To talk me down from the ceiling - dd passport expired and we fly on saturday

About to lose my mind - checked through passports this morning and realised that daughters passport expired in July of this year not July of next year as I thought. Can't use the premium service as its a child and no appointments available anyway. Have fast track appointment in Glasgow 0830 on Tuesday but we fly Saturday morning. Its the first time we've been abroad in 4 years. Can't believe we've been so stupid, she's been talking about this holiday non stop.

Your only hope is arriving late on your holiday.

JuneOsborne · 06/08/2023 12:58

There was an almost identical thread last week. They made it. Will try and find it...

SpringSparrow · 06/08/2023 12:59

Yes I saw a thread last week where the poster’s husband got a new passport on the day and that was from Glasgow so 🤞🏻.

Mumof1andacat · 06/08/2023 13:00

Just get to Glasgow appointment and see what happens. No more can be done at the moment. Thoughts are with you. There was a similar thread this week. Best of luck x

bellac11 · 06/08/2023 13:04

You'll be ok if your appointment is Tuesday, even if you need to start your bit of the holiday with the child slightly late

An expensive mistake but it will be ok

blackforesthotchoc · 06/08/2023 13:08

Thank you for link - we just feel so stupid. Idiotically we had to get the other kids first passports and didn't think to check hers!

Praying get same response!

GoingGoingUp · 06/08/2023 13:13

Oh gosh, it’s an identical situation to that thread from last week!

Really hope your outcome is exactly the same!

Don'tcallthepolice · 06/08/2023 13:21

Happened the same to us last year, Just make sure you have EVERYTHING correct when you take your stuff to be appointment. You will be fine.

determinedtomakethiswork · 06/08/2023 13:32

As long as you take everything with you on Tuesday, they will issue it that day.

NotAMug · 06/08/2023 14:16

My friend got her daughters by just turning up at the passport office. She had to stay in London overnight and they issued the following day. There was an error on the form (i had completed the part confirmation her identity) and they just called me to confirm it and that was it.

I hope you get it sorted. Obviously I get in this instance it was just a mistake of remembering the date of expiry but I think so many people are getting caught out with the changes since Brexit.l and it seems hit or miss as to whether the passport office sorts it for online applicants, in person seems more reliable.

I looked at my passport and it expires May 2026, however issue date was Sep 2015 so actually it runs out Sep 25. I am going away May 2025 so will need to renew before that as I will need 6 months left for this destination so I probably need to renew early 2025 to be on the safe side. I have seen quite a few posts on some cruise holiday FB groups I'm on where elderly people have been turned away as they have not realised that they can only have 10 yrs from date of issue.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/08/2023 14:19

OP this happened to me a few years back - exact same scenario, right down to the appointment on Tuesday, flying Saturday. We made it. In fact the passport arrived on Friday. Try and stay hopeful.

Surely the expiry date stated in the passport is the date you go by. I think although the rules have recently changed back in 2015 they used to add the unexpired time on your old passport onto your new passport so that may explain why it was issued in sept 2015 but doesn’t expire till may 2026

I was told your passport is now only valid for 10 years from issue, you used to be able to renew early and they would add the months on but now you can't and any that have these additional months on are only valid for 10 years exactly, not 10 years plus X months. That is what our travel agent told us when we booked that specific holiday.

The 10 year issue only applies to travel in Europe. Other countries don't have this passport criteria.

For EU travel the passport needs to be;

  • under 10 years old on the date of entry unto the EU (look at issue date and add on 10 years).
  • it needs to have 3 months remaining when you leave the EU country (look at expiry date)

I'm confused? That's just what I said.

But I assumed you weren't travelling in the EU as you said you needed 6 months remaining so you wouldn't be affected by the 10 year rule

Ah ok, we are going to various places that month so varied requirements which is really annoying.

Mummysaf · 06/08/2023 15:27

OP this exact thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. Glasgow Passport office are amazing. I had an appointment on Wednesday and my DDs passports arrived Saturday morning. They told me they have no backlog right now so they process and send the passports the day after your appointment. I know what a horrible feeling it is so have my fingers crossed for you.
