was something being streamed currently and you'd missed an episode by a day and saw the plot point in the news, that's a spoiler to me!

Candleabra · 18/08/2023 09:26

Oh no. I have family members who do the “I won’t say a thing about it but….MAJOR SPOILER…”
They also do it with sporting events. I won’t tell you the score but I wouldn’t bother watching…”

zurala · 18/08/2023 09:27

Why didn't you tell her to shut the fuck up, in those words? I would have.
It's rubbish when you know what happens, it really does spoil it.

aSofaNearYou · 18/08/2023 09:35

I think some people genuinely aren't bothered about spoilers so just don't get it. She sounds bloody tone deaf though given you kept saying it. You should have been blunter and literally said "I do not want to know what happens so can we stop talking about it now please."

ErmWhatever · 18/08/2023 09:47

A friend did this to me some years ago when I was going to see The Book of Eli. "Its really good. In the end you find out he's ***" I was like...did you really just just tell me the ending???
She apparently didn't spoil anything because "it's still a good movie even when you know" Her stupidity never failed to amaze me.

MonsterCalling · 18/08/2023 09:48

PP asking the name of the series - OP has passed on several of the major spoilers given by her friend so you may not want to know…

In fairness however - the series she is talking about had its first season ten years ago. I think we need to agree on a statute of limitations for spoilers Grin

Shinyandnew1 · 18/08/2023 09:52

She then went on to basically tell me the full details of season one including who dies, who gets married, the twists and turns

I would have put my fingers in my ears or left the room!

I was assuming Outlander with the name, but the sister has thrown me!

ThanksItHasPockets · 18/08/2023 09:52

YANBU to be irritated but why include the spoilers in your post!? I’ve only seen bits of it but I recognised the series you are talking an out straightaway and didn’t know the second spoiler you mentioned.

I always google ahead - I enjoy series and films so much more when I know what is coming so maybe your friend is like me and was thinking she was helping 😆 it's not a spoiler if it's already been out for 8 seasons, spoilers are for who went home on strictly last night or what happened on a drama running on itv when you missed one episode!

Asmrmebaby · 18/08/2023 09:54

Your friend sounds very annoying OP

Is she 15?

I think within the context of someone saying "I haven't watched it but I'm about to", it is a spoiler. You couldn't grumble if you stumbled across spoilers online when it aired years ago, but directly telling someone in this context is a dick move (one which I agree she might be ignorant of).
