Friend totally spoilt a series I was planning on watching!

Friend told me she was currently on season 8 of a tv series. I asked what it was about and she gave me a brief idea. It sounded just like the type of thing I’d enjoy so I said “oh that sounds great! I’ll start watching season one tonight”.

She then started telling me about season one … I felt she was going a bit too much into detail considering I’d just told her I was going to watch it so I said “yep, sounds just up my street, I’ll watch it tonight, hopefully I won’t come across any spoilers”

She then went on to basically tell me the full details of season one including who dies, who gets married, the twists and turns … I tried saying a number of times “don’t tell me anymore as I’m going to watch it tonight” so she said “oh you will love it, she ends up up pregnant to Jamie but at the end she … “ I said “stop! Don’t tell me!” So she said “ ok I’ll let you watch it yourself but it is sad at the end of season 1 as her sister dies … season 2 starts off with …”

wtf?! Who does that?! How did she not realise she was spoiling the whole bloody thing?!

She didn't need to say all that, but you need to be prepared for spoilers if you start watching something that's at least 8 seasons long already.

CoffeeCantata · 18/08/2023 10:02

Completey sympathise, OP. I would never do that to someone.

From the other side of the coin, though, I have a friend who is so paranoid about spoilers that she won't even let anyone mention a series or film she's planning to watch. I asked if she'd watched something on TV and she said she'd seen episode one, so I said 'It's great - I think you'll be intrigued," and apparently that was a spoiler! And I'm really careful not to give anything away.

Sounds very selfish. Is this unusual behaviour or usual. If unusual is let it go and think maybe she just got overexcited.

As an aside I find it really boring when people go in depth about something they’ve watched.

Me too. Trumped only by people who insist on recounting every tedious detail.of their dream from the previous night

Yes, it’s on par with telling you about their dream.

I’d have shut her down long before she gave every plot line away.

Hopefully you can still enjoy it but you need to be more assertive about such things.

CommonVetch · 18/08/2023 10:25

We are a no spoilers family, but I've had to work on that for the sake of teen DC and my partner. 😬 I am also working on not blurting out my guesses during a film or show so as not to spoil it for people in the room - I'm usually right and it irritates my family! (Sorry to anyone who was in the cinema with me in 1999 for The Sixth Sense!!)

But no, I wouldn't carry on sharing plot points with someone who specifically asked me to stop! That's weird behaviour.

MonsterCalling · 18/08/2023 09:50

In fairness however - the series she is talking about had its first season ten years ago. I think we need to agree on a statute of limitations for spoilers Grin

I disagree!! Now we live in an era where you can watch things at any point we should preserve the surprise for people who didn't watch it first time round. I think it's really wrong how popular culture normalises spoilers for popular things like Harry Potter. Or how Friends spoiled Little Women!

I'm watching a very famous show now from 20 years ago, it would have been totally ruined had someone taken that attitude.

Todaywego · 18/08/2023 10:51

For future conversations like this - learn to yell STOP! and put your hand out in a clear stop signal.

5foot5 · 18/08/2023 10:53

Next time you see her if she asks whether you enjoyed watching it just tell her that you decided not to bother at all since she had just spoiled the whole thing for you by telling you everything that happened. If that doesn't get the message across I don't know what will.

Hmindr68 · 18/08/2023 11:14

It’s Game of Thrones for the pp asking

I don't think it is - Jamie and 8 seasons fits but nothing else does, plus OP wasn't familiar with it and surely most people know what Game of Thrones is! Outlander is definitely closer, though no dead sister.

RedRobyn2021 · 18/08/2023 08:43

The real question is, which series is it because I want to watch it

Sounds like Outlander from what she said ( and I've never watched it either)

GreenEyedGiant · 18/08/2023 11:21

Outlander doesn't have 8 seasons yet though, does it? Sounds like GoT but not the sister dying.

And LOL at this thread about to turn into 'what's the series called??' instead of yes, she's BU to ruin the plot for you.

Haha if people don't say, you're always going to wonder.

Outlander has 7 seasons so far but that seems like a detail that could easily be wrong.

melj1213 · 18/08/2023 12:13

Tbh by the time a series is 8 seasons on you can't really complain about spoilers from S1 ... But if you haven't watched it and don't want to know what happens it's on you to shut down people who won't STFU by explicitly telling them "Stop talking about X. I do not want to know any information until I have seen it myself."

It can't be, no dead sister at the end of season 1.

MonsterCalling · 18/08/2023 13:18

Maybe OP is so committed to remaining spoiler-free that she made up the plot events to create her example!

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 18/08/2023 13:19

CandyflossKaren · 18/08/2023 07:35

Just watch it

Hardly spoiled!

Of course it's spoiled.

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 18/08/2023 13:21

Someone told me the twist in The Sixth Sense before I'd watched it, FFS!

ItstimeToMoveagain · 18/08/2023 13:26

I love a spoiler but wouldn't give them out unless people asked

I'm watching GoT again now and it doesn't sound like it's that!

DottyLottieLou · 19/08/2023 09:36

Why are you telling us and not her?

OriginalBin · 19/08/2023 09:45

Honestly, I get irritated by people who regard ‘knowing the major plot events’ as some kind of killer blow to enjoyment. I watch very few series, and don’t go about telling people about them anyway (as a pp said, it’s incredibly dull to sit through detailed accounts of the plot of anything), but I have taught undergraduates who complained one of my lectures told them the twist ending of a novel that was published in 1938 that they’d been given on a reading list in September and had lectures on in November!

Clickandcollect82 · 19/08/2023 09:48

@OriginalBin

if you get irritated by that… you must spend most of your life perpetually irritated by so very much in life!

Does this qualify as a spoiler!
