To ask how to get through the night with a UTI

shaniahoo · 07/07/2023 22:23

Never had a UTI before, then around lunchtime today I started peeing more and more frequently until by dinnertime it had become like being constantly desperate for the toilet but peeing brings relief for about 30 seconds and then I'm desperate again. Then the last two times I've been it's started stinging when I go and continues to sting afterwards. 111 have advised me to go the walk in centre first thing in the morning so I will, but what the hell am I supposed to to do tonight??? I won't be able to sleep a wink! I've been sitting on the toilet for a while just letting drips out as they come and before that I was on the sofa with an ice pack between my legs. Is there ANYTHING I can do besides take paracetamol and sit up all night in extreme discomfort?

Can you get in touch with a 24 hour pharmacy. In Scotland if you are a female under 65 you are told to see a pharmacist, so they must be able to provide treatment.

Duckafuk · 07/07/2023 22:25

Firstly drink plenty, secondly I find ibuprofen better than paracetamol when I have a UTI.
Do you have any Bicarbonate of soda? If you do then have a large glass of water with a teaspoon of bicarb dissolved in it - this really helps.

merderforlife · 07/07/2023 22:26

Don't just sit on the toilet, that won't help and actually makes me feel worse.

Once you get to sleep it won't wake you up.

Paracetamol and lots of fluids

Lovetotravel123 · 07/07/2023 22:27

Get to a pharmacy and get Cistopurin

User17865 · 07/07/2023 22:27

Drink a load of water to dilute it so it’s not irritating your bladder as much. I’d be taking some codeine or an antihistamine or something as well and/or drinking some alcohol to knock yourself out. Otherwise I think you will be in for a miserable night I’m afraid.

annonymousse · 07/07/2023 22:27

I'm just getting over a uti. I had jaw ache from gritting my teeth when peeing. I drank loads of water (pints!) and took paracetamol and ibuprofen. It helped me and I hope it helps you. It's a miserable thing especially with the hot weather.

FrancisSeaton · 07/07/2023 22:27

You need to drink TONS
uncomplicated urine infections don't need antibiotics you will be advised to drink at least 300ml hourly go flush it out. Also you can take some ibuprofen for the crampiness

chezpopbang · 07/07/2023 22:28

Drink water and I mean loads of it. Do not pee until you feel like you are going to wet yourself. Warm bath. Pad in your pants if it makes you feel more secure when needing a wee but not going.

MsMoody · 07/07/2023 22:29

Hot water bottle between the legs! Not too hot obviously.

PixieLaLa · 07/07/2023 22:29

Instead of an ice pack try a hot water bottle and drinking lots of water

Gracewithoutend · 07/07/2023 22:30

Take paracetamol and drink as much as you can. I know that sounds the opposite of what you think you'd do, but it does help. Obviously, though, the more you drink, the more you're on the toilet so you might not get much sleep tonight.

Also, there are 2 different types of antibiotics they can prescribe. They kick in very quickly so if you haven't started to get relief within a few hours, ring them and get the other type. Maybe more difficult from a walk-in centre. But ask them about it whilst you're there so you know what the protocol is if that situations occurs.
Good luck. Honestly, though, the ABs work really fast so you'll be feeling a lot better by tomorrow afternoon.

SlidingHoors · 07/07/2023 22:31

If you can get one of those cystitis relief sachet drinks from the chemist to get you through, do! I find sitting in a warm bath (no soap or bubbles!) and drinking a pint or two of water and letting the pee out helps loads. Sounds gross, I know, but it’s the only thing that soothes it temporarily.

Get antibiotics tomorrow!

Didicat · 07/07/2023 22:31

I used to find drink 2l of cranberry or red grape juice helped, drinking quite fast to flush my bladder out.

Mummy2022FT · 07/07/2023 22:31

I feel like I'm an expert on this!

Go to bed and sleep with a sanitary towel in your underwear and then also lie on top of a normal 'bath' towel and just wee if you have to. (It won't go through to the mattress as the urine is only drops at a time obviously)

seems disgusting but desperate times desperate measures! Only way you'll get any sleep tonight

Babooska · 07/07/2023 22:32

I just got over a bout of this, its hell! You must try and sleep to try and pass the time until you get treatment, drink as much water as you can bear , take painkillers and put a rolled up towel between your legs as the pressure helps.

bonfirebash · 07/07/2023 22:32

Ibuprofen and loads of water
Pour water over your bits when you go, or bend forward and put your hands on the floor, stops it stinging

ithinkifeelaliveagain · 07/07/2023 22:34

Drink loads and loads of water and tea, the more you can actually do big wees the better it will be! I’ve had a few nights like this and it’s absolutely awful so
ypu have my sympathy

Papernotplastic · 07/07/2023 22:35

Drink lots of water. No caffeine or citrus. Dresses rather than jeans or shorts. Heat pads or a blanket on your back (round your kidneys).

Billynomates12 · 07/07/2023 22:36

Put a hot water bottle between your thighs…the heat will numb the horrible need to pee and the pain

happyclam · 07/07/2023 22:36

If all fails try a luke warm salty shallow bath.... no idea how it works but it helped me once

Hollyppp · 07/07/2023 22:37

I had an awful night with this about 6 years ago. I hadn’t gone to sleep by 3am so I got in a lukewarm bath and just sat there for hours til like 6am. It soothed the pain. Went to bed the next morning and slept loads (after drinking loads). It was pretty nightmare ish

Oinkypig · 07/07/2023 22:37

Ibuprofen as well as paracetamol ( I am going to sound like an absolute idiot but it took about 4 UTIs to think I should take some painkillers 🤦‍♀️ Just keep drinking constantly and hold off weeing as long as you can (not normally good advice but for this situation it will help get through the night) feel better soon 🤞

Ifmylifewasforrent · 07/07/2023 22:40

Oh gosh I feel for you this is exactly what mine used to be like every decent shag!
trimethoprim was
like magic …. I used to just sit in a and E and say I don’t care when you see me but please give me five mins of your time to write a prescription ( it was 2
mins from my house) and make sure
you check the loo when you call me

you won’t sleep at all if it’s the same as
mine…. Literally every 10
seconds and like a pressure of pushing a wee out and NOTHING coming out fucking soul destroying and the burn 🔥 gosh I feel for you

Greengreengrass231 · 07/07/2023 22:45

Honestly I feel so so bad for you. There is no worse discomfort. I’d be less bothered by my upcoming csection than a uti. Drink lots of water and I always got relief in the bath and it might make you sleepy too. Take care x
