If you scrape a car that blocked you in

Just that really. Your car doesn't have sensors, somebody has parked illegally in a car park and block you in making it very difficult to exit, and despite best efforts with lots of dry steering, you scrape the car trying to get out. What is reasonable to do next

A stationery vehicle does not cause a crash/scrape.

Dillydollydingdong · 15/07/2023 15:02

That happened to me. I scraped a badly parked car as I was trying to get out of a carpark. I left a note and notified my insurance company. My insurance premiums are now more than double. Even though no claim was actually made.

WonderingWanda · 15/07/2023 15:16

I wouldn't want the scrape on my car to be honest so I would've been ringing the Cark park company about having the offending car removed.

I’ll probably be shot for this but I’d drive off.

if they were legally parked and I’d scraped the car I would absolutely leave a note.

buf if you park like a dick and something happens as a result then that’s on you.

To flip it, if I was parked illegally and my car got scraped because I had blocked someone in I wouldn’t be expecting a note either.

I'd do exactly this. It's a risk you take that 9 times out of 10 is probably fine...

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/07/2023 14:46

The person whose car was scraped will take a picture, put it on Facebook and ask for witnesses, CCTV footage, doorbell footage etc.

If you're unlucky, someone else will put it on Facebook "If this is your car, I saw the car that caused this damage and I have the registration number".

This is how many mumsnetters live their lives thinking things will happen. It isn't really representative of how most people think, so most people would just drive off.

No such thing as a stationery vehicle

GetInTheBinThenGetInTheSea · 15/07/2023 16:31

This is your fault legally. The option to not make the manoeuvre was always available to you.

theGooHasGone · 15/07/2023 16:34

If they're parked illegally and blocked you in deliberately I'd just drive off.

Only if she fancied hanging around for an unknown amount of time until the arse that had blocked her in decided to return.

CC4712 · 15/07/2023 16:40

Years ago my dad was partially blocked in. He pushed the car up and down and bounced that part of their car out the way. I have no idea if you can do that with modern cars- but he got out without scraping the other car.

In this case- I would have had someone help guide you out of the space

GreenWheat · 15/07/2023 16:39

Only if she fancied hanging around for an unknown amount of time until the arse that had blocked her in decided to return.

That would be the preferred option to having a collision, yes.

FannyJoan · 15/07/2023 16:46

They blocked you in, which is an offence abd you did your best to get out. Nobody got hurt and nobody has time to wait around for inconsiderate (idiot) parkers to magically appear to unblock you.

Leave them to it and forget all about it OP.

Redburnett · 15/07/2023 16:47

Avoid writing about it on the internet.

Deathbyfluffy · 15/07/2023 16:49

Whatwaste · 14/07/2023 19:43

Literally nobody would do this.

That says more about your moral compass than anything else…

LimeCheesecake · 15/07/2023 16:52

So what did you do OP?!

wholivesondrurylane · 15/07/2023 16:55

If you can get away with it, run away.

Hopefully there won't be any numpty taking a photo of your car and plastering on social media. They'll need a photo of the moment you did scratch the car, otherwise it's not proof.

Frabbits · 15/07/2023 16:56

Whatwaste · 14/07/2023 19:43

Literally nobody would do this.

Decent people do. Arseholes don't.

Leo227 · 15/07/2023 16:59

if I didn't mind damaging my own car I think I'd purposefully drive into the knob who blocked me in.

wholivesondrurylane · 15/07/2023 17:00

Decent people park legally. Only arsehole park illegally blocking someone in.

GetYourHandsOffMyCake · 15/07/2023 17:00

Clymene · 14/07/2023 18:51

Nothing. Serves them right

Illegally parked, it serves them right

Createausername1970 · 15/07/2023 17:01

My mum drove off. The first thing we knew about it was a knock on the door from a policeman. Someone had seen her and made a note of her registration no.

It was a lot of hassle.

(We were shocked as our mum was as honest as the day was long, totally out of character, but this was the first of a few incidents that eventually turned out to be the starting of dementia).

AIBot · 15/07/2023 17:05

What’s the legal position? Presumably if you were forced to stay longer you might have incurred extra parking charges or even a fine for over staying.

Thosepeskyseagulls · 15/07/2023 17:06

Leave a note saying “you have parked like a twat”. In case anyone is watching you and so they think you’ve left your details.

Frabbits · 15/07/2023 17:06

wholivesondrurylane · 15/07/2023 17:00

Decent people park legally. Only arsehole park illegally blocking someone in.

Which is irrelevant. Op still made the choice to drive into the other car.

GetInTheBinThenGetInTheSea · 15/07/2023 16:40

That would be the preferred option to having a collision, yes.

It wouldn't be my preferred option! They could be gone for hours.
