Mainstream women's shoes only going up to a size 8

And even then its not always a 42!

Took ds school shoe shopping today and while I was in and out of the various shoe shops, I had a quick look in the women's sections.

I am a 9, but a 43 9. Sometimes a 10. Not a single shoe was bigger than an 8.

Now, luckily I know where I can buy shoes that fit, but I was thinking about this, and isn't it ridiculous?

So, I'm wondering how many women here have feet larger than an 8? I mean, I imagine there aren't tens of thousands of us, but there just be enough to warrant shops selling 9s and 10s?

Size 9 (43) here and wide to boot!
mid you have any good suggestions please share!

GiraffeInABath · 10/08/2023 17:10

I’m a 10!

enchantedsquirrelwood · 10/08/2023 17:10

My mum complains of the opposite - she and I are both size 4.5. I tend to buy all my shoes online, but she goes into shoe shops where she lives and says they often don't have anything smaller than a 5!

Great idea.

Tom's, Dr. Martens, birkenstocks all do proper 43's.

I wondered about the other end of the scale too.

I deichman today there were loads of size 3s. And the John Lewis shoes sales bit.

I'm a 9. Finding shoes I like in my size (or ANY shoes in my size a lot of the time) has always been a nightmare. I have a pair of Duo boots which I love (and they actually fit my calves too which are fairly narrow) but they were really expensive. Well over £200.

mnahmnah · 10/08/2023 17:14

On the Next website they have 546 pairs of shoes in a 9 (43)

Cherrysoup · 10/08/2023 17:14

Search Evans shoes on eBay, go up to an 11 and vary in width from E to EEE. Also, Hotter, although I wouldn’t pay full price. I was lucky to find 2 pairs on eBay, brand new, really good value.

watching with interest, my dd is currently a size 8 and still growing so probably going to be going to be an issue in the future

Menopausehaver · 10/08/2023 17:16

Size 42/8/7.5 depending on the shop. It’s infuriating. When I ask sales assistants why they don’t have the stock I’ve been told it’s because there’s not much demand. Ie they don’t sell many, not surprising they don’t sell many if they are not in stock, it’s a self fulfilling prophecy. I must be amongst the few women who absolutely hate buying shoes.

BCBird · 10/08/2023 17:16

I feel.your pain. I was explaining to my size 6 mate how difficult it is. I just want a pair of low heal round toes shoes with a strap across. Have to wear an orthotics insert. I've been lookin for 3 weeks. Saw some lovely ones in office but can tell they won't be suitable. Someone told me about a site,I looked- found what I.wanted- £120 pound. Can't afford that. Looks like having the comfy but ugly pair from.Clarks- gutted🙄any recommendations for sites greatly received. There is definitely less choice than.there used to be. Has anyone tried gel.arch supports?

Cherrysoup · 10/08/2023 17:16

I’ll mention JDWilliams/Yours etc-they do size 9 xw, but they don’t fit me and don’t seem very wide, frankly.

And I think I've tried on 349 of them, after ordering them online. No chance of trying them on in an actual shop.

They were all shit. Next shoes aren't for me.

Same, except I'm a 2/3.
I have hooves!

L3ThirtySeven · 10/08/2023 17:20

I’m a size 3 and often stuck buying childrens shoes. Them being VAT free is a small consolation prize.

hairyunicorn · 10/08/2023 17:21

I'm a wide fit side 9 and get all of my shoes from Hush Puppy, ASOS and surprisingly New Look.

No great quality from New Look, but they are comfortably wide and fit my feet

BCBird · 10/08/2023 17:22

Went in Next yesterday to see what the size 9s I'd seen online were like. Didn't have them.in stock. There was a 6 no good but thought it would give me an idea re style. Looked cheap. Would have got them.as am.desperate. bought a shirt instead-oops

Totally agree! Get told we don't stock many as not much demand, but they always sell out. Ugh. Is a nightmare.

Sick of ordering online a supposed 9 which turns up and is clearly marked as a 42 or even a 41!!! Yes, ASOS I mean you!

I also have wide ish feet, not super wide but a wide D or E but with narrow heels so wide fitting slips off at the back. Total ball ache getting new shoes.

Neonyellowfish · 10/08/2023 17:23

Size 9 is pretty big for womens feet. I doubt the store sell many hence not stocking them as they won’t sale them.

My feet are a 7 and I was always told I had big feet.

BCBird · 10/08/2023 17:25

When I was living in France 35 years sho when I asked for a 43, I was brought men's shoes🙄

bobotothegogo · 10/08/2023 17:25

And in many places their sizing is off - am an 8 but am finding in more and more places their sizes are on the snug side.

Is that not because you're a half size rather than a small size? I'm a 4 and I can get my size absolutely everywhere! There's often more of them on the shelves as fewer people buy them so they don't sell out as quickly!

TheBitterBoy · 10/08/2023 17:28

I am a size 8 and was infuriated a few years ago when I decided to treat myself to a new pair of leather long boots. I went to Jones, saw a style I liked and asked for a size 8, only to be told that sorry all their size 8s in that style were sold out, and would not be restocked. The assistant actually said to me 'you need to come earlier in the season, as all the 8s go quickly' (it was the beginning of September). I said that seemed odd, and asked if they have many people asking for 8s , and she said 'oh yes all the time, but head office still won't stock more in case they don't sell'
I'm lucky as I am actually a true 41, so it's easier for me, but my mum was a size 9 and struggled to find nice shoes her whole life until she found Evans. And even they are gone now.

Trouble is people are getting taller & generally feet get bigger, so shops aren't catering for a growing demographic.
I'm an 8 & it's a pain, but at least there is slightly more choice than for a 9.
Just to say Moshulu do some styles in a 9 (43) for anyone interested.
