AIBU to think that Sims 4 is like HOMEWORK

So I cut my Sims teeth on Sims 1, 20 years+ ago, peak Sims play Sims 2 at like 18 or so. Dabbled a smidge in Sim 3 never really that fussed then real life, kids etc came along and I totally retired from the sport.

Now my youngest is 8 and we have a PS4 which has Sims 4 for free Grin

So, the odd evening I've dipped in and had a go. Fuck me. Its as challenging as real life. Its not escapism.

They have aspirations and wants along with their needs. They get sad if you don't fulfil their life goal of earning a million quid in a day, they get pissed off if you schedule too many actions in a row. Trying to get them on a sleep schedule is harder than it was for both my infants, and they just seem to piss themselves every day!

I've started creating sims with little to no real goals or interests, just so that the game play is less stressful for me, as I just want to switch off when I play, not have to babysit another family of kids I created.

Fuck me.

Take me back to listening to Pure Shores and smashing it at Sims 2 til the small hours on a pc in my folks house.

YABU to play sims 4, sims 2 is the best best best ever.

However it needs a bit of coaxing to get it set up on a modern PC. But after that, you're golden! (As long as you don't download hordes of conflicting mods anyway).

I thought sims 3 and 4 were supposed to be extremely boring with no drama or challenge compared to sims 1/2 though.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/07/2023 13:09

I don't have the hardware to play Sims 2 otherwise I'd be back on that for sure. It needs a proper pc doesn't it

S4 graphics are obviously way way better than S2.

But S2 had the best gameplay - I think. Even now I often think 'oh, I'll just do that' and then remember that it's an S2 thing.

e.g. University was way, way better in S2 then S4.

Caribun · 19/07/2023 13:11

Thank you! I downloaded it and then have just abandoned it, it was BORING and difficult at the same time. I don't want to actively parent toddlers on the computer when I have one at home 😂

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/07/2023 13:13

I loved all the expansions that came with S2, like pets and camping and stuff. I did say once my youngest is well into his teens I will buy what I need to get back to Sims 2 properly.

Honestly they are harder work than my actual family, with no reward.

You can play it on a laptop these days, but it won't work on a games console.

BertieBotts · 19/07/2023 13:15

I prefer the sims 2 graphics. You do need to default-replace all the dated horrible 2000s fashion clothes and hair and eyes to make them less pixelated, but once you've done that, the game looks great.

I find in sims 3 and 4 everything is so dark all the time because the lighting is totally weird.

😂 I went through a little phase of playing 3 and 4 a few years ago, as I peaked at 2 as a kid. I actually liked how "real" the people were, but I think that's largely because, as an adult, just going through the motions of building a gigantic house and then watching the sims walk around it felt a bit boring and pointless. I felt the need for something more to be going on.

I never felt that way about the Sims as a kid, though, so I still think Sims 2 is the best, I've just grown out of it.

I remember also thinking the town seemed oddly small in Sims 4 compared to Sims 3, I was surprised it had scaled back down.

evilharpy · 19/07/2023 13:18

I'm logged on during my lunch break and wish I hadn't read this. Now I want to down tools, get my home laptop out and find a way to install Sims 2. I had forgotten it ever existed but am now filled with a terrible nostalgic longing.

I also loved the first one. I was at college in the very early 2000s and only had 56k dial up at home, so the lovely IT tech in my college used to let me download loads of Sims content there and burned it all to CD for me to bring home! There was one particular thing I remember, a user-created shower cubicle that filled up all their meter bars. Cheaty but I used to use it when it was all getting a bit frantic!

HauntedCabinet · 19/07/2023 13:19

Definately you need a 'fill needs' cheat every now and again Grin

Otherwise there is never any time to actually get anything done.

Nuca · 19/07/2023 13:36

Definitely agree! Spent ages the other day building a perfect house, creating their dog etc then after 5 minutes of actual gameplay I stopped because I remembered how much hard work it is

Likeaburstcouch · 19/07/2023 13:40

I sometimes get a longing to play the Sims but am terrified to in case I can't stop and end up losing my IRL house and family.. if you still play it, how long do you spend on it and how old are your real kids?!

GeraltsBathtub · 19/07/2023 13:40

I still play sims 2 Grin it was the best one! I put it on my laptop using the same discs from back in the day but I’m pretty sure you can download it online for free now

TeddySunflowers · 19/07/2023 13:40

I couldn't get into Sims 4 and I think that it's pretty appalling that you would have to spend £1000 to get all of the expansion packs! Sims 2 was the best but its incompatible with my new laptop and I can't figure out how to fix it.

Weefreetiffany · 19/07/2023 13:47

I used to use rosebud to build elaborate houses… ended up an architect. If only it was as easy in real life 😂 but yeah a fun escapist dolls house for people probably too old to play with dolls? 4 sounds tedious though! I don’t have a pc because if I had access to civ, theme hospital, pharaoh and the sims I would never get anything done!

slowsundays · 19/07/2023 13:49

If anyone has a Mac, you can get The Sims 2 Super Collection with all the expansion packs on the App Store for about £25. The best ever.

Thank you for ensuring that all my current deadlines are about to get roundly ignored 😂

kfhurs · 19/07/2023 13:53

Love Sims4, but had a huge break between 2 and 4 so don't really remember 2 though I know it has a cult following. I love the expansion packs, I'd find 4 boring by itself.

Dotjones · 19/07/2023 13:55

I loved the original Sims, there was a money making hack whereby you could earn money easily by getting them into a relationship, killing off the partner and then repeating the process. The easiest way was just to box them into a room until they died and became a ghost, I had a character who rattled through about ten men this way and was rolling in cash.

I tried playing Sims 4 but it was too much faff for me to get into, the DLC felt very exploitative too. Maybe it's just that I'm not a student these days.

ChiPawPrint · 19/07/2023 13:56

Love sims 4, I'm constantly building new house designs. There is a lot going on though with their moods and dreams etc.

I heard that sims 5 is in the pipeline but not sure how long it will be until it's released.

FionnulaTheCooler · 19/07/2023 13:57

Was Sims 2 the one where your Sim could get abducted by aliens and come back pregnant, even if it was male? I remember playing that one. I also remember how much of a pain in the arse it was raising a Sim baby/toddler. Very addictive though. Sadly my old laptop stopped working but probably for the best.

WallaceinAnderland · 19/07/2023 14:00

Sims 2 was great but Sims 3 has so much to play. I never got into Sims 4 as you can't keep an eye on your whole household if they are off doing different things. You have to wait for each area to load. Love the Sims 3 pets and Supernatural. Love that you can have alien babies and ghost babies, etc. I still play Sims 3 most days. Also Civ4 but not Civ5

WallaceinAnderland · 19/07/2023 14:01

Oh and Sims3 World Adventures of course. Fab expansion pack.

MrsElsa · 19/07/2023 14:17

I'm a builder in Sims 4 and love it for that. The gameplay is meh but fun for random laughs sometimes!

This is so me! I love building more than actually playing.
