AIBU to think that Sims 4 is like HOMEWORK

So I cut my Sims teeth on Sims 1, 20 years+ ago, peak Sims play Sims 2 at like 18 or so. Dabbled a smidge in Sim 3 never really that fussed then real life, kids etc came along and I totally retired from the sport.

Now my youngest is 8 and we have a PS4 which has Sims 4 for free Grin

So, the odd evening I've dipped in and had a go. Fuck me. Its as challenging as real life. Its not escapism.

They have aspirations and wants along with their needs. They get sad if you don't fulfil their life goal of earning a million quid in a day, they get pissed off if you schedule too many actions in a row. Trying to get them on a sleep schedule is harder than it was for both my infants, and they just seem to piss themselves every day!

I've started creating sims with little to no real goals or interests, just so that the game play is less stressful for me, as I just want to switch off when I play, not have to babysit another family of kids I created.

Fuck me.

Take me back to listening to Pure Shores and smashing it at Sims 2 til the small hours on a pc in my folks house.

What's the Needs cheat?

I've stopped putting husbands in the game as it's ridiculous that I have to manage their wants and needs too. They need a setting where you have Main Character and a load of family NPCs.

Even in sims we have to put up with the mental load of others Grin

DaisyUpsy · 19/07/2023 20:02

I don't enjoy sims 4 as much as previous ones. I loved how you could customise the furniture in sims 3 and sims 4 you no longer have to put the trash out?

I do like a play of the old theme hospital now and then too.

LookingForFreeDoughnuts · 19/07/2023 20:08

Did anyone get into the other Sims games? Sim Tower was sort of like a cross between Sim City and the Sims, you could sort of spy on people's lives as you built the apartment tower but didn't control their actions. Or am I remembering it wron

I always think of Sim City when I take a flight somewhere. I was never any good at it but I loved the intricate miniature buildings.

Try the 100 Baby Challenge for a real test of your skills!

The consensus in the fandom is that Sims 3 was the best and 4 a big disappointment. I totally disgaree. I like 4 and 2, never could get into 3 at all.

@CottonPyjamas thank you I didn't realise you could do that!

I learned the hard way too

How do the matriarchs fund the household for the 100 baby challenge as they aren't able to leave the babies home.

I really liked Sims medieval. Also found Sims 4 too much like hard work. I really need chill games these days.

Several options:

  • Some of the career paths allow the sim to work from home every day. Off the top of my head there's Gardening and Fashion but I think there are a couple more.
  • Freelancing where she picks up writing or programming tasks when she has time.
  • Selling paintings, music compositions, or books.

I like the rags to riches challenge. You put your sim on a blank lot, maybe with a park bench. Then you use a cheat to take all their money off them.

You have to keep them alive (without cheating), slowly getting some money together ans building the house from their earnings.

JustAnotherUsey · 19/07/2023 21:01

I use a cheat to get started. The give satisfaction points. Then buy them all the things from the reward store like hardly hungry, steel bladder etc... So you can play with their needs not going down super fast. Makes it more enjoyable!

GlobetrottingPercy · 19/07/2023 21:07

Ah, totally agree! My main character’s dog ran away because it was so unhappy that I was neglecting it trying to fulfil her desire to become a high ranking policewoman. All that time I invested in her career and she couldn’t even find her dog in a neighbourhood of 4 houses, he just gave up and sloped back in a few days later with a little message that I had to take better care of him! It’s just so complex. Bring back the days when the only stress was Mortimer Goth politely knocking on the door when you didn’t want any visitors…

AbsoIutelyLovely · 19/07/2023 21:08

I used to make them piss themselves on purpose 😂😂😂😂

DinaFox · 19/07/2023 21:23

I stopped at Sims 2 and I love it. I tried the later versions but they just felt too realistic and lifelike for me. I like the cartoony element of Sims 2. I don't want the gameplay to feel too realistic as that would just keep reminding me that I need to do stuff in real life! My issue though is that I find it's a laptop killer-how do people stop it from overheating their laptops? And how do you save gameplay so you don't lose it if your laptop does die?

swanling · 19/07/2023 21:28

I gave up on S4 as soon as I discovered I had to consult a recipe book and then carefully plan a grocery shop with the correct ingredients if I wanted to feed them.

Why would I possibly want to plan grocery shopping in that much detail again and again and again in a game?

Guineapigwoes · 19/07/2023 21:35

Oh I’d totally forgotten about Mortimer!!

Wasn't he a rich widow in the 3rd one? Ready for the Caliente twins to get the claws into

bellamountain · 19/07/2023 21:40

I remember making my own family in the Sims 2. I was living at home at the time and remember my dad being really freaked out. His Sim had his exact mannerisms.

Zoologydragon · 19/07/2023 21:43

Rosebud

I cut my teeth on 1&2 but never got into any of the others....wish I could play the original again!! The hours I spent on it in my teens 😂

bibbingo · 19/07/2023 21:50

Oh my god the nostalgia from this thread! I was bloody addicted to Sims 2 as a teen. Never tried 3 or 4 but now I want to 😂

BertieBotts · 19/07/2023 22:21

If you want to back up your game in case of laptop meltage there are some good guides on the modthesims website.

Basically for sims 2 I just copy and paste the whole "the sims 2" folder and store it on a USB stick or something. Every few months you can delete the old backup and make a new one. (Don't let it overwrite, it corrupts the files).

My youngest are nearly 2 and nearly 5 and I can't really go on it in the day as they just want to play it. "Make them go to the swimming pool! Make them eat a pizza! Make them go to the TOILET!!!!!" So I play it in the evenings. I am quite good at sticking to my bedtime. Most of the time...

Valeriekat · 19/07/2023 22:50

I once had a character called Mrs Nice. One day I realised that I was neglecting my own house in order to make sure hers was super tidy.

Meerkatdog · 19/07/2023 22:57

Omg this has reminded me of my youth, LOVE Sims, never played Sims 4

Remeber the heart vibrating bed Grin

I do like that they give the options for the Sim to woohoo in the hot tub Grin

In sims 4, you can WooHoo in the hot tub, tent, cow shed and I think the waterfall.

riotlady · 20/07/2023 00:24

I much prefer 3 to 4. I don’t understand why they made it so in Sims 3 you could go wherever you like without loading screens, then in 4 it went backwards and all of a sudden you have to load it all again?
