If you scrape a car that blocked you in

Just that really. Your car doesn't have sensors, somebody has parked illegally in a car park and block you in making it very difficult to exit, and despite best efforts with lots of dry steering, you scrape the car trying to get out. What is reasonable to do next

Someone blocked me in a supermarket car park once - blocked completely. I had to go to work so I drove into them and pushed the car out the way - dent in the bumper

Private land, nothing they can do. Don't block people in 🤷‍♀️

fair enough. Glad your own car didn't get damaged by the arsehole.

PoshPineapple · 15/07/2023 18:02

"I’ll probably be shot for this but I’d drive off.

if they were legally parked and I’d scraped the car I would absolutely leave a note.

buf if you park like a dick and something happens as a result then that’s on you.

To flip it, if I was parked illegally and my car got scraped because I had blocked someone in I wouldn’t be expecting a note either."

This.

BalloonSlayer · 15/07/2023 18:07

Same happened to me, a car had parked quite badly next to me with the front of the car really sticking out and I caught it when leaving the space. I left a note with my details (gobsmacked that someone says no one ever does this) but they never contacted me. I suspect they might have thought the note was an advertising flyer and flung it away without looking at it, or maybe they didn't have any insurance or something.

wholivesondrurylane · 15/07/2023 17:58

the bloody cheek! 😂

If someone has parked for the weekend, you expect the blocked car to wait for 2 or 3 days?

I don't think I would dare, but I applaud the people who just get the arsehole car out of the way.

Well, yes. Unfortunately there's not much else you can do unless you're willing to be a dick. I very much doubt any of the posters driving off from accidents would have otherwise have been blocked in for days on end, either.

BungleandGeorge · 15/07/2023 18:11

Do people really think you’re not liable when in a supermarket car park? 😆

and there was no indication in the post that the car was parked illegally?

It doesn't matter that it was in a supermarket car park - you're still liable for any damage Hmm

BungleandGeorge · 15/07/2023 18:14

They did put ‘illegally’ parked not that it makes any difference to responsibility but were they illegally parked in a car park?

topnoddy · 15/07/2023 18:15

And this "survey" is going to appear where OP ?

LaurieFairyCake · 15/07/2023 18:22

If you hit a car on private land you are very unlikely to get prosecuted - that slim chance falls to zero if someone blocks you in Hmm

This is why I have a very old, shit car - some bloke drove into the back of me and wrote his car off and I did not pursue him for my dented bumper (felt very sorry for him)

crowsfeet57 · 15/07/2023 18:24

As someone who is looking out my window to see a neighbour's car blocked in by two vans, one of which blocked my drive earlier in the week and the driver refused to move until my giant breed dog strolled out of the front door, I would think it served them right and I'd drive off. (I'm not usually like that but have reached the end of my rope with people blocking my drive. )

By the way the dog is a big softie and had come out in the hope of nipping off to the field without being spotted.

DoThePropeller · 15/07/2023 18:26

How bad is the scrape? This would influence my actions.

Riapia · 15/07/2023 18:31

It is expected when you drive a couple of tonnes of car you do so with due care and attention,

Surely the same care and attention should be expected from the driver when parking the vehicle.

Soapyspuds · 15/07/2023 18:33

Specifically how have they blocked you in? Need a diagram.

Aqua22a · 15/07/2023 18:35

Why do some posters on here believe it's ok to cause criminal damage? They'd be the first to kick off if it happens to them.

MN beggars belief sometimes Hmm

OddsOff · 15/07/2023 18:46

A diagram is needed if I was truly blocked in if it wasn’t a matter of life and death I work have just stayed put and waited especially if the ticket was on the windscreen to show when the person was due back.

JennyWreny · 15/07/2023 18:50

This morning in Tesco car park I was chatting to some friends and a car hit another when parking. The driver then reversed and still missed the space and hit the car for a second time. She noticed that I was chatting to friends nearby and that we had seen her hit the other car. She put a note under the windscreen before she went in to do her shopping, but when she came out and noticed that me and my friends had gone she removed the note and drove off. She didn't see that I was sitting in my car. I found the driver and gave her all the details including photos/reg number. The driver has now contacted their insurance and the police.

Happened to me twice within a week a year or so ago. Scrapes while people were trying to manoeuvre in car parks - both drove off without leaving their details. Unfortunately for them my dash cam was switched on . . . . .

Why do people think it's ok to do this?

Where on earth have you got this idea that you're not liable for damage caused on private land?

And being blocked in doesn't reduce the risk of liability at all.

You've got significantly more chance of there being CCTV or ANPR cameras in a supermarket carpark. It's very, very risky to damage other cars, for any reason, and think you'll get away with it.

Did anyone see you? No.
Are there any cameras? No
Is your paint on their car? No

LobsterCrab · 15/07/2023 19:11

This happened to me recently and I left a note. To be fair, the other driver hadn't parked like a total arsehole - it's just that they had a big car and it's a tricky car park with small spaces and not enough room to manoeuvre.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 15/07/2023 19:14

Whatwaste · 14/07/2023 19:43

Literally nobody would do this.

I would

WaxhamSeals · 15/07/2023 19:26

You can be prosecuted for careless driving on a road or other public place. Supermarket car parks are public places.
The police can and do prosecute for careless driving and for failing to stop and failing to report an accident if you hit or scrape a parked car

You just about sum up all that is wrong with society.

Leave a note in capital letters saying 'You parked illegally and blocked me in, I have taken pictures of this. I accidentally scraped your car as a result. If you would like to discuss this then please ring me on xxxxx.

Bet they don't ring.

It's not illegal to park badly.
