Sooo.. I'm in need of some extra cash. I work part time but cannot up my hours for a few months. I've signed up and made my account. The pay isn't great at 18p per minute and I'm conscious it's part of the sex industry which I do feel strongly about. It feels wrong to feed into that industry and I guess a lot of the women on these lines are vulnerable and doing it for the same reason as me. Desperately needing money. Im not going to do it for long. When I can up my hours I will stop doing it (unless im successful and actually make some decent money from it!) please don't judge me, i need to feed my child and pay my bills.

So my question is, has anyone done this before? Any tips? I've done my 'training' and I have my portal and im ready to start answering calls. Im nervous. Im going to get some seedy men but times are hard at the moment. Posted on chat but didn't get a single reply so shamelessly posting here. AIBU to try the sex industry? It's a reputable company, my supervisor seems lovely and has done it for years. It's pretty strict though, you get various strikes for not answering a call within 2 rings. You're not allowed to hang up unless they are under 18 or talk about incest etc. I'm worried it's going to warp my view of men, but I'm at a loss on what to do. I can't get another part time job around the job I already have so this seems like the only viable option.

You can literally sign up to these companies who pay you for reaching certain levels on game on your phone or filling in surveys, testing products etc. They can be done around any job.

If you want to do it, go for it but do not kid yourself that there is no other option.

Those companies are mostly massive scams that make you either nothing, or a few pence for many hours of effort.

I'm not saying that sex chat lines are the answer either, of course. Particularly if, as in the OP's case, you find the whole industry repellent.

I dont think there is anything wrong with doing sex work or working in the sex industry BUT i would urge you to reconsider because you dont seem to want to and are expressing concerns about who you will get on the other side of the phone and the fact is you will get some dodgy seedy grim people and if you are not aware and ok with that it will have a negative impact on your mental health.

Also tbh i dont think this is an ethical company to work for doing sex work if their stance is you cant hang up unless they are under 18 or talking about incest. If you are going to so sex work your better off doing it off your own back like doing dick ratings or girlfriend for a day texting or selling used pants, atleast you can set the rules for what you are ok or not with not some company exploiting you for 18p a min

I've been on the £10 a day threads. I do the surveys and make about a quid a day and I don't have a PayPal account. I can make more money on these chat lines than the surveys.

I know if I put the hours in, even though it's pretty shit pay, I will get paid via bank transfer every 2 Fridays. I get a better rate as it's roughly £10.80 per hour you're on the phone. Just thought I could do it while I'm ironing, after DC is in bed etc.

I have bills to pay and my wages aren't covering them - it's really tough at the moment.

0.18 per minute works out at £10.80 an hour, only if you're constantly talking for that hour, which I assume you won't be so it'll probably end up working out at considerably less. Tbh, there's probably easier ways to make minimum wage. What is your other job/hours? How old is your child?

Look OP you just sound like you don't want to do it in your OP. I'd be very wary of someone telling me you can't hang up and you have to answer in 2 rings, what if one of your children wake up and need you?

You have designated 'shifts' with calls constantly coming in for 6 hours. You just have to try and keep the person on the phone for as long as possible. You're not allowed to miss calls during that time and the phone literally rings as soon as you put the phone down. You have to complete the 6 hours (for example my designated shift is 6am-12pm) on Sunday. Then you can come and go as you please as long as you've done your shift iyswim. You can be on the phone all day if you want to.

DC is a toddler. I work in finance.

If you feel this is your only option for now, you’ll have to get into the right frame of mind.

there are clean, safe videos on YouTube from women in the business who give tips and ways of preparing yourself for calls. You may find them reassuring.

most of the men will just be lovely and a bit shy - some of course will be creepier. It’s a mixed bag!

one last thing - look and see which bank accounts are laxer than others about this kind of work. If your money is obviously coming from this industry some banks have a problem with that and can shut down your account. Perhaps your supervisor can give you advice on that.

I know you haven’t arrived at this decision easily so no judgement here and I Hope you will not have to do it for too long if you really dislike it.

I don't think I could do it. Not because I have a problem with the sex industry but the idea of talking on the phone for six hours straight AND pretending to be having a lovely time with the creepiest of creeps just sounds mentally exhausting. I worked in a normal call centre once and that was tiring enough!

You laugh but my friend was honestly making about £700 a month selling used pants online 😂 it took a while to build up to that and its not quite as simple as just wearing and sending used pants in that you have to wear them a couple of days or claim you have got yourself off in them and usually provide evidence in terms of including a photo in the package (my friend sent bum shot polaroids with hers but with nothing identifying) ...took her a while to get enough clients to make that money too but is absolutely a thing because some men are complete weirdos who are happy to pay £100 plus to smell your vagina on lingerie 🙃🙃

@washingmachineslivelongerwithcalgon I've not done phone chat. Have worked in other aspects of the sex industry briefly many, many years ago.
One thing I would say is watch out for 'sex worker mindset'. It's difficult to describe, but it's like you put a label on yourself and start to internalise the judgmental views of others. Go in with clear boundaries and my advice would be whatever you do don't give up your usual job or reduce hours in it etc, to pick up more hours in sex work.
The company you are going to be working for sounds interesting. Is it 6 hours of calls guaranteed then? Is there a minimum number of shifts you take each week? Could I ask the name of the company? Interesting, I thought it would be a lot of waiting around nowadays.

Yes the company is livelines. The phone doesn't stop ringing for hours on end and you log in and log out when you're finished. You just have to agree to do 1 6 hour shift in the week and the rest you can come and go!
