Adult Sex Lines

Sooo.. I'm in need of some extra cash. I work part time but cannot up my hours for a few months. I've signed up and made my account. The pay isn't great at 18p per minute and I'm conscious it's part of the sex industry which I do feel strongly about. It feels wrong to feed into that industry and I guess a lot of the women on these lines are vulnerable and doing it for the same reason as me. Desperately needing money. Im not going to do it for long. When I can up my hours I will stop doing it (unless im successful and actually make some decent money from it!) please don't judge me, i need to feed my child and pay my bills.

So my question is, has anyone done this before? Any tips? I've done my 'training' and I have my portal and im ready to start answering calls. Im nervous. Im going to get some seedy men but times are hard at the moment. Posted on chat but didn't get a single reply so shamelessly posting here. AIBU to try the sex industry? It's a reputable company, my supervisor seems lovely and has done it for years. It's pretty strict though, you get various strikes for not answering a call within 2 rings. You're not allowed to hang up unless they are under 18 or talk about incest etc. I'm worried it's going to warp my view of men, but I'm at a loss on what to do. I can't get another part time job around the job I already have so this seems like the only viable option.

You work in finance - do you have any formal professional qualifications?

I did it for about a year a decade ago with liveliness.

I would sooner go to a food bank than do it again. I'd say it was 99 percent garden variety pervs and 1 percent really upsetting calls, including one man saying he was suicidal and about to take an overdose, spent an hour trying to persuade him to please not do it and get help. The bad calls weighed heavy on my mind and it made me depressed. Also would get regular calls from a man who I am sure had learning difficulties which felt extremely ethically dubious and made me go completely off piste asking him if he understood it was a premium rate line and if he was the bill payer.

I think with all kinds of sex work the only way you can be unnafected by the bad experiences is if life/the industry had already crushed you

ZOMBIE THREAD!

A lot of women work in the sex industry for these exact reasons - it’s a job, and they need money. Phone line work is a relatively safe option for sex work because it’s anonymous and at a distance.

Look after your mental health, though. Check in with yourself regularly. Some women can completely compartmentalise and it won’t affect the rest of their lives, but you might find it playing on your mind if you have to talk to creepy men etc.

I don’t judge any sex worker for doing the job they do but it is an industry which is rife with abuse and exploitation - make sure it’s not talking too much of a toll on you.
