To talk me down from the ceiling - dd passport expired and we fly on saturday

About to lose my mind - checked through passports this morning and realised that daughters passport expired in July of this year not July of next year as I thought. Can't use the premium service as its a child and no appointments available anyway. Have fast track appointment in Glasgow 0830 on Tuesday but we fly Saturday morning. Its the first time we've been abroad in 4 years. Can't believe we've been so stupid, she's been talking about this holiday non stop.

@Mochasforme thank you - appointment is at 0830 on Tuesday and flight is at midday on sat 😬just can't believe we didn't catch it until this morning, I guess we were focused on getting the first passports for the other two.

It's so easy to do but I think you'll be fine. I had an 0830 appointment too - get there a little early as there was a queue to get in when I went. They'll text you when the passport has been sent. Good luck!

Lougle · 06/08/2023 17:49

I think it should be fine. I used the standard passport application service on the evening of 26/07/23, they received the old passports on 28/07/23, and the new passports arrived on 04/08/23. You're using an in person service, so it should be much quicker.

My son got blind drunk and lost his passport
he flew in a week
we attended an appointment on the Tuesday at 11am in Newport
the passport came at 7.30 am the next day
try not to worry
it happens
this was in July xxx

If your son got blind drunk he is presumably not a child.
Adults can do a faster fast track than children.

Vitriolinsanity · 06/08/2023 17:54

Go and queue.

Also take her with you. I got the photo part wrong last year and had to get DS to get the train up to London for another to be taken.

This happened to me a few years ago, I went to Liverpool on the Monday to do the application and it came in the post on the Thursday. We flew on the Saturday. It was July too, so peak time.

Good luck OP!

pamplemoussemousse · 06/08/2023 18:01

To add it was a child's passport, not an adult!

NotMeNoNo · 06/08/2023 18:03

Make sure you take a bit of time to get a photo from one of those places that guarantees it will meet passport requirements. I spent ages having DS's photo rejected due to wearing a coloured T shirt Confused

Maxsaidno · 06/08/2023 18:05

OP to add to the messages of hope I was in the same situation 9 days ago. Had to hastily fly to Belfast as only office with appointments. V costly mistake but got last app on the Fri PM and DD’s passport arrived 8am Wed. Currently on holiday 😅 Good luck!

red78hot · 06/08/2023 18:08

I did the same a few years ago, booked a last minute holiday 2 weeks to go, checked passports straight after, partners had expired a few months before. Couldn't believe we didn't check, I'd just had a failed ivf round and the holiday was not planned due to the treatment.
We got him a last minute appointment in Liverpool the week before we flew, made a day of it as we'd never been before, the lady who did his appointment said that they get lots of people who've done similar and she said "there's one thing though! You'll never do it again!"
I think we had to go back a couple of hours later to collect the printed passport, the interview itself was about 15mins.

blackbeardsballsack · 06/08/2023 18:09

I got my DC's in the post 2 or 3 days after the fast track appointment a few weeks ago so there is hope

Proudmum17 · 06/08/2023 18:10

You'll be fine. I had this situation my appointment at Peterborough took 4 hours but I left with new passport

I think I commented on the last thread but I had an appointment at Glasgow on 14:30 on the Monday and DD's passport was here Wednesday 12:16 it was a 7 hour journey for me and one of the most stressful things that ever happened. good luck

tallsmallmum · 06/08/2023 18:11

7 hour each way

BatheInTheLight · 06/08/2023 18:16

Thank god you've discovered the problem with a good amount of time left until you go!

Gettinagoldtoof · 06/08/2023 18:22

I’ve done exactly this with a child’s passport. They just have such a short length, with a few kids there’s always one of them running out!

I had the same as you, noticed a week before we flew, appointment in London on Tuesday and flying out Saturday, passport delivered Friday. It worked out for us. Hope you get your lovely holiday.

marcopront · 06/08/2023 18:39

I didn't say you did say he was a child but as I did say adults have a faster fast track than children.

His experience as an adult is irrelevant to the OP who is getting a child passport.

blackforesthotchoc · 06/08/2023 19:12

Thanks all - the main worry is that she has been literally talking about this non stop for about 6 months and the look on her disappointed face if it doesn't arrive in time. @Vitriolinsanity we've had the photos done at max speilman so they're right, got four plysical copies plus the digital one, friend who is a teacher has signed two just in case one is mysteriously not right! We've also looked at flights on the Sunday and Monday, if it doesn't quite work then dh is going to fly out on one of those days with her. Just could do without expense or stress (entirely self inflicted!)

marcopront · 06/08/2023 19:17

It was a while ago but we had an appointment on Thursday for my DD and got her passport on Saturday.

JellyBellies · 07/08/2023 03:20

Be careful around alternate flights, if you don't fly the first leg, the airlines usually cancel the return as well. So you may need to book new outgoing and return flights so check with you airline before you do that.

Shurleyknot · 07/08/2023 04:53

I know this is not helpful at all but how the hell do people continuously book flights without checking passports first? Baffling. Absolutely baffling. I hope you get sorted but to be honest with all the 'talking for 6 months' about it surely at one point someone looked at the passports?

LiloP · 07/08/2023 05:41

NotAMug · 06/08/2023 14:16

My friend got her daughters by just turning up at the passport office. She had to stay in London overnight and they issued the following day. There was an error on the form (i had completed the part confirmation her identity) and they just called me to confirm it and that was it.

I hope you get it sorted. Obviously I get in this instance it was just a mistake of remembering the date of expiry but I think so many people are getting caught out with the changes since Brexit.l and it seems hit or miss as to whether the passport office sorts it for online applicants, in person seems more reliable.

I looked at my passport and it expires May 2026, however issue date was Sep 2015 so actually it runs out Sep 25. I am going away May 2025 so will need to renew before that as I will need 6 months left for this destination so I probably need to renew early 2025 to be on the safe side. I have seen quite a few posts on some cruise holiday FB groups I'm on where elderly people have been turned away as they have not realised that they can only have 10 yrs from date of issue.

It doesn’t run out then, this is incorrect.
if you are traveling to the EU, your passport will only be accepted 9 years and 6 months after date of issue no matter what the expiry. You can still travel to other countries (eg my husband traveled to outside of the EU with a passport issued more than 10 years ago)

How is it 'continuously'? This is the only time the OP has done it. You know there's more than one poster on Mumsnet?

Child passports last for a very short period. It's easy to think they are virtually brand new. Also people make mistakes and forget things. You must know that.

I'm a very very regular flier and have actually left my passport at home, forget to renew visas or ESTAs a couple of times. It just happens especially if you are busy. Sometimes the most important element just slips your mind. Never made a specific trip to do something only to realise you left the 'thing' at home (e.g gone to a restaurant to spend a voucher you've been given and left the voucher at home)?

I haven't ever forgotten when my passport expires though. I've written the date down so often in landing cards it's etched in my brain

DH managed to renew his UK passport in plenty of time but totally slipped his mind that he needed to transfer our NZ PR visa to it so we were almost prevented to return home! 😒

THIS! See also thread about ESTA. Spending ££££ on Disney and then a last minute panic as didn’t apply for ESTA.
